Interesting timing that the HHSA agency in Redding that helps the less fortunate or mothers with EBT will be less available to the public as California will begin enforcing new federal guidelines that mandate CalFresh recipients must work 20 hours a week, or 80 hours a month, or risk a reduction

The Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) is the primary local department that processes and manages CalFresh (food stamps) and EBT will ask employees to do mandatory furloughs making them less available to the public especially with navigating new federal rules.

Starting next month, California will begin enforcing new federal guidelines that mandat that CalFresh recipients must work 20 hours a week, or 80 hours a month, or risk a reduction in food benefits.

Finding a job in 2026 can be highly competitive in Shasta County. Many job seekers are experiencing prolonged hiring processes up to months at a time due to the use of AI screening and intense applicant pools for certain roles while balancing high rent, increasing food costs and utilities.

Interesting timing to reduce services when so many Shasta County residents depend on social services to make it at towards the end of the month in this economy.

Redding City Council denied UC Davis from establishing a regional branch here. However wants to pay a religious private school $10 million for a medical physician school while in a deficit.

Shasta Scout:

Two representatives of UC Davis medical school, both of whom are currently working as doctors in Shasta, delivered a presentation on the possibility of establishing a regional branch in Redding as part of today’s county board meeting.

If established here, the regional branch would start with a small batch of students but could eventually grow to a class of 150 as part of a 9-year plan.

UC Davis plans to establish a branch somewhere in the North State, and presenters are hopeful it could happen in Shasta County.

This was a no vote item, sponsored by Supervisor Matt Plummer for informational purposes. He expressed impartiality about whether or not a UC Davis regional branch would be the best strategy to increase local healthcare providers to meet a critical need in the North State.

Crye expressed skepticism about UC Davis’ commitment to partnering with Shasta, given that the school isn’t local. He’s supporting giving $10 million in county funds to a private religious school, Simpson University, to start an osteopathic medical school instead.

Clint Curtis ROV staff using the Redding Rodeo parade as excuse for raising campaign donations at Patrick Jones gun shop. I wonder if is this a violation of campaign solicitation of funds from county employees?

A small craft advisory has been issued due to strong winds, with possible power outages and tree damage, be careful out there

Hazardous, strengthening winds to possible gale force are forecasted for Northwest California, including Eureka, starting Thursday, May 14, 2026, and peaking on Saturday. Coastal headlands and exposed ridges are expected to see peak gusts between 30–40 mph.

Residents should prepare for potential power outages, tree damage, and difficult driving conditions on coastal highways.

Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in these conditions.

The City of Redding didn't get Measure A passed so the major donation contributions are going for your cannabis tax instead to pad the Redding general fund.

Shasta Scout broke the story about who was backing Measure A, the controversial 1% sales tax that would have generated millions and low returns to city maintenance and large percentages into the city general fund for undisclosed city spending.

Other large donors in support of Measure A include The Redding Rancheria ($20,000), Sierra Pacific Industries 25,000) and Bryant Wellness Partners (aka Nug x Sundial Collective company) ($20,000) - an Alameda-based cannabis and alternative health business and Turtle Bay Holdings, Inc. gave $5,000, and Simpson University gave $2.500

In addition, fees assessed on the local cannabis industry for business license permits have in the past been used to cover a pay raise for Redding legal staffers as they took on supervising cannabis code enforcement division staff and the city general fund

Customers in Redding pay the 6% city tax plus the 15% state excise tax on purchases. These hikes were approved to help close a projected $5 million budget deficit in the city's general fund. Small shop owners have reduced profit margins for local retailers and cultivators, with some paying 50–90% of their revenue to taxes.addition to the tax, permit fees for operators are high, costing over $30,000 annually, making it difficult for legal, permitted businesses to compete

Redding City Council seems to be giving favoritism, aka crony capitalism or even possibly a violation of fair competition policies in Shasta County, knowing small cannabis shops might not be able to compete and give a unfair financial advantage to John Oram owner of Nug X Sundial Collective to corner the cannabis industry across the state, as the city is trying to balance the $5 million deficit city budget on a single business in Shasta County. The cannabis shops. The city is broke. This was the backup plan

Remember back during the height of covid 2020 before the vaccine. Vice Mayor Dr Dhanuka was an outspoken advocate for opening business. Redding California became the state's highest rate of covid infection spread in all of California. Yet Dr Dhanuka wants to build a medical school here?

He edited his post, deleting the tags of the most outspoken people in Shasta County that were against mask wearing and preventing the spread here, especially to high-risk patients.

Primum non nocere

From the Facebook post :

Please be aware that this “breeder” Mini Dapple Doxie Haven out of Redding ,Ca (they have blocked me so you can search them yourself), dumps dogs that are “mutts” , please be better, and people do your research please. When you buy a dog from someone who is breeding out of their house, this is what you are supporting. You can see in these photos she is showing how cute these two are on her instagram then in private messages calls them “mutts that aren’t part of her program”, she also happens to be located very close to where the dogs were dumped. If there’s one thing I can’t stomach, it’s abuse to helpless animals. So I encourage you to share, so no one supports this human.
