I built VisualSpool, a 3D printer filament tracker with realistically rendered filament spools
Hey r/SideProject. I'm a solo dev, and after six years of tracking my 3D printer filament collection in a spreadsheet, I finally built my dream filament tracker website.
I wanted an interface that is calming, uncluttered and one that showcases your beautiful spools of filament colors. The whole point is that it's visual. Every spool gets a real front-facing and side render of itself. You see the wound strands. You see specialty finishes (silk shimmer, matte grain, galaxy starfields, glitter flakes, glow-in-the-dark luminance, iridescent oil-slick shifts). You see your actual filament colors, not just a hex square next to a label. You'll recognize "that's my Bambu Galaxy green spool" without reading text.
Then there's a Shelves page that lays out your storage the way you actually have it (rooms with shelving units with shelves on each), and you drag spools between them. Spools have weight tracking with full event history, so you can see when a spool was used, how much filament you've burned through it, and where it lived.
Other stuff:
- Brand, material, variant, color filters across the whole collection
- Custom filaments for anything not in the catalog
- Bench zones for what's currently printing or drying
- Label QR codes for spools
- Works on mobile too
Free, no credit card, early access. I had a couple friends and family test it and now I'd love a few more people to find what's still rough.
To sign up without using your real email, just make one up. Anything like username@fake.com or whatever@test.com works fine. I'll delete all the obvious test accounts tomorrow, so use whatever you want.
Comment with what felt good, what felt clunky, what you wished it did. I'll be responding to your feedback here for the next few days.
Built with Blazor Server, EF Core, SQL Server, Azure if anyone's curious about the stack.
