Gifted book with underlined passage as romantic gift in the 1880s?

In Vol. 8, >!Hawkes!< gives Emma a book with an underlined passage. According to PBS (link below), in the Regency-era (1810s), books with passages marked or underlined were sometimes exchanged between courting couples.

So, was this still a recognizable romantic gesture in the 1880s? Thoughts, Lionesses?
