It's Only A Week Away!!!

It's Only A Week Away!!!

Y'all, Idk exactly why but I am so hyped for The Fair this year.

Might be because All American Rejects is playing on Opening Day. Might be because the whole concert lineup is solid.

Might be the new vendors. Pretty psyched the Funk N Waffles is gonna be posted up with their own music lineup.

Maybe it's just because the performing dogs show is back. Or that the circus is gonna be in the Expotition Center.

Maybe it's because the Post Standard is gonna run a piece about the rabbit we got at The Fair in 2018.

Or maybe it's just because 2026 has been a good year for me!!

Whatever the reason is, boy I cannot wait to spend 13 more days at The Great New York State Fair!!

It made me happy to realize you can just run and skip and be happy

Whenever you want, wherever you want, you can just skip and spin and act how you feel. Nothing will stop you.

It's great!

What's the story of why people burn bones as offerings?

I'm pretty sure I've heard it before, it's like a story of trickery or something?

I could just Google it I'm sure but the point of all this is to tell each other stories right?

Lathe Workholding Thoughts?

So I received a HAAS ST-25 lathe from another branch of my company. They've had it in storage for years so it was basically free to me.

It has a collet spindle nose with no collets. I've always run lathes with 3 jaw chucks, I really like the versatility of having a chuck. Especially being able to run larger stock.

Is there anything I'm going to miss out on by swapping?

I'm mostly just going to use it to support fabrication and machine building so I don't really need super high production out of it. I'll fill time with parts that make money but that's not my main objective.

I've also got to choose which brand of chuck to buy! Is there a ton of added value from buying a Kitagawa over a cheaper HAAS branded chuck? It's quite a price difference, I've only ever used Kitagawa before so Idk what the HAAS chucks are cheaping out on.

I figure to get me started I buy a set of hard jaws, a few sets of soft jaws, and a set of collet top jaws then build a library of collet pads as I go.

Kinda just wanted to put this out there for y'all's thoughts. I've never set up a machine shop before! Up until now I've just worked in one so this is an exciting step for me.

Thanks for your time!!

Thoughts on Intrinsic AI?

Good morning all!

I've been working on adding automation to my factory and my company's other factories. At Automate last week I was really impressed at what the CEO of Intrinsic had to say about bringing automation to companies like mine.

Their whole thing of making automation accessible to non-experts and making it flexible and versatile is exactly what we need. I'm the only person working on automation here and I can only be one place at a time. If I could set up my shop and our other shops with easy to use and easy to program robots it'd be huge.

My question for you, have any of you seen or used FlowState? It's hard to gauge a product based just on a trade show booth, of course it looks good there.

Thanks and enjoy your weekend!

How would you design a die to form this?

I built a small concept for a machine that'll form joints on pipe.

As you can see, it works. But what you can't see is that my die design is clumsy and inefficient.

It's just a rudimentary piece of plate I bump formed and welded flanges on. Totally works but it sucks. Part gets kinda stuck on it and you have to remove the whole thing to get a part out.

I've done loads of press brake work but never something like this.

So my question to y'all is, how would you do it??

Alternatively, what are some resources I can get into to learn about forming die design?

Edit To Add: My plan for the next iteration is to machine a big ole block with the same inside shape, split it in half. Close it on top of the part for forming, open it up to remove the part.

But boy that's not gonna be cheap and I'd like to not go down a road I have no business being on if there's a better way.

Do other Nihilists dance? Do other Nihilists fight?

I feel really alive when I dance. It's really engaging to move your whole body to music. It's also how I psyche myself up for the journey ahead and fight the demons left over from where I've been. I don't really have much in the way of philosophizing though.

Fighting made me feel alive forever. The closest I've ever come to death is being beaten by a bunch of people I couldn't hope to fight off. But man... That feeling of "I'm not going to die here. Not in this street. I'm getting up. I'm living." What a feeling. And it happened for no reason, I didn't even know those people and I never saw them again!

It was both the most and least meaningful thing to happen to me.

Y'all got things like that in your life?

Storing bags at Union Station in Chicago (Early Morning)

Hey all! If I could, I just want to confirm that I can store a bag at Union Station in Chicago.

I have to be out of my hotel in the morning before a conference and then my train doesn't leave until 9pm. I'm hoping to pop over to Union Station like 6am or so, drop my bag, do my conference stuff, enjoy the city for a bit, hop on the train home, Bob's your uncle.

Is there a "that's not how it works" shaped hole in my plan?

Thanks and have a wonderful night!

Y'all Ready To Get Mad?

This is how my colleagues lifted a lathe to ship it to me. It's nearly brand new.

The lifting instructions are on page 2 of the manual.

The disrespect and level of don't give a fuck that went into this lift is infuriating.

Convincing my boss a degree is not just a piece of paper. Advice?

Good morning all!

I'm in a spot and I could use some advice.

I have made a career of progressing through the shop by working hard. I've made it from laborer to last week getting promoted to Manufacturing Design Specialist. I would very much like to change that last word to Engineer.

I'm also getting to a point that I'd like to figure out if my designs are going to work using math rather than experience and experiment. Those are fun and fairly effective up until now but I'm getting into machine design now, they're not enough. I need to be better.

I think I will excel in such a program. There's a really good school in my city, Syracuse University.

I brought it up to my boss and his answer was: that's expensive, what do you want a piece of paper anyway?

Up until now my company has been really supportive of education, I've taken courses at OCC and I'm going to Automate for classes next week. So I'm kinda surprised at the response I got ya know?

One way or another I'm going, they pay or I pay doesn't matter.

But I'd like to pursue another education contract with this company. I always have to fight for everything so that's no big deal but if y'all could help me with ammo I have a better chance of winning the fight.

Questions!!

How has knowing the science of engineering benefitted your company where experience alone couldn't?

How much faster is it to have designs worked out on paper than experiment and iteration alone?

What am I missing out on that I don't know I'm missing out on?

Thank you for your time and happy Wednesday!

I'm so hyped to get into this text!

Wild to me that I'm at a point in my career that I need to start knowing these things.

I started out as a frickin laborer just 13 short years ago. Now I'm out here trying to design machines! There's always more to be learned!

To The Residents Of Franklin Square

How did you come to live here?

I've lived here for a few years now and I've been curious the whole time how other people got here. I don't think anyone grew up here because there's no kids here.

Like for me, this was the end game! I lived my whole life on the other side of the highway, on the Northside, dreaming of this place but I didn't actually ever think I would get here. Literally used to say to my wife, "One day we'll get out of Skyline and we'll live here" when we'd go to the game store.

So for me this is a dream come true but I wonder what led everyone else here??

Also this is a post to say thank you for not being mean to me or stealing my stuff while I've danced in the park like a fool these past few weeks. I used to be kind of afraid of my neighbors when I lived in Skyline. But I don't think I have to be afraid of y'all and that's pretty good. But I didn't want to lead with that.

It's not a failure if you learn!

Today I learned that, in my application, a 5/16" thread in a 1/2" shaft makes a pin breaking machine!!

Everything else held up well!

Thinking the next iteration will be a solid pin and made of 4140, it won't be as easy to make but it'll move the weakest spot somewhere else.

If that breaks I'll beef up from 1/2" to like 3/4" or something.

Dance Wherever You Want. Whenever You Want.

I spent the morning dancing and jumping around to music in the park. It was amazing. I usually do it in my kitchen but like I needed more space and grass feels good on your feet. You can only go so hard in an apartment kitchen ya know?

I'm really tired now and kinda sore. Especially my neck, I always give myself whiplash. Occupational hazard of being into metal right?

Uh what does this have to do with nihilism??

I'll tell you!!

I was a bit nervous!! Like... You really just gonna go act a fool in full view of everybody?? You know you weren't raised to act like that!!

It was time for a confidence confirming exercise!! You fuckin need that shit if you're gonna make the most of your life. Part of that is not needing any outside input and ignoring established norms. A nihilist needs a lot of inner support or you'll get real lonely and sad and shit, we can't have that shit. So I wanted to practice what I think, be who I want to be even if I was raised not to, break a little meaningless chain.

Also the album I was listening to was Nihilism by Neon Oni. Might be AI generated or something. Idk what's real anymore and I don't really care. That shit goes hard and is super danceable. Obviously the themes fit the philosophical bill, especially Satori Sedai.

Okay so this post was mostly about dancing in public I guess. Yea, we should all do that. It's really good exercise. Physically and mentally. You'll build yourself up in good ways!

And music is awesome!! Letting yourself be moved by sound is just the best right?? There's a really satisfying flow to the whole practice that really jives with being a person. So do!!

Enjoy your weekend boyos!!

Got a buddy with a Bridgeport, need to help him install it. Got a question about power.

This is the part I don't have experience with. He tells me he has 240V single phase 50 amp service in his garage.

This machine came out of our old shop that wired everything 480V three phase.

I've cut a lot of chips on this machine but I'll be honest I could use some advising on this part of the process. I've seen a ton of talk between guys who have done these home installs with phase converters and components. I'd like to get a better idea of what we need to do before I start advising him and lead him down the wrong path.

Thank you in advance for any advice or experience you can share. Even if you just have a link to a practical machinist thread bookmarked, that's where I'm headed next to poke around.

Give it to me straight fellas. Am I gonna make D1.1 cert on Monday?

I've spent the past few hours making half a dozen practice coupons. Definitely some improvement. Y'all already helped me with my wormhole problem!

What do I need to be doing differently? I have another half dozen coupons to practice with this morning.

I'm relearning after 20 years of not touching a welder, doing machining and CAD since then, so give me every critique, any glaring errors or little nitpicks you see!

Thank you and enjoy your weekend boys!

Edit: I'm all out of practice coupons so I'm off for the day. Just wanted to drop a quick thank you to everyone who commented and left tips! Y'all really made what was gonna be a lonely morning of pure practice time into some good learning time!!

Thanks boys, you're good people
