Freelance writer/editor here - happy to help founders turn technical or complex ideas into writing people actually want to read

I'm a freelance writer and editor based in the UK. My work has appeared in several major national and international arts and culture publications, and I edit a multi-author publication covering culture and ideas.

I don't come from a tech background, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise - but that's often the point. A lot of founders are too close to their own product or idea to see what's obvious to them and opaque to everyone else.

My work is translation: taking something dense or specialist and finding the clearest, most compelling way to say it to someone who isn't already in the room.

If you're a founder trying to explain what you've built - for a blog post, a pitch, an About page, a longer feature - and the writing keeps coming out either too jargon-heavy or too thin, that's the gap I work in.

Happy to chat if that's useful to anyone here. Please message me.

Sponsorship income for a small publication I edit - how would this be treated under UC self-employment rules?

I'm on UC with the LCWRA element, and separately I'm self-employed as a freelance writer/editor (already reporting self-employment income monthly). I haven't been able to make any money in a year due to the industry changing and the worsening of my illness.

I have begun a small online publication as part of that self-employment - no separate legal entity, just me as sole trader. It currently runs on a handful of unpaid contributions from writers, and I'm exploring approaching a company or individual for sponsorship, with the money intended to go towards paying contributors rather than as income for myself.

A few things I'm trying to understand before I approach anyone:

  • Would sponsorship money paid into my own account (since there's no separate entity) just get treated as self-employment earnings regardless of what it's earmarked for? Again, it would be to pay contributors to the publication, not for me
  • Does it make any difference if the sponsor pays a contributor directly, rather than the money passing through me at all?
  • Has anyone actually navigated something similar - sponsorship, grants, or similar "restricted" income for a self-employed creative/media project - and can say how your work coach or the system actually treated it in practice?

I feel very demotivated because I haven't been able to get answers so far and my disability is such that full time PAYE work has always caused massive relapses during which times I've been hospitalised - maybe I should just pack it in entirely.

Very grateful for any advice!

36F - is my idea for the future a completely unrealistic (or 'delulu') one?

Hi everyone,

I am 36, female, looking for a bit of a reality check on the current UK job and freelance market.

With traditional freelance writing and publishing shifting so drastically due to AI and squeezed budgets, I'm curious what sustainable business models actually look like for independent specialists right now, and would be grateful for any insights.

For context, my background is in high-end research, editing and long-form writing, focusing on arts and humanities. I have an academic background up to postgraduate level (MA rather than PhD or postdoc). I cannot afford to retrain.

If you are self-employed or freelancing in a knowledge-based/editorial field in the UK right now:

  • Are one-off commissions completely dying out in favour of retainers, advisory roles, or fractional work?
  • How do you package your services so you aren't stuck competing on low commodity rates?
  • What pivots or alternative structures are you seeing actually work?

Would love to hear any insights, trends, or reality checks - I am cut off from the world, with caregiving for elderly relatives - please advise.

37F with an idea for freelance work in the UK - what would you do in my situation?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a realistic perspective from other UK-based independents on how to structure a sustainable business or navigate a career pivot in the current market.

I’m feeling stuck on how to position myself, and honestly, traditional freelance writing/publishing is shifting so drastically that I need to look seriously at what else I could offer using my core skillset.

Here is my background and qualifications:

  • Education: MA with Distinction in Ancient History from a Russell Group university, including specialised study periods abroad. (Note: I cannot afford to retrain or take on further study, as I am not eligible for funding).
  • Writing & Editorial Background: UK-based specialist writer, editor, and researcher focusing on culture, history, the arts, and research-led communication. My work has appeared in various leading broadsheets, regional arts magazines, and cultural review journals but now that has completely dried up.
  • Current Offerings: Research-led writing, structural and developmental editing, and cultural project content for galleries, museums, publications, and independent authors.

With the landscape changing rapidly due to AI and squeezed client budgets, I'm trying to figure out what a viable path looks like. I want to expand my horizons beyond standard article pitching.

  • What else could I do? Given my background in rigorous research, narrative synthesis, and high-level humanities/arts communication, what adjacent industries or commercial roles actively hire for these skills?
  • Pivoting to Services: Are there alternative B2B services or high-value packages (beyond standard journalism/copywriting) where a heavy research and editing background commands decent rates in the UK?
  • For those of you who transitioned out of traditional writing/arts media into consulting, advisory, or corporate/institutional roles, how did you market your transferable skills?

Any advice, reality checks, or outside-the-box suggestions for alternative revenue streams would be hugely appreciated.

What career models or self-employment pivots are actually working for writers and researchers in the UK right now?

I have a stalker who screenshotted posts from my manic episode. Devastated.

Hey everyone. I'm just feeling completely overwhelmed and could use some perspective from people who understand how exhausting a bipolar diagnosis and past episodes can be, especially when dealing with outside stressors.

Lately, I’ve been dealing with an anonymous person (or people) online who are actively trying to dig up my past, specifically things from a rough period/manic episode a few years ago, and using it to send harassing messages, contact form spam, and personal jabs to intimidate me.

It feels like a nightmare trying to keep my nervous system calm and stay stable when someone is actively weaponizing past health episodes and old mistakes against me.

Every time I try to ignore it, the anxiety spikes through the roof, making me feel like I'm under a microscope.

How do you guys handle it when people from the outside world or trolls try to drag you back into your worst moments? How do you protect your peace and stop the paranoia from taking over? Any advice or grounding techniques would be really appreciated.

On LWCRA and scared of the future

I am on LWCRA and PIP (lower rate) for bipolar disorder. It is a devastating illness that runs in my family

I wondered if anyone knew how easy it is to transition from being on LWCRA and PIP into long term gainful employment, please

Previously, about five years ago, I managed to get an office job but I was only able to hold it for four months and then failed my probation as I’d become unwell again

I just feel really hopeless now. I do a bit of freelance work from home but I’m horribly isolated and more and more depressed

I’m scared to ask the job centre for help as I’m also sofa surfing and scared of being penniless again

I’m also really triggered by thoughts that everyone hates me for being on LWCRA and that future governments will get rid of benefits altogether.

Any advice very welcome
