Best Tolkien quotes to confuse everyone in a group chat with

For example, when someone angers you, you quote Feanor:

‘Get thee gone from my gate, thou jail-crow of Mandos!’ (Chapter 9: Of the Flight of the Noldor, Quenta Silmarillion)

Or Gandalf’s ‘good morning‘ quote from the Hobbit Chapter 1: An Unexpected Party?

Can be from any Tolkien work (LotR, Hobbit, Silmarillion, etc).

Here are my notes on the Elves from the first 3 chapters - any mistakes?

So I’ve read the first 3 chapters of the Silmarillion and here are my notes on the elves (I am also listening to the Prancing Pony podcast). Any mistakes/improvements I can make? (Sorry for the lazy post)

Ingwefinwe and elwe went to aman as ambassadors

The Avari stayed behind and didn’t go to Aman, the Eldar set out for Aman

Eldar subgroups:

Ingwe is king of the Vanyar (fair elves) - who go to valinor and never come back - affiliated with Manwe and Varda

Finwe is the king of the Noldor (deep elves) - all go to valinor and some of them come back - affiliated with Aule

Elwe and olwe are kings of the Teleri (sea elves) - affiliated with 2 maiar  Ossë and Uinen

Umanyar - elves that said they would go but never made it

Two categories every elf fits into:

Caliquendi - elves of the light - made in to Aman in the days of the trees (all Vanyar and Noldor and some of the Teleri - HIGH ELVES). This includes the ambassadors (even if they went to rule Moraquendi clans)

Moraquendi - elves of the darkness - didn’t make it to Aman in the days of the trees

Teleri subgroups:

Those that stayed behind in Beleriand - SINDAR / GREY ELVES

Those that left the march before the Misty Mountains - NANDOR / SILVAN ELVES / WOOD ELVES

Some of the NANDOR who made it to Beleriand later become LAIQUENDI / GREEN ELVES OF OSSIRIAND

Best tracks from The Hobbit trilogy?

I’m a huge fan of Howard Shore’s soundtrack to the Lord of the Rings trilogy and am looking to get into his soundtrack of the Hobbit trilogy. Can anyone give me some highlights? (I’ve already listened to the credits songs [Billy Boyd, Ed Sheeran etc] and An Unexpected Party).

Thanks!

Can I read Stiff Upper Lip Jeeves after The Code of the Woosters?

Apparently Stiff Upper Lip takes place at Totleigh Towers as well as has many of the same character, so it acts like a sequel even though there are many other books between them. Is it advisable to read Stiff Upper Lip directly after Code, and will I be missing out on any information that I would have gotten reading the books in publication order?

Which books come in Nathan Burton’s colourful covers?

Can somebody please list every Wodehouse book available in the Nathan Burton penguin covers? (eg. the monocle for Something Fresh, the banjo for Thank You, Jeeves, etc). They are my favourite covers, and I would love to know which ones have them. Thanks!

Best ways to read the Silmarillion

So I’m about to start the Silmarillion but I know how difficult it is to read and was wondering if anyone had any strategies?

For example, is it better to read it or listen to the audiobook? If audiobook, should I listen to Andy Serkis or somebody else? Should I take notes on things I’m likely to forget while reading/listening (eg the roles of the Valar in the Valaquenta )? Are there any good YouTube/podcast series that recap each of the chapters (if you can call them chapters)?

Also, are some parts that are easier than others? Like is the Akallabeth easier than the main body?

Any help would be much appreciated to get as much as possible out of this book!

Questions on Glorfindel’s prophecy

Hi all. I have a few questions on Glorfindel’s prophecy on the Witch-King.

  1. How does he know? Is it just that he is more powerful having been sent back to Middle-earth after his death in the FA?

  2. The prophecy doesn’t mean much. I mean, the Witch King can still be slain by dwarves, Maiar, hobbits and women (see 3 and 4), and most importantly elves, one of the most powerful races on Middle-earth.

  3. What does ‘Man’ mean exactly? Because isn’t Eowyn a female of the race of ’Men’? Is ‘man’ a gender, a race, or both?

  4. I know that Merry technically doesn’t kill the Witch King, but Eowyn couldn’t have done it without him. Are hobbits not just an offshoot of Men? Don’t they share the gift of men?

‘Stories’ in the appendices

Recently finished RotK and got to the appendices. However… I don’t really care about family trees, translation, charts, etc. What I do care about is stories. I’ve heard that we learn about what happens to the three hobbits, Legolas and Gimli, Aragorn and Arwen. So could someone please tell me where to find these and any other actual stories? Page numbers would also be appreciated. Thanks

What do we know about the Blue Wizards?

I know this is something Tolkien left vague, but we hardly know anything. All I know is that:

  1. They went east (to Rhûn I believe)

  2. Their names were Allatar and Pallando

  3. They were Istari sent by the Valar to guide the free peoples to defeat Sauron, along with Gandalf, Radagast, and Saruman.

And that’s it! Can anyone tell me anything else about them? Thanks.

Spoilers in Curtain (Poirot’s Last Case)?

Simple question: I heard there were spoilers for other Poirot novels in ‘Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case’. I know it takes place at Styles (I have read Mysterious Affair at Styles), and that’s about it. If there are spoilers, could someone please tell me for which books? Thanks. Also obviously don’t spoil Curtain

Why don’t Will and Lyra use the Lodestone Resonator?

At the end of TAS, Will and Lyra have no choice but to abandon each other and their love, and go back to their separate worlds. But… surely they can use the Lodestone resonator that Tialys and Salmakia used to communicate with Lord Roke?

I can think of two possible explanations. The more likely one is that it simply didn't cross their minds. Which Is fair enough. The second is that Mabye the lodestone resonator can only be used by the Gallivespians. Anyone know any other answers?

If Tolkien wrote a sequel to LOTR, what would you want it to be about?

Not sure if this belongs in r/tolkienfans but I’m posting it here to be safe.

You may be aware that Tolkien started a sequel to the Lord of the Rings, but it was eventually scrapped (probably for the better). However, if it wasn‘t scrapped, what would you want it to be about and why?

For me, I’d love something about the two Blue Wizards - we hardly know anything about them. Maybe also something about Rhûn? The further adventures of Merry and Pippin? The Ents searching for the Entwives?

What are the real names of the Hobbits?

Recently, I read somewhere that the names of the Hobbits aren’t actually Frodo, Samwise, Peregrin, and Meriadoc. To be honest, this kinda made me sad, but I suppose it makes sense to translate the hobbits real names to be more common sounding (although, in my mind the only common sounding name of the hobbits is Sam) to match the homeliness of the Shire.

But what actually were their original names? What were the real names of Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry? Do we know? What about Bilbo and Fatty Bolger? The Sackville-Bagginses? What about non-hobbits, such as Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn and Thorin? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

How did Gandalf get from the bottom of Moria to the top of Zirak-zigil?

So in The Two Towers, Gandalf obviously returns to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli as Gandalf the White. And, while I understand how he died and got sent back to Middle-Earth, what I don’t understand is how he even got to the peak of Zirak-zigil in the first place.

I don’t have LOTR handy on me right now, so I’m not sure, but I believe Gandalf makes quite a thing about how far he fell in Moria. So did he just get chased by the balrog up a secret staircase and end up at the top of a mountain? I just don’t understand.

Also, this is my first post, not just in the subreddit but on Reddit full stop. I consider myself an amateur Tolkien fan but if I’m doing anything wrong (Or have overlooked something obvious when asking my question, which is probably whats happened!) please let me know. Thanks for reading!
