What are the best forms of cross-training during marathon training?

Sometimes I like to take a break from running if my joints need some rest. One thing I’ve noticed though is that I can’t seem to get my heart rate into the same zones compared to running.

On the elliptical I’m usually only around 108 bpm at like 75rpm and on the indoor bike I’m sometimes even lower around 98 bpm. Incline walking is the only thing that gets my HR somewhat closer, but I have to do like 15% incline at 3 mph just to get around 120 bpm. Swimming is great but I don't have access to a pool at like 5am to 6am.

Whenever I try to push more to get my HR up, my muscles fatigue faster, my effort is really high but HR low, which is the opposite of when I run.

Anyone have any tips?

How to balance strength training + speed work while still training with my wife for a marathon

My wife and I signed up for the Marine Corps Marathon, we will run together and her zone 2 / zone 3 is just about my recovery pace.

I would like switch my focus to strength training until I want to train for a max effort marathon again. I would like to focus more on speed or shorter distances as I noticed my predicted race times for Garmin all go down when I do more speed work vs marathon blocks. I just ran a 22:48 5K but my last marathon time 3 weeks ago was 5:03, so there's definitely a gap to fill.

Since I have different goals than my wife, I'd like to primarily do that but then maybe still run long runs with my wife? The goal is to be able to maintain my endurance level / fitness level but still prioritize strength training without injury (Olympic weightlifting).

I'm thinking we can still do all the training together for the most part but maybe sometimes I just bike besides her if I already did my workout for the day, or maybe even have her cross train somedays to help prevent injury as a newbie.

Or maybe I could follow her plan but convert it to some form of cross training like swimming or biking so it's not too much on my joints

I'm not exactly sure how much training is needed for me as well to be able to complete the marathon without injury, given that it will be very slow I imagine it would take less but I'm not sure?

2 Weeks post marathon, just did a 5k, how can I get faster at both?

I ran my first full marathon in March and finished in 5:31. I definitely went out too hard at the beginning, even though my Garmin had predicted a 4:20 finish.

I ran another marathon on May 2nd, but this time I paced completely by feel and heart rate, with only HR displayed on my watch. I finished in 5:03 and, surprisingly, I wasn’t completely destroyed afterward. That felt like a huge improvement in both pacing and endurance.

After that, I signed up for a 5K because I wanted to see what kind of speed I actually had. Garmin predicted a 23:30, but I ended up running 22:48.

Since then, all of my prediction times have continued trending downward. My current Garmin marathon prediction is now 3:59, so I’m starting to feel like sub-4 is becoming a realistic long-term goal. Right now, I’m mainly trying to figure out fueling and hydration.

I used Honey Stinger gels during my marathons, but they upset my stomach. I recently switched to , so I’m hoping that works better. Around mile 20 is when my legs really start to fall apart, and I suspect part of that is from underfueling. I also get really thirsty late in the race, but at the same time I stop wanting to drink anything, which is something else I need to work on during training.

After I didn't do as well as I would have liked on my most recent marathon in March, with a time of 5:31, I signed up for another one about 6 weeks later.

This time I only had my heartrate displayed and turned auto splits off, I felt really good though it did get tough mile 20 to 25.

My Garmin predicted a 4:08 after all the training I've done, maybe it's possible as in my 5K fitness threshold tests, I calculated my Zone as 85% of the average HR during the test which was 175bpm. I probably could have fueled more too, l had 1 gel, 3 energy chews, 2 energy waffles.

I finished right at 5:00, I feel like I still left some in the tank though but it felt very difficult to push at mile 20. I will take this as a win though.

Could anyone recommend a good training peaks plan? I'll start training long distance again in the fall

Hey guys, don't know much about coding but I was able to write some pretty cool scripts via Codex Chatgpt

I would like to be able to study on language learning websites like Memrise and Lingodeer, and then easily be able to make flashcards for Anki with the original audio from the sites

Does anyone know if this is possible or the best way to do this? I guess it would have to be a browser extension or something

I have a spreadsheet of about 400 sentences I would like to learn. Sometimes I need hints just like Memrise or Lingodeer have so I came up with a solution of having a field that is an answer box.

I would like to input a sentence like:

지금 무슨 책을 읽고 있어?

And get an output like this:

A) 무슨 B) 책을 C) 읽고 있어? D) 지금

So far I've been doing this one by one using Gemini but it takes forever, and the AI extensions on Google sheets don't work, they only give one letter or hallucinate

Does anyone have any solutions?
