Closer look at The Thing’s skin
Wanted to highlight some cool artwork/interviews about The Thing! Always loved whenever Marvel artists would give a glimpse into Ben Grimm’s skin/anatomy:
. A panel from Fantastic Four issue #395, where we see the scar on Thing’s face after it was slashed by Wolverine. Underneath his orange hard shell you can see the softer orange fleshy skin.
. Artwork from The Art of John Byrne, plus a panel from Ultimate Fantastic Four issue #7, which both show us The Thing’s skull.
. Thing pages from the Marvel Anatomy book illustrated excellently by Jonah Lobe. So much attention to detail here about how the plates on his skin move around and function with his transformed body.
. The Jack Kirby Collector #85, where quotes from Kirby and multiple artists share details behind many of Kirby’s work. Here it’s shared how he originally didn’t envision The Thing to have rock skin, but for his skin to resemble an armored dinosaur or boney plated reptilian hide.
. A Jack Kirby The Thing sketch dated 1962, which shows him in his more reptilian scaly form. This was found in the CBR 2010 article Comic Book Legends Revealed. Lower part of the article talks about The Thing’s skin and breaks down how each inker interpreted Kirby’s drawings differently.
. Early form reptilian Thing drawn by Arthur Adams.
. Cover from Fantastic Four issue #18, one of the first times The Thing’s skin started to look more like bricks/rocks. However even with this shift, there were still comics that would talk about him with other descriptors.
. In Strange Tales issue #132, Johnny once jokingly called Ben a walking clump of peach pits lol. So even though nowadays they’ll just go with the common “rocky/rock-like” descriptor for his skin, the original intent was to leave the descriptors more vague or varied.
. Cover from Ultimate Fantastic Four issue #4, with a page from Ultimate Power issue #9. Here Ben describes his skin as a turtle shell.
. Last two covers are by Nick Bradshaw. He draws The Thing’s skin in way where some of the orange plates have fallen/shed off.
Ultimate Thing vs Doombot and Hulk (Ultimate Power Issue #9)
Ultimate Fantastic Four
. Comic pages from Ultimate Power Issues 1, 8 & 9
. Cover Artwork by Stuart Immonen, Ed McGuinness, and Adam Kubert.
Spider-Man vs Hulk (The Amazing Spider-Man 1963, issue #14)
New Promo poster for Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Hulk vs Thing (Fantastic Four Issues 111-112)
This showdown between Hulk and Thing is just spectacular, probably one of my favorite fights between the two monsters.
John Buscema draws excellent action in this issue, the way Hulk and Thing use objects in the surrounding environment always makes these kind of fights way more inventive and fun.
Last slide Pin-Up art is from Incredible Hulk Annual #19
The Thing rampages through New York (Fantastic Four Issue #111)
Love this story just for the pure spectacle of it all, great action work drawn by John Buscema!
Also, it’s interesting to see the civilians of the Marvel universe already growing sick of superheroes by this time.
(Note: this isn’t the full comic, just the highlights)
FF & The Avengers vs The Hulk (Fantastic Four Issue 26)
Part 2 of The Hulk vs Thing fight from issue 25, now with the Avengers having to step in.
Even though it’s a 60s comic, I really love all the energy and excitement that Kirby draws within each panel. His posing of characters and action makes the comic feel so lively.
The X-Men vs Dr.Doom (Uncanny X-Men # 145 & 147)
I’ve been re-reading classic Dr. Doom stories and saw this really cool X-Men vs Doom story arc. Within the story Storm tries to talk with Doom before things (obviously) go wrong. This isn’t the whole story arc, but just some of the highlights.
Also love on the last page that Doom is visibly shaken by Wolverine’s claws lol
The Hulk vs The Thing! (Fantastic Four Issue 25)
Cover Page, pg. 1, and pg.2 for the beginning of the comic, overall some absolutely great action sequences drawn by Kirby.
Also funny tidbit, Bruce is called “Bob” here. It was an early mistake from Stan Lee, but eventually his full name was retconned into “Robert Bruce Banner” so that this inconsistency could make sense lol
The FF vs Doom and his Doombots (Fantastic Four issues 350 & 352)
Pretty notable story where Doom claims how many times he’s had various Doombots take his place, plus there’s a really awesome sequence of Reed and Doom having a “time jump” battle throughout the environment.
Also wanted to show some Thing vs Doom art, the cover art from the 19th slide is from One World Under Doom #8, and the last slide art done by Keith Pollard
Sue,Johnny, Thing and the Wakandans vs Doombots (DOOMWAR, 2010)
Found this event story “DOOMWAR”, where Doom is trying to invade Wakanda. There’s some really cool action with the 4 and the Wakandans battling against beastly Hulk-styled Doombots, with Reed in the command center laying out plans.
Panels from above are from DOOMWAR, issue #4
The Thing vs Dr. Doom
Wanted to share some of my favorite Thing vs Doom artwork/moments from the comics. I love whenever we get to see Ben just let loose on Doom, it's a cool way to highlight that Doom doesn't just hate/lose to Reed Richards. He sees each of the 4 as nuisances for constantly beating him, with Ben being the main physical threat.
Comic covers/panels/pages shown here are from:
• Fantastic Four issues 40, 60, and 552
• Stan Lee meets Dr.Doom One-Shot
• Infamous Iron Man issue #2 cover
• Thing vs Doom Art by Steve Fastner and Rich Larson
• Marvel Universe series 2 1991 trading cards.
Hulk vs Hulkbuster: VFX breakdown
A while ago I shared some behind the scenes footage of Hulk vs Hulkbuster, the video in this post is a quick vfx/CGI breakdown of some shots from the fight sequence.
The Previs and VFX team deserves a ton of praise for their work on these Marvel films, and overall I just find this stuff really cool lol
Artwork of Early Form/Scaly Thing by Marvel Artists
One thing that I love about comics is whenever artists pay homage to earlier concepts. Wanted to show some artwork from various artists who have drawn The Thing with his earlier dinosaur skin form.
The First two slides shows comic artist Arthur Adam’s depiction of The Thing with this early design, with slide three being a page excerpt from the book titled Jack Kirby Collector #85 that details Kirby’s original intention for The Thing’s design.
The following two slides showcase an example of Jack Kirbys sketch of his early Thing design next to his other Marvel character The Devil Dinosaur. The artwork from the rest of the slides belong to Todd Nauck, Giorgio Comolo, John Byrne, and Michael Golden respectively.
Just thought this would be cool to share!
Avengers Age of Ultron Behind the Scenes
Wanted to share this really cool “Making of” look from AOU! I’ve always been fascinated with how these movies are made, especially with how much VFX/CGI and stunt work is incorporated into the final films.
Age of Ultron VFX Breakdown
Found this really cool CGI/VFX breakdown for AOU. Always love seeing the work put into these Avengers projects, although this one was surprisingly hard to find compared to the VFX breakdowns of other Avengers films.
Hulk vs Hulkbuster Behind the Scenes
Found some awesome behind the scenes footage of the Hulk vs Hulkbuster fight from Age of Ultron. Really great work put into one of the best action sequences in the MCU
Hey there! I posted this question over at the Fantastic Four subreddit, but wanted to get more thoughts/opinions on the topic over here in the actual Marvel Studios sub lol:
Let me start by saying that I think Ben Grimm already has a fantastic design in First Steps. His look in the film perfectly captures the 60s/Byrne/classic era of the FF comics that movie was emulating.
With that said, do you think Thing could use a slight size and height increase? I say this because while Thing isn't Hulk size, he's still generally depicted as being way larger than the average person (unless the comic is specifically emulating the classic 60s era). I put various pics of Hulk and Thing together/along with other heroes to compare them.
This isn't to say that First Steps got his size or height wrong, far from it. Just wanted to get some general opinions on the topic.
