Initial Appt w/ New Doctor
My mom (73F) was diagnosed by a neurologist and her primary care doctor with Alzheimer’s related dementia. She doesn’t believe she has dementia, so she switched doctors to someone new. My dad should have never allowed that, but here we are. It would put my mom in a rage if she knew we were talking to her doctor about dementia.
My dad (73M) now sees that she needs treatment and medicine and is willing to go through the steps to help her. He called my mom’s new doctor asked for an appointment to discuss next steps for my mom, but doctor says my mom is only person that can make appointments.
In an ideal world, we want to tell my mom’s doctor about the dementia, then we bring my mom in for an appointment and the doctor makes her own assessment of my mom. Doctor provides a treatment plan to my dad, and we can get both of them more help. Again if we were to tell my mom that something is wrong with her and it is dementia related, there is an over the top angry response. She’ll get verbally abusive and even start throwing things at us. However, we think if the doctor brought it up, she might handle it better. Maybe.
Any advice?
