(Mental Illness Trope) Characters whose questionable decisions have devastating consequences for their sanity.

  1. Paul Radin, the protagonist of "One More Pallbearer" from the original Twilight Zone. Nursing a grudge against three people from his younger days, he sets up an elaborate ruse to try and dupe them into thinking nuclear war has erupted so he can get the vindication he thinks he deserves. TLDR: they see right through it and it breaks him so bad he becomes almost catatonic.
  2. Norma Desmond, the main female character in "Sunset Boulevard". In hopes of rejuvenating her faded career she hires a fugitive copywriter to work on editing her script for a costume epic she's sure will launch her cinematic comeback. If you've seen the original 1950 movie or Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1991 Broadway musical adaptation, you can probably remember how that turned out.

Hint #1: The movie I'm thinking of was adapted from a six-part late 1950s BBC TV mini-series.

Hint #2: One of the supporting cast members has since gone on to a recurring role in "Game of Thrones".

Hint #3: The movie in question will be celebrating the 60-year anniversary of its UK release next November.
