The Ithaca Fighting Game Community

I've always found fighting game locals to be a great way to make new friends and have some fun learning and getting better at one of the best video game genres. When I moved here earlier this year I was looking for a local FGC to meet up with fellow fighting game players and I couldn't find one, so I started my own!

If anyone is interested feel free to shoot me a DM and I can add you to our Discord! For now the plan is to host weekly online lobbies, but I'm looking into finding a venue in/around Ithaca where we can host in-person meetups and tournaments. I mostly play Tekken and Marvel Tokon at the moment, but open to playing and learning anything!

How would you go about teaching someone the basics of fighting games?

I have a friend that is interested in the genre, but to be honest I don't really know where to begin teaching a brand new player. I've been playing FGs for a long time now and have accumulated a lot of knowledge over time, but I don't want to drop too much info on them at once. That being said I also feel like just teaching someone basic footsies could be boring for someone that wants to have fun playing a game. Personally, I have a lot of experience in Tekken, but also have a basic understanding of 2D footsies, zoning, etc.

Anyone else find it difficult to maintain situational awareness in the heat of a match?

This is something I struggle with in all fighting games to be honest, but Tekken is my main game. This is an issue that I'm experiencing more recently because I'm trying to learn Feng (I'm a Jack main) and I'm finding that he has a toolkit where you need to know the right move for the right situation as opposed to a handful of moves that cover everything.

I spend a lot of time in the lab studying frames and figuring out the best time to use x move, but I find that in the moment in a match my mind goes completely autopilot and I just mash jabs and mid pokes on block mindlessly on defense and get counter hit to death. This is in quick match too so I can't even blame ranked anxiety lol. I find it really hard to focus on my opponent and I fall for the same frame traps over and over. I definitely need to work on my mental, but just thought I'd shared this and see if anyone else also deals with this.

Are all aspects viable at max Frenzy/Rivals?

Do you think all the aspects in Hades 2 are viable with max Frenzy/Rivals? I always try to have these maxed out since they are the vows that test mechanical skill the most.

I actually managed to do it with all the aspects, but for some of them it definitely felt like I relied a lot on RNG for broken builds. I’m curious if there’s still room for skill growth or if some aspects just don’t work consistently with these vows maxed out.

For context I have a solid income and about $50k in savings at 29 years old. I do not have any investments other than a 401k through my job. I believe I have more than enough for an emergency fund, so I’d like to put the rest of my savings to use but I don’t know where to start. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
