Pathway closure: Nellie McClung Park

Pathway closure: Nellie McClung Park

The MUP between 91 ave/Skunk Hollow and the fork in the trail by the Bison Lodge parking lot is closed for construction. I had to detour on my commute this morning and go back up the hill to Sask Drive.

TBF the asphalt in this area really needed a re-do, with all of the tree roots running underneath it.

Silly question re: 1st pension payment

If my last day of work is November 29, so my first day of retirement is November 30, do I receive a full pension payment for November? Or is it pro-rated? Or does it not kick in until December?

(Not referring to processing times or actual deposit dates, just the entitlement to the payment itself.)

ETA: Thanks to HoG for answering my question!

I know it wouldn't make logical sense to collect pension payments for the portion of the month when I was actually working, but I also know that sometimes the public service defies logic. 😂

The struggle is real

My ferritin has been on the low side for probably my entire menstruating life, but doctors have rarely flagged it for me. Perimenopause crime scene periods over the last 5 years has made it worse.

Symptoms: brain fog, fatigue, exercise intolerance (sometimes).

I've been taking supplements on and off for the past 2 years - first ferrous fumarate (Palafer) and more recently a polydextrose iron complex (FeraMax 150). I was able to get my ferritin from 24 to 36 in a year with Palafer, so I was hoping for even better results once I started the Feramax and pairing it with 1000mg vitamin C, following the iron protocol consistently for a few months.

I haven't been supplementing since early spring, awaiting follow up testing.

Well, I just had it re-checked and I am extremely underwhelmed! From 36 to 39 is definitely not the improvement I was hoping for.

For reference, my hemoglobin is 137g/L. Iron is 9 umol/L.

I've been on HRT for 2 years now and it's made my periods a lot more manageable-to-nonexistent, so I'm no longer losing a lot of blood.

I initially thought I had more energy when I was supplementing but maybe it was the placebo effect.

I don't know what to do! How long do people generally have to supplement before they know if it's going to actually work, or if they should try transfusion?

How and when to withdraw from a process without burning bridges

I've been looking for a post-retirement job to supplement my income but I've recently pushed my retirement date back by a few months, meaning I wouldn't be able to start something new until November-December.

I had a phone screening interview this morning for an interesting role with what looks like a great organization; however, the role they're currently interviewing for would start in September (or October at the latest). I mentioned that I wasn't looking to start until late fall/early winter.

The HR person doing the screening said that the start date could be discussed with the manager at the next interview, but from the other context they gave about the job duties (delivering a specific program that starts on a specific date), I don't think it's going to be the right fit for what I'm looking for.

They've already invited me via email to the next round of interviews.

While I do want to drop out of the process for this specific role due to timing, I would like to be considered for future positions that come up.

Should I:

- send an email right away withdrawing from the process, citing the timing/my availability, and expressing that I would be interested in future opportunities;

- go through with the interview regardless and see what comes out of the discussion on start dates;

- something else?

I don't want to waste their time, or mine, if I know I wouldn't accept a position on the current terms.

New bike theft technique unlocked? 😦

I had to park my bike outside my workplace yesterday because there were no spots left at the indoor bike rack. Locked it up in a high-traffic area with both a folding bar lock and a ulock with a motion sensitive alarm.

When I got to the bike rack after work, my rear tire was flatter than flat with a big gash in it (clean cut).

Suddenly a young guy appeared out of nowhere on a bmx and asked if I needed help fixing my tire. I said no, I'm taking care of it, and he went away thank god.

I can't see how someone could fix a badly slashed tire without replacing the entire tire and tube, and why would someone be carrying around a spare for a gravel bike just in case, lol.

Maybe I'm too suspicious for my own good but it occurred to me that he might have been the one who slashed the tire and would steal my bike as soon as I unlocked it, or was hoping I'd leave the bike overnight at the rack so they would have more privacy and time to cut the locks (similar to thieves adding another lock to a bike so the owner can't remove it from the rack).

Anyhow, I'm never leaving my bike unattended outside for 6 hours again. I knew it was a risk and I paid for it.

Has this type of thing happened to anyone else?

A small win!

I had a job interview this morning that went really well (I think!) and a big part of that success was because I asked for, and received, accommodations!

This was the first time I'd ever requested accommodations during a job competition process after being diagnosed two years ago. I've had other interviews recently but I was too scared to request accommodations.

This time around, the lead recruiting person contacted me a day ahead of the interview to discuss the process and see if I had any questions. I asked her if it would be possible to receive the interview questions ten minutes in advance so I'd have a chance to organize my thoughts. And she said yes!

It made such a difference. Plus, I saw it as an opportunity for the organization to "walk the talk" on inclusion (which is front and center to their brand).

I'm really proud of myself for asking.

Wavy hair + bike helmet?

I'm guessing that my hair is 2b, and I have a significant amount of grey, making those strands coarser. It's just past chin length, and is lightened with highlights. And it's quite thick.

I used to have my hair fully lightened and coloured pink/purple but I've transitioned to just blonde highlights, on my way to no longer colouring it at all.

I've recently started embracing my natural waves after years/decades of blow-drying and straightening. I've only been experimenting with Swavy methods for a few weeks.

Currently making my way through the last of the products I already own, including:

- Joico colour protecting shampoo

- Joico purple shampoo (to prevent brassiness)

- AG clarifying shampoo

- Chi colour protecting conditioner

- Rusk mousse

- Verb ghost hairspray

Last week I picked up some Not Your Mother's curl gel and 10-in-1 since it was on sale.

I also have some Hairstory New Wash cowash left over from a couple of years ago that I'm interested in trying again but I'll have to make sure it's still good to use after being open for that long. (Hate to throw it out because it's expensive but I'd switched to the coloir conserving products because the cowash wasn't doing what I needed it to do in my fashion colour days lol.)

Routine:

- wash every other day, shampooing twice then conditioning, combing, and rinsing. I use the clarifying shampoo and the purple shampoo about once a week each.

- either applying mousse when hair is dripping wet and then blotting moisture out with a microfiber towel, or blotting moisture first then applying gel and the 10-in-1

- sometimes experimenting with plopping to see if it works, and having mixed results

- diffusing until just damp

- scrunching when dry (no oil)

- sometimes bit of hairspray after

Heavier products definitely weigh down my hair, so I'm being cautious with the 10-in-1 making sure to only apply it sparingly to ends.

I sleep with my hair as pineappled as possible given that it's shorter, and wear a silk bonnet.

My 2nd day hair is a bit oily at the roots, especially the crown. I can revive my waves pretty well with a spray of water, though they're looser and messier. If I want to look a bit more polished on day 2 I'll add a few beach waves with a flatiron.

I bike to work daily and wear a helmet. Often my hair is still a little bit damp when I leave for work, so I'll try to plop it into the helmet in an attempt to preserve the waves and volume, but it definitely affects the final result in terms of root volume and wave/curl formation. I also have breakouts on my scalp, probably helmet-related.

Any tips or tricks for any of the above? Maybe I should just be washing every day in the summer to manage the breakouts.

Leakproof travel mug?

Looking for recommendations for a leakproof and dishwasher safe travel mug for my morning coffee!

Capacity: in the 350ml to 500ml range (12 to 16 oz)

I have a Yeti tumbler that I like but the mag slide lid is not leakproof, and replacement lids by other manufacturers don't quite fit right.

Recommended shrubs and perennials for condo building landscaping (Edmonton)

I live in a walk-up condo building in Edmonton with a south-facing entrance. We (the condo board) have hired a landscaping company to re-do our front flowerbed, removing some old perennials and shrubs that are currently overgrown with weeds and planting some new ones.

The flowerbed occasionally gets some foot traffic, as we live in a busy area across from a school. It borders our sidewalk so there can be some collateral damage in winter from salt/de-icer. The flowerbed has full sun exposure.

No doubt the landscaping company will have some recommendations when it comes time to choose what to plant, but I'm looking for ideas. What would you plant in this situation that can stand up to these conditions and doesn't require a lot of maintenance?

ERI approved, deadline for finalizing retirement date?

Once an ERI application is approved, is there an actual deadline to submit a resignation letter with a retirement date (beyond the obvious, i.e., need to be gone by January 20, 2027 and with enough time for the pension center to process the paperwork)?
