Issues with MIL

I, F31 am married to M33. We have been in a relationship since university (2011) and are married since 2023. I have Chinese roots (born in Europe) but both my parents were born in South Vietnam (my dad passed away when I was 11). His parents (divorced) are from North Vietnam. We all live in Europe. Both of us lived with our moms (his dad is not really in the picture) and siblings until we got married.

Since the very beginning of our relationship, I had the feeling his family never liked me. I am an introvert, so not someone with many words nor am I good at keeping a conversation going but my parents raised me to be polite so I always react kindly to any questions they have. But these questions never felt like they actually were interested in either me or my family. Just all superficial questions. For all these years we have been dating, it has been like that. I don’t know how to put it but I could really see on their face they were not really happy with me and they were not trying to hide that. So in all these years, I almost never visited my boyfriends house (maybe twice a year)? Whenever it was her birthday, I always got her a nice presents (quite decent things I would say, like small kitchen appliances/Coach bag/Swarovski jewellery etc using my student salary) even though she was not always celebrating it. But I know they sometimes went for dinner. And the other times when I visited their house was for example during Christmas when also friends of his mom were there, also his brothers girlfriend (Vietnamese) was there. I always found these times very hard as his mom always praised the girlfriend in front of her friends like she was the best person in the world, always served her all the food, while completely ignoring me. I also never knew if she actually invited me or if my boyfriend just asked if I could come too..

Now as some may know, Asian parents are quite strict. Most of them want their children and their future husband/wives to have decent jobs in order to live a comfortable life. I studied medicines and have a decent Scientific job, so I would not say they don’t like me because of my background? (My husband works in IT). Basically, I could never pinpoint why they (his mom and younger brother) never liked me. Is it because of my Chinese/South Vietnamese roots? I really don’t think I ever did something wrong to them.

When my husband and I were planning our wedding a few years ago, I also mentioned to him that in our culture we ask the groom (and/or his family) to prepare a dowry (my family asked for €2800). To be honest, it’s nowadays more like a symbolic thing as my family will give back 80% of that dowry in hong bao/lay xi (red envelope with money) to them. Anyways, he asked his mom to help him with the dowry and she immediately refused. She said that it was too much money, and why she needed to pay that money to my family. So after a few discussions between him and me (I didnt dare to tell my mom what his mom said), he decided to pay it himself. Even though, we were already paying already so much for the wedding ourselves (50/50), his mom didn’t want to help him for a slight bit. When I heard about her refusal, I was hurt. I agree this part can be a bit controversial as his mom doesnt owe me anything, but it is a cultural thing and it doesnt feel right.

Fast forward to our wedding day, she was physically there but she clearly was not happy for us nor did she enjoy the day. I peeked at her several times and I couldnt find the tiniest smile on her face. A lot of my family members noticed that too and found it VERY strange and inappropriate behaviour. Also, she did not speak a word with me on our wedding day.. she barely even looked at me..

Fast forward again, a few months after our marriage we moved into our new appartment. My mom and family from my side got us very nice housewarming gifts (even though with did not have any housewarming party). This is just what you do as family, you are happy for the newly wed couple and congratulate them by gifting things for the new house. Well, we have been living in this appartment for 2 years now and she never visited (at least not when I was home) or gifted anything.

So now what has been bothering me lately is, my husband told me that he will be away for the weekend as he needed to help his mom paint a room. She moved to a new appartment 1 year ago, and to my knowing they painted that whole appartment back then already. So I found it strange that he had to paint the room again. It got me thinking, and I found out it is also his brother’s birthday this week. So probably they were planning to celebrate this together without inviting me? I told myself I could be overthinking, but today I overheard my husband and his moms call and they were literally discussing where they wanted to eat out for dinner.

It hurts so much thinking my husband is agreeing with excluding me too? As an introvert, I am happy to skip a social event but as a wife to someone, as part of the family, it doesnt feel good to be actively be excluded.

Should I talk to my husband about this? Should I just let it and pretend I never heard their call? I am just so confused and hurt right now
