Moclans vs. Ferengi: Which species do you like better?

Though both Star Trek and The Orville have a species designed mainly to be the "sexist race", I think the Orville does a far better job at showing it than Star Trek, for several reasons.

  1. Compelling female characters balance out the episodes focused on the species. Kelly, Claire, and Talla are all much stronger characters than Kira or Jadzia, with more focus on them.

  2. They receive disdain from other members of the crew, unlike the Deep Space Nine crew who just accept it as normal.

  3. The character at the center is much more sympathetic. Bortus is a lot more open-minded than Quark, so it's better to have him as the central focus.

Each season is a different style, and that’s interesting

It feels like each season tries to appeal to a different style of storytelling.

Season 1: Classic episodic adventures, like TOS

Season 2: Character-focused episodes, like ‘90s Trek, with a couple gimmicks

Season 3: More serialized storyline, even balance of gimmicks and regular adventures, it alternates

Season 4: All gimmicks (only three episodes that aren’t known to be gimmicks)

What do people think of this method?

What's the general consensus on Season 3 here?

Starting Season 3, and I definitely miss the comedy, character development, and personalities of the first two seasons. Just feels like it became a more serialized version of Star Trek, rather than a funny version.

Typical early season DS9 episode

Quark: I want a proper naked female!

Jadzia: I used to be a man.

Bashir: I still love you anyway!

Quark: But what about my gold-pressed latinum?

Odo: Please go away, Quark.

Sisko: Old Man, please man the comms even though this is a space station.

Kira: I should do it! I’m always angry!

O’Brien: Do I even have a purpose here?

Jake: I can’t help you with that!

Quark: Just help me get some stupid females!

Are there any absolutely necessary episodes to watch before Worf arrives in the show?

Worf is one of my favorite characters from TNG, and I hear that when he becomes a main character, the show adopts a coherent storyline instead of just being episodic, which I’m growing tired of, as it’s already so repetitive by the end of Season 2. I’m curious at what point it’s supposed to become the “best Star Trek series ever” and if I should watch any important episodes before heading straight to Season 4.

Week off with no announcement?

Seems like Smoshalike and Smosh both took this week off (and no Wednesday games vid.) Would prefer to know ahead of time why a show like URL is moved to Saturday or if there’s no Bit City for example.

Not allowed to publish a new chapter?

I'm probably going to be moving to A03 for good at some point due to all the scam and spams, but I noticed I'm no longer allowed to copy and paste text into the doc manager to use for a new chapter. Is this an error?

Can I have some help overcoming my ferengiphobia?

I know this sounds silly, but I'm really trying to watch this show and enjoy the rest of it. I just get an anxiety attack whenever a Ferengi mentions "females" or how sexist Ferengi life is for them, or interact with women because I know they don't see them as people.

Anyone here watch Voyager first?

Curious to know if any people in this subreddit watched Voyager as their first show. If so, were you confused by Lieutenant Janeway in TNG, or Admiral Chekote in DS9?

What am I missing about this show?

I know this is one of the most-loved Star Trek series, but I'm just not getting it. On Season 2, and it still has yet to feel like the character-development heavy serialized show people praise it as. Just feels like it's more political than TNG, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I just don't understand several characters and their motivations. Wish we could see more of Jadzia, does she ever have an identity crisis from being a symbiont or something like that? Sisko also doesn't seem to really have a personality of his own yet, he just seems like a generic authoritarian. Surprisingly, as much as I hate Ferengi, I like Quark better than Julian, who seems to so far only be defined by his obsession with Jadzia. Wish we saw more of O'Brien as well.

I’ve come to realize Strange New Worlds is in many ways a parallel to Voyager. Not just because of the gender ratio being completely opposite, but also because it tries to distinguish itself from the previous series by going back to basics of Star Trek with exploration, but also contains characters who are like mirrors to each other. Some parallels:

Pike/Janeway: Pike is friends with his crew from the start, whereas Janeway becomes friends with her crew over the course of the series. Both seem a lot closer to their crew members than Picard, for instance.

Spock/Seven: Interesting parallel as a breakout character who gets most of the storylines, although Seven was a natural successor to Spock to begin with.

Ortegas/Kim: An opposite situation: Kim gets so little to do that he ends up as the show’s straight man, whereas Ortegas gets so little to do that she mainly serves as comic relief.

Pelia/Neelix: Both quirky and odd characters, though they’re smarter than they seem.

Chakotay and Una are also both first officers who dealt with prejudice because of their races and get little to do, although Chakotay’s is because of his ancestors and Una was genetically altered.

M’Benga and Uhura aren’t much like B’Elanna and Tom, though the former does have a warrior history and Uhura is a new cadet in contrast to Tom’s criminal past. La’an is also upset with her augment-descended status in contrast to Tuvok being perfectly content as a Vulcan, and Chapel is a very emotional character who becomes colder, a contrast to The Doctor.
