Convicted sex offender offered opening prayer at rally for GOP Senate nominee in North Carolina

>King’s prayer and Whatley’s association with the former GOP official Harvey L. West Jr., the other convicted sex offender, could prove particularly problematic as the Republican Senate candidate seeks to shore up support from hard-right conservatives, said Chris Cooper, a political science professor at Western Carolina University who is not related to the former governor.

West also said he was familiar with King’s convictions and warned others in the party about associating with the pastor when he was considered for a GOP position. “I just said, ‘Hey, y’all might want to take a look at this,’” said West.

In NC’s Senate race, Republican lies about Cooper hit an appalling new low | Opinion

>It’s unfortunately common for politicians to sugarcoat or cherry-pick information to their benefit. But even by today’s standards, Whatley and his fellow Republicans are running an egregiously dishonest campaign, creating narratives that ignore established facts and invent new ones out of whole cloth.

Whatley’s lobbying work not featured on campaign website

>His public bio does not mention his career as a lobbyist. Whatley spent more than a decade lobbying for oil and natural gas companies. In 2009, he helped found a lobbying and public relations firm, HBW Resources.

>Spectrum News reviewed 12 years of lobbying disclosure reports that show Whatley and other lobbyists reported receiving $3.5 million for their work, and $1.2 million of that money came from energy-related clients.

In Cumberland, Whatley taking cash from Chemours not so great | Opinion

>Inevitably, forever chemicals have become part of the U.S. Senate campaign, one of the nation's most closely watched, between Republican Michael Whatley, a former GOP state party chair, and former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper. And Chemours is spattering Whatley with its muddy name. Its Political Action Committee over the spring donated $5,000 to the Republican candidate.

What role could PFAS play in North Carolina's closely watched U.S. Senate race?

https://www.wunc.org/politics/2026-07-17/chemours-pfas-senate-race

>Company officials have admitted that the plant discharged forever chemicals into the Cape Fear River for decades, largely under DuPont before it spun Chemours off amid mounting legal liabilities. Those discharges polluted the primary drinking water source for Wilmington and its surrounding area, while air emissions carrying PFAS polluted groundwater around the plant.

>Now, Chemours is weighing in on North Carolina's closely watched U.S. Senate race, with its corporate political action committee contributing $5,000 to GOP candidate Michael Whatley's campaign.

Whatley stood by Trump’s Jan. 6 pardons despite sex crime charges

>Whatley’s tolerance of this behavior risks drawing attention to another scandal. From 2019 to 2024, he served as chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party. During that time, he appointed Harvey West to two party committees, according to a March report by the Asheville Watchdog, despite West having pleaded guilty in 2000 to taking indecent liberties with a minor.
