Uuuuh is it normal for people to rent out basements?

Clearly I'm new to this whole roommate thing. I turn 18 in less than a month and I've been homeless for quite a while, so I'm looking for a roommate until I can get a job and my own place. I don't have that big of a monthly budget right now. She said she could go lower on the budget if I was willing to move into her partially-furnished basement. Is this usual? Lol. I'm pretty open to it.

CPS is such a joke

They're always so quick to remove children out of houses for such minor things, yet when a child is CLEARLY being hurt they suddenly turn a blind eye to it. If a kid is abused to the point where they die and a CPS worker keeps refusing to do anything about it, they should be just as liable as the parents.

Should I even try anymore? 🧍‍♀️

I'm 17 & homeless and I'm trying to look for work but it's SO hard. And please don't hit me with the "Have you tried the military?" bullshit because I know my fatass can't qualify for shit. I'm currently applying for remote customer service jobs because it's the only thing I can do since I don't have a car right now. I know customer service is already pretty competitive and I'd already have low chances with being 17 but I just feel like it shouldn't be THIS hard to find one. At this point I might just have to suck it up & wake up extra early to take 35 minute long walks to the nearest grocery store just to make some money 😭

My son is a disappointment

I’m not really sure what to do at this point, so I thought fuck it, why not ask Reddit.

I’m 48 years old and my 21 year old son is a complete loser. I don’t want to hear any lecture about me being a bad parent, or this or that because I’m not. There’s just something wrong with that kid. He doesn’t shower, he doesn’t brush his teeth and he smells like my toilet after I take a shit. Just last night I caught him shaking his unwashed bare ass on discord for some man older than me. If I was a worse father I may have just beat his ass then and there. And don’t get me started on the smell of his room. I’d rather not go there, but it is traumatizingly bad. And I’ve smelled some nasty shit. I used to work as a porta potty cleaner in my younger days, and the smell from those literal shit holes are less oppressive that whatever compounds the decomposing bacteria on my son’s overweight fat rolls produce.

He doesn’t have a job, and I have to tell my fully grown son to clean his room. Which by the way looks just as gross as him. There are literal piles of dirty laundry, walls of just trash everywhere. I literally can’t go two steps without touching some gross half rotted food, or some disgusting unwashed pair of stained briefs. He refuses to do anything about it, and can’t even bring himself to peel his ass off the chair and take a very much needed shower. What do I even do in this situation? he has no drive to progress in life and is completely content with leeching off my money and spreading his dna all over his chair like some sort of gross financial parasite.

I think I'm being groomed? 🧍‍♀️

So I'm in a bit of a pickle. Basically I've been homeless for a while and this Friday my mom called her "friend" and she let us (me, my mom, and my sister) stay with her until September 1st.

The thing is September 1st is dangerously close to my birthday; September 8th. I would turn 18. This woman is in her 70s and she's also unable to retire but she physically can't work anymore and she doesn't know if she can find an online job any time soon. She's been isolating me from my mother and telling me that she thinks my mom is manipulating me and my sister and she thinks I'd love a better life without my mom, so she's offering me to stay later past September 1st until I get a job and my own place to live. The thing is I know she knows that I'm desperate for financial stability. If I can get a decent job and make approximately $2,000 a month, she wouldn't have to work anymore. She's already been giving me a lot of "special" treatment that my mom would never give me. On Thursday she has off work and she's offering to get my hair done & buy me new clothes. Every time I show any sort of affection for my mom or even suggest that I may live with my mom if she finds a house before September 1st she gets a little agitated and I'm not sure what to make of it either. She also bought my phone for me and has COMPLETE control over it so I'm a bit scared that I'd lose all contact with my mom if this truly is a grooming situation.

I'm just really not sure what to do at this point because if my mom doesn't get a place by September 1st I'm completely screwed in homeless. If I stay with this lady then I'm not sure if I'll start to be financially abused. Is this grooming or am I just going crazy?🧍‍♀️

Should I leave my disabled mother homeless?

Put your tomatoes down for just a second. Let me explain:

Me, my sister, and my mom have been homeless for over a year now. All of this happened because she unfortunately became disabled and unable to work, losing her job and financial stability with that. We were living in hotels for a while. I've been trying to get a job but I have severe anxiety that's almost disabling and my mom's car is completely broken and public transportation is very scarce in my area, and I have no one else to take me to work, nor can I drive myself. Just this Friday, my mom ran out of money to pay for these hotels and we had to be in the car. Like I said, the car is COMPLETELY broke down. No way to drive it, charge any phones, or even have any AC. My mom called one of her friends and asked if we could stay with her. Fortunately, she said yes.

Here's where the problem is... I talked with the lady that's letting me stay with her a little bit and she ended up telling me my mom has manipulated her & used her for money as well as many others for quite some time. Apparently even people I know personally have told her to stay away from my mom because all she will do is screw them over. She said my mom has until September 1st to stay with her... BUT, depending on what her leasing office says, she said me and my sister can stay with her longer until we find jobs and get our own places. I turn 18 on September 8th so custody or legal stuff probably won't be an issue. She told me she only let my mom stay with her because she feels terrible for me and my sister.

This would probably leave my mom homeless. All of this information is so new to me and I've only ever seen my mom as a hardworking person who wants nothing but the best for her kids. I don't want to leave my own mother in the streets and disabled. But I also really want to get my life together and live normally. The anxiety of being homeless has caused me severe trauma and I just don't know how much longer I can deal with it. This is a huge decision for me. :')

Why are there SO many people who prioritize the lives of animals over humans?

To be clear, I'm NOT an animal hater. I do not think we should just leave animals to suffer or something like that. I just don't understand why so many people will seemingly choose the life of a random dog rather than a person's life (or even their own). For example, I'll see situations all the time where someone will steal a dog from a homeless person without actually being interested in helping the homeless person at all. To me, that's also seem very counterintuitive because of the stress it may put on the dog, but that's a whole other can of worms to open. I feel like most human nature can be very easily explained by evolution, but evolutionarily, this just doesn't make any sense to me. As an animal, your number one goal is to preserve your species, so why do so many people seem to go against that natural instinct?

The loss of hobbies.

I feel like people forget just how much of a fortune hobbies are until you lose the money to have them. I'd love to be able to collect dolls & other little toys & trinkets from my childhood. I'd love to be able to sew & DIY my own clothes... but you need money and time to do that. That's money and time that I do not have! All of my money is going towards saving for a shelter & necessities & all of my time is going towards resources and job searching. I know you don't need money for every hobby in the world, but it's just a shame to lose the hobbies you once had that DO require money.

Teen in meed help with stable housing

Hi! To keep it short my mom became disabled in 2024 due to cellulitis. It caused her to lost her job and we ultimately lost our house before her disability payments rolled in. She now only gets $1,100 a month which just isn't enough to keep shelter for her recovery and save for an apartment. I'm 17 and I've been trying to find a job but it's been really rough. All I need is enough for a security deposit and maybe some minor fees for a one bedroom apartment until I actually get a job and can save for somewhere a little more decent. Anything helps, thank you!
