There used to be some great MP3 and personal media players years ago.

Now everything is either some super high-end stuff, or some cheap stuff, from brands I've never heard of before.

I know the character of Sherlock Holmes is partially based on Dr. Joseph Bell. But I was wondering about his physical description.

Did Doyle have anyone in mind when creating Holmes' physical characteristics?

Performing searches online just gets me results pointing back to Dr. Joseph Bell, as a source of the character's mental capabilities, or sites just repeating the physical description we get in the stories. I even found one that created an image combining different actors' faces, but obviously, these people did not yet exist when Doyle was writing.

Doyle was pretty tall, himself, so I think he might have partially based Holmes on himself, but he definitely wasn't a very lean character.

The thing could be tangible, such as clothes, furniture, etc.; or intangible, such as information.

Manufacturers don't make the thing? No problem! Google not finding the relevant search results? No problem!

If I can't find it, I can summon it. If I can find it, I can't summon it. Easy-peasy.

I'm listening to Sherlock Holmes audiobooks in the Russian language. I recognize most of them, but there is one I can't find the corresponding English version. I've noticed only Russian-language websites show up.

The story is credited to Arthur Conan Doyle, so I was assuming that he wrote it. But for the life of me, I cannot find the original English story.

I've tried searching on Google for character names that I can recognize (Lord Coxville, etc.), but absolutely nothing relevant shows up.

Some of the story titles translate straight into Russian, i.e., "The Adventure of the Gloria Scott" is given as «Глория Скотт». Others seem to use more idiomatic translations. "The Adventure of Silver Blaze" is given as «Серебряная Молния»; when I search for that story online, I get results for zippers, lol.

I'm assuming, therefore, that «Нож Танцовщицы» is also an idiomatic translation. There's no story titled "The Adventure of the Dancer's Knife."

I'm starting to think this story is not an actual Conan Doyle story.

I did this to myself, lol. I wanted to see some humorous/ridiculous adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, and it didn't take long to find this one.

It's an Asylum movie from 2010, titled simply Sherlock Holmes.

Just watched it for the first time, and I want to discuss its ridiculousness, but don't want to spoil it for anybody who hasn't seen it yet.

I found it to be surprisingly enjoyable for what it was, but there were some definite "what the heck is going on here" moments, and I'm not talking about the dinosaur, lol.

Among other things, we discover >!that Sherlock Holmes' first name is Robert. And that he has a brother named Thorpe, who's gone mad.!<

This is sort of like a Plan 9 from Outer Space of Sherlock Holmes movies, without the aliens.

It can be ad-supported, but will never be as bad as Alphabet/Google and the way in which they destroyed YouTube.

It will have a fully functional search mechanism that actually works, unlike YouTube's.

It will stream even better, and more smoothly than YouTube.

YouTube/Google/Alphabet execs will be green with envy, but will never be able to buy, nor destroy, this new platform.

This new platform will be also be Tesla/X/Elon Musk-proof; Jeff Bezos-proof; i.e. greedy bastard-proof.

Any person or persons, corporation, or other entity, whether existing now or in the future, will never be able to ruin this platform; never be able to enshittify this platform; nor be able to take this platform offline, ever.

Only people or entities, whether existing now, or in the future, who are genuinely interested in building/maintaining such a platform will be able to contribute to it; and there shall be no shortages of any such people or entities, from henceforth.
