Avicii progression

Avicii is my biggest inspiration for producing. I love his entire discography. And one day I hope to be able to make folk/prog house.

His earlier stuff more “beep boop”, I’m thinking like last dance. I absolutely love the track.

I’m curious for some thoughts how he progressed as an artist. To me his earlier stuff seems much easier to make than stuff from True.

I’ve been producing for 7 months from no musical background.

How did Avicii progress from super digital edm sounding stuff to being able to work well with live recording and artists so quickly?

Using strings

How can I start incorporating guitars and strings into my tracks?

I’ve been producing for 7 months and stick to drums synths pianos etc very housey stuff.

I’ve always had a passion for folk stuff and would love to incorporate strings and guitars in my stuff.

I’m assuming it works the same as synths with theory and piano roll.

But in ableton can I achieve this its stock plugins? Any suggestions of plugins that could help since I can’t play guitar myself to record it in!

How to progress

I’m at the stage I can make a track that will have mix problems, maybe some sound design stuff off, ya know minor/basic issues.

Do I just keep hammering songs out to practice? I have no problem doing that but I’m not sure if my last few songs are truly getting better.

I just got feedback from a known producer and he instantly said my sounds were fighting and I agree.

I struggle with trying to get more tracks per project I know people say it doesn’t matter but pros have like 60-80 or more. I try to layer a couple mid basses and synths and it’s instantly clashing to better ears than mine.

I love my songs even if they aren’t amazing I can groove to them and I love the process.

But after 7 months from no background I’m wondering how to maximize my 1-2 hours I get a day.

Waveform signaling phase issues?

Hi I am just beginning to learn about phasing and how it can lower the overall output by canceling out the sounds that are out of phase.

I made a rough loop yesterday didn’t do much mixing or anything at all other than building the drop loop. As you can see the second half of the drop is lower than the first half of the drop.

It’s the exact same apart from I added, a top loop, a ride loop, and 16th closed hat.

The low part of the waveform is intentional just to clarify it’s a dropout before the drop comes back in for 2nd part.

Sub fundamentals

When a sub patch looks like this vs obvious fundamentals is it bad? Does having a big “blob” like this cause potential issue versus a sub with clear fundamentals and peaks?

Sorry if this is a noob question just started learning more about fundamentals :)

Percs and toms

Where do you guys place perc and tom one shots so they don’t get covered in a house beat?

I find them either sounding random or lost behind the kick and clap.

Writing melodies

Has anyone had experience with hearing the melody but not being able to find the notes?

I have theory knowledge to the extent of knowing notes keys chords etc, not so much about knowing how to resolve where and when.

But I do hear melodies, I commonly will try to get a 4 bar melody, I get the (a) section and hear what I want for the (B) or the response to the call from A!

But I just don’t know how to get it out

Layering leads and chords

I just watched this video because I’ve been wanting to make progressive house https://youtu.be/BK\_LKUeqXpQ?si=oEIYNtkWIlJeS8qM.

One day I’m told not to layer sounds because it over complicates and muddies the mix. Then I see stuff like this the guy layers 5 leads, then adds 3-4 chords layers, and even a couple mid bass layers.

The midi is also not even the same pattern between the leads and chords and basses.

He doesn’t even EQ individual layers to make them fit.
HOW? This is like my biggest question with production to date. If I did this it would be a muddy mess.

Sub Frequencies between first and second fundamental

Hey everyone! I’m really trying to nail down my understanding and mixing of my sub and low mids. After a fair bit of research and watching videos on span breakdowns, it seems like after your kick and sub there should be a dip around 175-275 HZ ish before the rising for the mids and highs. I know it’s never a one size fits all and genres can impact and make differences!

My question though if that dip is expected often and purposeful what’s the dip I always see before it.

For example my kick and sub are sitting in key together around 58 HZ and yes they are side chained. If my understanding is right that’s the first fundamental, then it has a good dip for the second fundamental and the tailing off of the kick until about 150-175 hz depending on the note of my sub.

I’ve attached a picture of my span. Should I be doing something to fill that 60-150 range? Adding saturation to my sub, increasing level? I’m really curious why all the videos ignore this “dip” but all say the one around 175-275 is very common!

LUFS and Span Readings

Hi all, I’ve recently been learning about the more technical stuff and find it super interesting. Went back to some of my recent tracks to see how they look.

I’m confused how I’m seeing -9 LUFS (right in the desired range for a finished track to be released I believe)?

But then my span shows levels so low lol. This is from my drop. My highs are way too low I see now and probably a little too much around 200-1000.

I watched a great video from AHEE talking about your sub being between -24 to -30 and it should dip after that around 200, and then your highs should match the lows?

Curious for some thoughts from yall!!!

Pin plugin windows?

Is there a way to pin my metering plugins on my master on a different screen? Just started getting into metering and would love to have them up when I’m tweaking other tracks but obviously ableton hides the window if you move to a different track

Tech House clap

I have been hearing this drum groove with this punchy af clap that sounds like it closes after the transient and it makes the groove so good. I’m a beginner so could be wrong but that’s how it sounds to my ears and how I can explain it lol.

I have three songs below that I hear this groove and this amazing clap in and I really wanna recreate this style but my clap never hits like this.

Dom Dolla - Addicted to Bass
Max Styler - I know you want to
Westend - The Ceiling

The claps sound so punchy and saturated and then like they get closed maybe a gated reverb? I don’t know but it makes the groove soooo good.

Surely someone knows how to achieve this sound or can confirm I’m not crazy and my 4 on the floor with a clap on 2,4 and an off beat open hat is not hitting like these for a reason!

What is wrong with our society!

I started producing in November 2025, purely from passion and I’m finally making things that make me look back at my journey so far and be like wow, this is rewarding already can’t imagine what will come in the next few years. I get 5-10 listens a track on my very amateur tracks I make, mainly family and friends and people from here giving feedback.

I never had Reddit before getting it to help with learning production, this community and others in the production world have been so crazy helpful and so many people have gone out of there way to help a total stranger. It’s pretty amazing, Au5 a legend of the game has even responded to some of my posts answering questions. Unreal!

I’ve been fighting an issue though the past few weeks. I have a close knit friend group of myself and 5 other guys. Best friends since we were 10, matching tattoos, college roommates no beef ever. 1 of them is very very into edm mainly dubstep.

They have been the least supportive of this production journey of mine. These are supposed to be my groomsmen and 1 of them will be my best man in my wedding a year from today.

I send them all my tracks and snippets of what I’m working on and they just never answer, don’t even follow me on SoundCloud or like my songs.

I’m the kinda person… if one of my best friends was chasing something I could give a toss what it is I’d be infatuated for them and obsessed with supporting them.

One of my old teammates is blowing up right now on instagram as a fitness guy and he made a post saying how crazy it is random people who never met him show more love than his “day 1s”.

It’s honestly pissing me off and making me question even wanting any of them in my life, am I being dramatic here? If you can’t even take 2 min to like my song on SoundCloud but you each send me 10 reels a day you’re showing me your priorities..?

Curious for thoughts lol!

Clipping vs channel output

My bass layer says it’s clipping all the way through the chain and I added a clipper at the end of the chain and it shows just that.

Its analyzer shows the input is clipping just barely and it’s reducing peaks without me even adjusting and parameters.

My channel output shows -13db though after my fader adjustments.

Is my chain maybe showing the output without accounting for the fader..? But still showing the peak volume with the fader accounted for? I’m so confused.

Here’s a picture with my clipper and the signal chain showing its clipping from the beginning.

Reverb/delay throws

Hey everyone had a question that may be too granular, or not!

I was wondering when you do throws do you turn off the reverb or delay you have on that track if your using a different and more in your face reverb or delay for the throw?

For example, I have a some synth chords and I have them to a return track with some delay on it (not crazy, but noticeable if you turn it off).

If I wanted to do a delay throw for example at the end of every 4th bar would you turn off the return track delay and automate the new delay to avoid getting muddy? Or when working with delays/reverb throws is it common practice to just increase the level or send amount of the already used delay/reverb?

Clipping groups in mixing stage to create headroom for master

Hi everyone, just started learning about clipping and feel like I understand it easy enough. I was wondering though about use cases for different elements.

Would you say clip groups to create more headroom for when you go to push the limiter later on of the entire track?
So soft clip my drums, vocals, leads, bass? At the end of my mixing chain I guess?

Would you ever need to worry about clipping individual tracks?

I just got Kclip3 and watched a few vids it was pretty crazy to see how much db you can save by clipping drum group for example to tame some transients so you can get a louder mix.

Any advice or things to be aware of with clipping?

Clip gain/reduction consolidating or warping

Hey I’m pretty confused why ableton will adjust my clip gain when I consolidate a clip even with just blank space but why it does it at all, I think it does it for when splitting stems too after I warped the reference track.

Should I reset the clips back to 0db before doing anything else? Will the gain or reduction mess with my levels I had them set at?

Amp envelope retrigger

Hi I hope someone is able to help me out. I’m trying to automate the release of my bassline for tension in the buildup to go from more of a pluck to pad. I duplicated the track and turned off legato and mono.

But how can I get the envelope to stop re triggering for each new note i think it’s still canceling the longer release, I know this because I have a 1/8th note gap at the end of every other bar in which I can hear the release be held during that gap until it eventually re triggers after the gap.
