Language and innovation in music
Today, English language is less dominant on the global scene than it has been for at least 50 years, and I believe that its role is only diminishing in the future. A band like Rammstein used to be a clear outlier, while now we have the global phenomenons of K-pop, reggaeton, anime songs, Joost Klein, Käärijä -- the list go on & on, and didn't even touch the growing interest in ethnical music.
So, this is something about music that has changed a lot in pretty quick time.
But when people discuss possible future progress of music online... well, they usually talk about music theory and music technology, often concluding that it's really hard, if not impossible, to do anything new anymore. Of course, lately, more and more people seem to dismiss the pure human potential entirely, and see AI as the answer to everything.
Although most of such discussions that I've read seemed to be more focused on relatively vocal-centric music, I haven´t seen much talk about the role of language in this context.
Last couple of years, I have listened to more and more music in all kind of different languages, without English being a preference anymore. I would say that the toolkit of verbal language -- the prosodics -- is able to shape the music around it in major ways.
After all, the genres with emphasis on singing, used to form around a singular mother tongue. Around the world, rock, hiphop, even country was also performed in other languages, but everybody knew that it all began in English. And we can see the same with other languages, too -- flamenco, schlager, bel canto, ye-ye, dangdut... Again, this list could just go on and on.
The flowing, yet intense nature of flamenco wouldn't really mesh with English language without changing non-singing elements, making it arguably "less flamenco". And why hasn't the huge global popularity of reggaeton resulted in English-language reggaeton hits? Probably because it would just sound... off? (But let's make it tropical house).
My native tongue is Estonian. Many of our singers have spoken about the ongoing struggle of working with Estonian lyrics in American-born forms, such as rock and jazz. (Our language seem to favour bluesier and punkier approaches.
While I've been fascinated with this aspect of music, I haven't really delved into the related academic research. Am I putting too much importance to it?

youtu.beViimaks ometi Eesti "KEXP"? (igati pro ylesvõte Skoone laivist)
Me elame laividest tehtud (suht)professionaalsete audio-videosalvestuste kuldajastul. Kunagi varem pole nende tegemiseks & jagamiseks olnud nii häid võimalusi.
Ning neid võimalusi ka kasutatakse järjest rohkem. Kõige tuntum kanal, kuhu regulaarselt (viimasel ajal eriti ohtralt) ilmub hoolikalt kureeritud artistide laiv-ylesvõtteid, on Seattle'i peakorteriga KEXP, kus Eesti bändidest esinenud Duo Ruut & Puuluup.
Ning selliseid kanaleid on tegelikult palju - USAst nt veel Audiotree (tõin välja just selle, kuna seal astus yles Night Tapes)... aga fenomen on globaalne.
Olen ammu oodanud millegi sarnase tekkimist Eestis...
