[Discussion] I’m a weird watch collector who prefers quartz over mechanical...am I doing this hobby wrong?

I’ve always loved watches and I genuinely respect mechanical pieces a lot. I understand the craftsmanship, the tradition, and why people are passionate about them.

But as a collector, I find myself consistently leaning toward quartz.

Part of it is practicality - I like watches that I can just wear without thinking about servicing cycles, maintenance, or the idea that I’ll need to service them every ~5–7 years. That aspect honestly puts me off a bit.

I currently have around 7 watches in my collection, and I keep finding myself looking for interesting quartz pieces instead of mechanical ones.

When I’m trying to find really well-finished quartz watches, it sometimes feels like I’m a bit of a “quartz hunter” in a mostly mechanical world — especially once you go past the ~$1k–$3k range, where everything seems to turn heavily mechanical. Genuinely good quartz pieces from major brands feel surprisingly rare, so I often end up digging through catalogs and discontinued models just to find something that feels right.

At the same time, I sometimes wonder if I’m just overthinking it or overpaying for quartz in certain cases (like higher-end Swiss quartz vs mechanical alternatives at similar price points).

So I guess my question is - am I missing something in how I approach this hobby, or is it completely valid to prefer quartz even as a “watch enthusiast”?

Chronograph, triple calendar, moonphase. JLC perfection.

Pictures never do justice to how this dial plays with natural light. Truly the watchmaker's watch

[BN0163-00H Promaster 200] My ocean-ready diver

Picked up the Citizen BN0163-00H Promaster 200 as my go-to watch for anything around the water.

Been using it for sea, beach trips, and general summer wear. The grey/gold dial gives it a nice change from the usual black divers, but it still feels like a proper tool watch.

Simple, reliable, and easy to wear in and out of the water — exactly what I wanted for anything “marine-related”.

That neon yellow hit DIFFERENT. Best summer daily driver, hands down.

Just wanted to share a quick appreciation post for my GBD-200-9ER. I’ve been rocking this lime/neon yellow beast for a minute now, and honestly? It completely ruined my other squares.

Here is my quick, no-BS breakdown of the experience so far:

  • The Screen is Insane: That MIP display is a total game-changer. I don't care if it's blinding midday sun or a pitch-black room—you can read this thing from across the street. Crisp AF.
  • The Fit: It sits incredibly flat on the wrist. Super lightweight, doesn't feel bulky at all compared to the classic chunky G-Shocks.
  • The Vibe: Pictures don’t do this color justice. It pops like crazy. Perfect for summer, gym sessions, or just adding some ridiculous contrast to a boring black hoodie.
  • The Tech: To be real, I don’t care much for the "smart" notification spam, I literally bought it 100% for the looks.

If you are on the fence about getting a GBD-200, especially in this loud-ass colorway - just pull the trigger. You won't regret it.

How many of you are rocking the MIP displays? What's your favorite colorway? Drop them pics below!

Quartz vs mechanical - how do you see TAG Heuer quartz today?

I’ve always been a bit torn when it comes to quartz vs mechanical watches.

On one hand, mechanical pieces get most of the attention and appreciation in the watch community. On the other hand, I think TAG Heuer is one of the few “serious” brands that still does quartz properly - not just as a cheap entry option, but as well-designed, reliable daily watches.

Here’s is mine - a blue TAG Heuer F1 quartz that I’ve worn a lot over time. Simple, reliable, and honestly just easy to live with.

Do you think TAG Heuer quartz models still deserve respect in the brand’s collection, or are they mostly overshadowed by the mechanical pieces?

New here and running into karma limits

I’m technically not completely new here, my account is about a year old, but I’ve only recently started trying to actually use Reddit properly.

Every time I try to post or join discussions, I quickly run into karma requirements and posting limits. It makes it a bit hard to get involved and understand how things work in practice.

I do understand why these rules exist, I’m just trying to figure out the best way to get started and slowly build up enough karma so I can participate normally.

Any tips for someone in this situation?
