I would like to get some perspectives from fellow autistic people on what does it mean to have a rich inner life.

The reason why I am asking this is because there is an idea amongst a lot people who come across autistic people and them along other neurodivergent people are thought of as having rich inner lives. So I would like to get some perspectives from fellow autistics on what does having rich inner lives mean to you guys? Sorry I hope I don’t make anyone uncomfortable with this question.

As an AuDHD woman, I feel so dismissed by AuDHD men whenever I share my struggles that come from having autism and ADHD as a woman.

For example, when I told them that I have experienced abuse from previous men I went out with and men who tried to take advantage of my social naïveté some AuDHD men would say things like how us autistic women have it “easier” since we can easily attract men whereas they never had experience being in relationships with women. It’s like they don’t seem to understand that even if autistic women get partners easily than AuDHD men, AuDHD women are still vulnerable to predatory men. It’s like they are more concerned about getting relationship experience more than safety and well being of women. I even had to remind them that there could potentially be even some women who could take advantage of their naïveté too and had to remind them that it’s better to not have any relationship experience at all than dealing with predatory and abusive partners.

As an autistic person, I really hate the word special ed or special needs.

I find that term to be condescending and insulting. Instead of using the word “special”, it’s simply better to use terms like additional support needs. We aren’t more “special” than neurotypical or able bodied people. I would like to get everyone else’s opinion here.

I wish I was the intellectually gifted type of autistic.

I feel like a stupid person for only having FSIQ of 113 on WAIS 5. I wish that I was the gifted type of autistic as that would’ve made more of an interesting person in terms of being able to develop esoteric interests and able to learn about these interests in a greater detail. People with gifted intellect are able to see the nuances in everything and are quick learners and I wish I wasn’t born that way. I don’t have any esoteric interests and I am so boring compared to the gifted autistics.

I hate that I come from a society where autism and other invisible disabilities aren’t understood.

For context, I am of South Asian origin and there is a lack of awareness about invisible disabilities. I was lived at my parent’s country of origin from the ages of 7-9. I was beaten up by teachers that time and my classmates because of my challenges that came from autism and other invisible disabilities like adhd, short term memory issues, and a learning disability. I was also hit on my head for not being able to memorize things and living in my own world. People will call me crazy and would complain to my parents about me and say mean things by calling me the r word for having certain difficulties in processing information. Now that I am in my late 20s, I still feel traumatized by this to this day. I wish people from my community had more awareness about disabilities that way I wouldn’t have to be so self conscious about being around them.

As an atheist ex Muslim with disabilities, I feel so devalued by some religious people when they tell me that the suffering disabilities is due to me not praying.

I have disabilities like ADHD, autism, OCD, language based learning disabilities, and short term memory issues. Dealing with these challenges increases my levels of depression and anxiety because they interfere with my ability to navigate the world around me. I act in a way that’s considered unusual by society and I had come across some aunties who would tell my mom that I am “abnormal” because my mom must have committed a sin. I had some Muslims tell me that I am having problems in life because I don’t pray to Allah. They were telling me that they will pray for me and even my mom tells me that she will pray for me so that I become “normal” and less depressed. They don’t seem to understand that my depression has nothing to do with not praying and it has more to deal with struggles that comes from my disabilities and the way society treats me and disabled people overall as inferior to people who are not disabled. When I explain that I am also depressed because of not having a job, my mom and other people tell me that if I pray five times a day and read the Quran, I will get a job and become successful. When people tell me these things, I feel so degraded by that.

To fellow autistic women, is it normal for me as a woman to prefer men who are soft, sensitive, and gentle and not muscular for relationships?

Sorry if this is a silly question but the reason why I am asking this is because I have been told that my taste in men is weird and I have been told that as an autistic woman who is vulnerable, I should look for a man who is traditionally “masculine” as in muscular, rough and tough, a “protector”, and not show emotions. I prefer men like my husband who isn’t afraid to show emotions and don’t mind if he is not afraid to cry. I don’t like when society see certain emotions as masculine or feminine. People make me feel that as an autistic woman, I need a “manly” man who can protect me since I am autistic and I tell them that I can protect myself as my autonomy is more important than making a man feel like a “man.” If anything my husband protects me in his own way. I am attracted to my husband’s chubby body and he overall is like a teddy bear to me.

As an autistic woman, I am so burnt out of everything in life so that’s why all I do is lie down in bed all day.

I feel like I am becoming less productive. I don’t feel like doing household chores, don’t feel like eating or drinking, socializing with friends and overall just don’t feel like doing even the simplest activities such as reading or painting. My energy level is very low right now and I am lacking the motivation to do anything in life.
