Boat wiring question

So I bought this console for my boat. I’d like to run my trolling motor through the voltage meter and I’ve got a separate battery for fish finder and USB. (When that runs out, my electronics just turn off. If the troller dies, I’m paddling.)

It makes sense to me to just disconnect the voltage meter and reconnect those wires to bypass it, but when I wire the trolling motor through the voltage meter do I just run the positive or do I need to also connect the negative? It’s also a larger gauge wire. Will that matter?

Thanks in advance!

Done redid the deck!

Not much to say. $500 boat and trailer. Ripped out the old rotted deck and replaced. Sealed up a couple small leaks and will test it out tomorrow night.

Fish finder

Trying to find an ok fish finder on marketplace. Noticing there are some for kayaks, some are good for larger boats, some are good for the end of your fishing pole. I’ve never had a fish finder before and wondering what I should really be looking for. I’d love a bit larger and color screen. Lots of cheap head units but most are lacking the transducer and other cords. 14’ aluminum v hull with a bow mount troller. Im building this boat on a garage sale budget.

Also, is placing the transducer on the trolling motor a good idea? I’d think the magnets and noise and movement would screw with the signal, but I see a lot of them out there.

Say what you want, I think she’s beautiful! But I’ve got questions.

Like pretty much everyone else it seems, I got a good deal on a boat. If nothing else, the trailer is worth what I paid for the whole thing. Was listed as a 12’ 1970 smoker craft. It’s 14’. He also said it didn’t leak and the trolling motor worked, but here we are.

Finished gutting the rotted deck and cleaning out all the bullshit today and realized, this boat either hit something, or was dropped on this ill fitting trailer which depressed the keel upward into the boat and split an interior piece of metal. I had it on the water to test for leaks and nothing came from this area. Couple small ones where The mid bench was flexing, but only about a cup to a cup and a half of water after an hour or so of fishing.

So, you think I can pound this out? Was thinking a well placed 2x4 and a 4lb masonry hammer might put it back in place. Whoever decked this thing last did a horrible job of it and I think getting this dent out will bring the sides in just a bit and make the benches more flush and structurally fitting to the sides.

I’ve got a tube of 3M 5200 and I plan to hit every rivet with it, but I want to ask before I potentially do anymore damage. Would you just leave it and deck it? My plan for now is to just get it on the water. Making it pretty is a job for another time.

Also, is a wire wheel safe for aluminum boats? Plan to use it to strip the paint around the rivets before I goo’em up.

Thought this might be a good place to ask some trolling motor troubleshooting questions.

Bought a boat. Seems pretty solid, just needs new deck wood (so far) but a decent boat. It came with an old bow mount Motor Guide, Whisper guide Power Plus trolling motor. Has a homemade extension cord with battery hookups on one end and a female plug on the other. Foot switch has the male end. I don’t think this is factory issued but it is what it is.

Tested by the seller with a janky power supply and then bought a brand new 24v deep cell marine battery, and both gave the same result. The shaft will rotate about 90° in both directions, but that’s it. Prop isn’t turning. I know nothing about trolling motors and would like to pick the Reddit hive brain for some trouble shooting instructions to see if I can get it running before I start tearing into it or just buy another marketplace troller.

(I apparently did not take any pictures of it to get any attention. Will update after I close up shop this evening.)

A gift for my daughter’s BF.

Daughter’s BF has no gear but asked if I wanted to take him fishing. He’s a pretty good dude so I thought I’d get him a gift.

Getting bigger into the UL setups myself I thought I’d go to walzmart and see what they had. Was surprised to find this 4.5’ rod reel combo for $22. Topped it off with a small tackle box full of rooster tails and micro worm rigs, set of fishing pliers and scissors.

How’d I do?

New in here. Thought I’d show off my new rig.

Eagle Claw 6’ Ultralite rod fitted with a Scylla 1000s 4oz carbon fiber reel with 8.8lb drag. 6lb mono with 8lb leader.

This rod was a bit longer than I like, but I couldn’t quit picking it up and wiggling it at the tackle shop. I was expecting to spend more on a rod for a bait caster that I went there looking for, but it was cheap, so my extra money bought this wet noodle. (I may name it Al Dente)

Anyway, got home and my extra reels were smoked, so I went to Amazon and picked up this fun little dude. Was advertised as a finesse and trout reel. But I’ll tell you after this last weekend, it catches little tiny bass, whitefish and largescale sucker fish all day.

If you see these yellow sticks in the store, don’t hesitate. They are a blast! Little 3-4” bass looking like you caught a tiger shark. Also an excellent and super smooth reel that worked flawlessly for 6hrs on the River.

EDIT TO ADD: last pic from my boat has my 4.5’ ugly stick. The zebco 33 micro trigger cast is just out of frame.

Buddy of mine thought he was being funny and left this on my doorstep 6years ago.

I have pissed on it no less than once a day since I got it. My dogs piss on it too.

For the fun of it!

Picked up this 6’ eagle claw (talon maybe) ultralight pole the other day. It was just too fun to resist. Thought one of my spare reels would work on it, but woah, the reels were toast. $25 more dollars and 2 days worth of waiting (seriously Amazon?) and this Scylla 1000s shows up. 4 glorious ounces of carbon fiber with an 8.8lb drag. I’ll let you all know how it works after my trial run on this weekends float.

My final conundrum, 4lb fluoro or 6lb mono? I set this thing up to make 2” sunfish look like I’m fighting jaws.

What’r you doing with it?

Abu Ambassadeur 5000. Reclaimed from a Tornado ravaged farm in Ks and relocated to the PNW. Serial dates it to late 60’s early 70’s if my memory is right. Seems to reel and the casting button seems to work just fine. Tomorrow I’m taking it in to my local rod shop to have it gone over, cleaned up and respooled.

While I’m there I may or may not have a little extra coin to marry it to a rod. So I thought I’d stop in here and ask how you guys would set it up? What kind of rod and what type and weight line works best for these?

In the PNW I fish a lot of lakes and rivers for trout and steelhead, some bass all the way down to sunfish if they’re nibbling. Occasionally I try my hand at the salmon and even more rarely I hit the saltwater. I am however hearing tale of catfishing being existent but not a thing people do here. I luuuv catfishing and I’ve read that these reels excel at landing some fattys.

I’ve never used a casting reel like this and it seems like it may take me a lesson or 2 to figure out tension and backlash. Seems like some have a lot of fancy thumb action with this type of reel as well. Any special tips or tricks I should practice? Am I gonna get line burn on my thumb? lol?! I wanna know!

Thanks in advance.

No pics or anything for attention but do you guys regularly use rooster tails?

So, unless I’m targeting a specific fish all I use are rooster tails. Mepps honestly don’t work as well for me and I’m not sure the difference. I live in the PNW and will catch so many trout with a rooster tail that I don’t even have time to open a beer. I’ve caught bass, sunfish, a pike minnow, a few triploid, whatever. Same when I lived back in Missouri. I might add a small power bait to the hook if the day happens to be slow, but I’ve had cutthroats and rainbows hit PB on a bare hook.

Also, is it normal to put them on a swivel? Sometimes I like to switch up the colors a few times to see what’s hitting, and eventually got tired of spending the day tying knots or debating if it was worth the effort. (I’m a lazy fisherman, don’t judge) on the shoreline I feel like I have to drag a bit quicker to get the spoon action going so I adjust my crank speed accordingly, but sometimes when it gets to the boat it’s just not spinning. I’m sure the swivel is the issue 100% but what’s a good way to rig these so I can change them out a bit quicker while also creating the action that attracts the fish?

New Hat Day!

Got my brand new 7 5/8 Stetson Bishop Milan in Cognac from McKinney Hat Co. today! This is an excellent pork pie y’all! A very nice rigid, yet comfort flexing straw. I usually wear a shorter crown and brim but was looking for something a little shadier this season. It fits perfectly and looks great! It has a leather sweatband which is questionable but I do hope it keeps me from bleaching the hat with sweat like I did to my Bailey and its cloth sweatband.

So, anybody know what this little silicone pocket is that came with the hat? It has a peel off back with adhesive so I can stick it to something. Never seen it before but being a Stetson, I’m sure it’s something unnecessarily fancy.

Yo, what the fuck is up with “zero proof” fucking alcohol? Like, who the fuck was like “you know what bro, I don’t want to get fucked up, but I do want to drink a disgusting liquid that burns my fucking throat.” What kind of dumb fucking idiocracy timeline are we fucking in any fucking way? Can you fucking imagine getting busted running a fucking still for zero proof fucking white lightning?

Where can a guy find a nice hat around here?

Seriously, the only hat shop I’ve found is all the way over at Pike’s Place and the men’s department is minimal. I don’t want baseball caps. Where can I get a good straw or felt fedora? Preferably of the pork pie variety. Cowboy hats have appeal as well. Tired of wondering if the ones on Amazon will fit or feel right and hat shopping is fun af!

ABU Ambassadeur 5000

Saw another one of these posted in here and thought I’d see if anyone had any knowledge to spit at me about this reel.

Wife’s farm got hit by a tornado and we had to go back and salvage what we could of the wreckage. Found this reel in an old piece of furniture. Wife seems to think it was her grandfathers but said I could have it. AI says it’s dated 1958/59 according to the serial number. It spins decent for the rats nest of line that it has on it. Thinking about taking it to the local gear supplier and seeing if they can do a professional cleaning, re lining, and maybe match up a pole to it. If y’all might have a recommendation for a good pole to match it with that’d be cool.

What have I got?

Looking for wildflower identification. If this is the wrong place I apologize. The first little white/purple colored flowers have absolutely exploded on my property this year. Never seen them before. The second yellow flower makes its home in the gravel around my shop amongst the horsetail and blackberries. I’m in the Wa part of the PNW.
