Thinking of replacing my 2014 BMW 118i with an EV — sensible or dumb?
Currently considering switching to an EV and wanted some opinions on whether it makes financial/practical sense for my situation.
Current car:
\- BMW 118i (2014)
\- \~64k miles
\- Probably worth around £8k privately
\- Currently reliable, but I’m conscious that older German cars can start getting expensive once bigger maintenance items start appearing
My driving:
\- Around 10k miles a year
\- Commute twice a week: 100 mile round trip each day
\- Parents live in Wales about 280 miles away, but I only go every 3-4 months and don’t mind stopping once to charge
Other context:
\- I have home charging available
\- Good credit score
\- Considering using around £7k via 0% money transfer / balance transfer credit card offers on top of selling my current car
\- I can technically pay cash instead, but I’m exploring the 0% route because I’m disciplined with credit cards and the fuel savings should offset a decent chunk of the cost
I’m basically trying to work out whether:
\- Switching to an EV is financially sensible vs keeping the BMW
\- My mileage/use case suits EV ownership
\- Avoiding future BMW maintenance bills is a reasonable justification
\- Using 0% credit card borrowing for part of the purchase is sensible or financially stupid
Would appreciate honest opinions, especially from people who’ve made a similar switch.
Also open to used EV recommendations around the £14-15k range.
