I want to be a children’s book illustrator. How can I improve to build my portfolio?

i’m really nervous about building a portfolio for school to become a children’s book illustrator.
is there any way i can improve? i feel like my characters are too static and my art is just average.
i’m completely okay with harsh critique here, go all in because i need it. thank you so much

Is Having a Macbook Required?

This is an excerpt from my intro to graphic design class on requirements and expectations for the class. Is a Macbook Pro required for graphic design? I can’t afford something like this and I’m kind of freaking out. Thank you so much

Is This Asthma?

Hi. My cat is a domestic shorthair, 6 years old, and about 10 pounds. I live in the southern US.
Yesterday morning I was half asleep and my cat Hope was by my head grooming herself. She suddenly hunched her neck forward and started making this wheezing/hacking sound. Almost like a hairball but different? It lasted maybe 15-20 seconds.
She’s had one of these episodes once before, but I was not able to get it on video. I was just barely able to get this one on video as well, only the last second. Sorry about that.

Also, her eye is a little goopy, in the summer they tend to get like this, I just hadn’t cleaned them yet as I was waking up. Her eyes are fine!
I can 100% go to a vet and can afford it, I just wanted some opinions here. Thank you!

I know next to nothing about graphic design, how are the classes?

Hi everyone! I’m a digital artist and graphic design major, and I’m going to be taking intro classes in graphic design this year at my college.

I know absolutely nothing about graphic design and I’m really nervous about being completely lost once I begin. Should I be reading up on things/studying before I get there? Can anyone here tell me their experiences with intro classes and if they’re fast paced? Thank you so much!

Here’s some of my work on my commissions page.

Do my designs give off the characters intended traits?

i’m worried that you can’t tell what my characters personalities are like when getting a first look at them. that’s super important to me, so i’m wondering if you can get their vibes from just looks alone
tysm!!!
