Retaining a 200 to 400 mm drop under an existing Colorbond fence: dry-stack block wall plan

G'day everyone,

Looking for a sanity check on a plan to retain a boundary drop beneath an existing Colorbond fence.

The Situation

  • The neighbour's yard sits 200 to 400 mm higher than ours across a 20-metre boundary.
  • The previous owner's temporary fix of loose bricks, timber offcuts, and reed screening is finally giving up.
  • I need a clean, permanent solution with proper drainage that will not put lateral load on the fence posts. (Photos attached: current state)

The Plan: Freestanding Dry-Stack Wall Rather than bolting plinths or sleepers to the fence posts, I am planning an independent, low dry-stack block wall (looking at Brighton Eziwall, Hudson Stone, or similar) sitting just on our side of the boundary.

  • Trench and base. Dig down 120 to 150 mm, lay 75 to 100 mm of road base, and compact it thoroughly.
  • Base course. Bury roughly half of the first block below finished ground level to prevent kick-out.
  • Height and stepped run. Stack 3 to 4 courses (300 to 400 mm total), stepped along the natural fall. Glue the cap/top course down with landscape adhesive (Sikabond or similar).
  • Fence gap. Maintain a 15 to 20 mm gap under the bottom Colorbond rail to prevent rust from trapped moisture.
  • Drainage. 65 mm socked ag-pipe behind the first course, surrounded by 20 mm blue metal wrapped in geotextile fabric, draining to a lower point in the yard.

Questions

  • Trench prep. For a 3 to 4 course wall at this height, is well-compacted road base enough, or is a concrete footing worth the extra effort on a mild slope?
  • Alternative setups. Has anyone tackled a similar drop with a modular system they preferred over dry-stack blocks?
  • Drainage details. Any practical tips for keeping the backfill free of silt over time without creating an awkward channel behind the fence?

Keen to hear your thoughts or spot any glaring mistakes before I order materials.

Cheers!

Updates to my Paper Tokens Generator

Hi everyone!

I have restyled my Paper Tokens Generator with a fresh new UI (complete with dark/light mode), and added a couple of nice features:

  • Zoom and pan -> You can now adjust the tokens to look exactly how you want.
  • Download functionality -> Easily save your tokens locally.
  • Localisation -> The tool is now available in both English and Italian.
  • Local uploads -> You can now upload images directly from your PC.

If you aren't familiar with the Paper Tokens Generator, I originally built it back in 2018 because I needed a tool to generate tokens and paper minis in bulk using image URLs.

The PTG generates:

  • Tokens -> Supports standard inch sizes (round or square).
  • Paper minis ->Perfect for physical tabletop maps.
  • Monster tents ->Great for the DM screen, with space to write notes after printing.

The tool is 100% free with no sign up required; you just need to paste your image links or upload files, tweak the options, print, and cut.

I'm going for it...

I've always known about the PoE games, since the dawn of time. But haven't picked them up yet. Recently I've finished Avowed, and that sparked the desire to play PoE games.

I love RPGs, and I'm a big TTRPG player. The Baldur's Gate series is one of my favourite videogames (to give you an idea).

So I've started with Pillars of Eternity. I'm a couple of hours in, and managed to find the Prima guide on a good price on eBay.

Any do's and don'ts you can suggest on top of your heads?

Finished my first run: just wow!

I have just finished Avowed in a nice and cosy story mode playthrough, and I am absolutely blown away! I managed to complete all the quests without rushing at all, clocking in just over 40 hours of pure enjoyment.

To be completely honest, I hadn't played any other game in this franchise before diving in, and I'd heard a few mixed reviews online. But wow, am I glad I ignored the noise. This game completely captivated me from start to finish!

The exploration factor is top tier, the combat and weapons feel fantastic, the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful, and the lore and stories are incredible. Everything just ties together so perfectly.

I usually struggle to stay invested in massive RPGs of this calibre and often end up dropping them after a while. However, the fantastic mechanics and the beautifully straightforward quest design meant I never felt overwhelmed, making it perfect even for a non completionist. It has easily jumped into my top tier of favourite video games of the last few years.

I am officially hooked, and I am soooo looking forward to Avowed 2! If you've been on the fence about picking this up, consider this your sign to jump in!

As a non-completionist, Avowed has given me a feeling that most other games struggle to deliver.

Ok, this is my first run of Avowed and I can only say good things about the game. I have not played any other game in the franchise, though they are on my list, but so far I am having such a great time exploring and interacting with the various NPCs.

I think what I have appreciated most of all so far is the fact that I completed Dawnshore, finishing all the quests (but one that I guess will be completed in the next areas...and the main quest of course). Now, I don't know if this was a coincidence or a well-planned game design strategy, as I am no completionist at all' I just enjoy the ride.

But this left an amazing sense of completeness that I usually struggle to find in other games. So far, it is one of the best games I have played in recent years.

My dream cast for Preston & Child's "The Cabinet of Curiosities"

Hi everyone,

I've recently dived into the Pendergast series by Preston & Child, or more accurately, I've started listening to the audiobooks (I know, I'm fashionably late to the party!).

I am absolutely hooked. It's the kind of book series that begs for a screen adaptation: the ultimate blend of horror, thriller, gore, and mystery. It has a wonderfully Cthulhu-esque vibe, if you know what I mean.

Right now, I'm listening to The Cabinet of Curiosities, and it is incredible. Without spoiling anything, let's just say it draws heavy inspiration from Jack the Ripper!

Like many of you, I always cast the characters in my head as I read. Here is the dream cast I've envisioned for The Cabinet of Curiosities. I won't go into too much detail to keep it spoiler-free, but I'd love to hear your thoughts if you've read it or are planning to!

  • Pendergast: Matthew Modine
  • Dr. Nora Kelly: Rebecca Ferguson
  • Bill Smithback: Jesse Plemons
  • Officer Patrick Murphy O'Shaughnessy: David Harbour
  • Roger Brisbane: Walton Goggins
  • Dr. Frederick Watson Collopy: Jared Harris
  • Anthony Fairhaven: Guy Pearce
  • Enoch Leng: Mads Mikkelsen

Enjoy!

I updated my free Paper Token & Mini Generator with a new UI, Dark Mode, and Italian language support!

Hey everyone,

Given the state of the internet, I guess I need to clarify right off the bat: this is an actual web app built with real code, not a prompt-engineered AI wrapper. There's no generative AI, no data harvesting, and no scraped art here, just a tool I hand-coded to solve a common GM problem.

Some of you might remember an old utility I built back in 2018 under a different URL. I finally got around to giving it a massive overhaul, a fresh UI, and a dedicated home at https://rpgtokens.com.

I wanted to make a tool that takes seconds to use during prep. You just paste your images' URLs, use the mouse wheel to pan and zoom the crop, and it instantly formats printable A4 sheets.

I built it with three specific physical layouts:

  • Round/squared tokens for basic mapping.
  • Folding monster initiative tents to hang over your DM screen.
  • Paper minis if you want cheap minis.

If you play online, you can also just hit export to download high-res, transparent PNGs styled for Roll20, Foundry, or Owlbear Rodeo. It's also got Gothic/Parchment themes and full English and Italian localisation.

It requires no accounts, no sign-ins, and has zero paywalls. I built it for the community because running games is expensive enough as it is.

Check it out if you need a quick token solution for your next session. If you encounter any bugs (the human-made kind), let me know so I can fix them!
