is HDHP just getting employees to self-insure

Low premium , high deductible and then sharing the insurance pain in effect making the employee self-insure a percentage of the risk . The HSA account just helps the employee fund it. The downside is unforeseen health costs that. If this is good for the employee its because the employee doesn't intend to get sick and in that case not having insurance would be even better. Been arguing this point with a friend

The goal of HDHP's is to push more costs of health care onto consumers and away from companies.

Appliance nightmare in NYC

I had to replace two appliances almost at once.

First a washing machine which required wiring in a new electric line and getting NYC DOB inspection, only DOB refused to assign a date for the first 30 days and then assigned one a full 30 days further out. When the date came DOB was a no show without advising, then midway through the following day the inspection was marked done without ever showing up.

Follow that with a dishwasher from roughly 15 years ago that based on then code was wired directly into the electricity. On the day of installation the crew said where's the outlet for the plug and threatened to leave the unit uninstalled with my water turned off. Took quick thinking and good fortune that I was able to have an outlet installed that same day.

I don't hear many of these stories

Retrogenesis and Executive Motor Control and planning(walking issues)

My mom is declining at a faster rate it seems to me. I saw her on video having trouble executing and planning the steps needed to get to her bed and back. her gait was slower than typical and she was shuffling more than her normal self. what's more she reverted to walking sideways with the walker. Made me think of how a baby first learns to walk . she's learning in reverse

drivers license

Application for renewal came. I assume i can ignore it. Clearly with advanced Alzheimer's she's not driving. I'm assuming any needs for ID at this stage are minimal and can handled via my POA

Difficulty getting them to eat

An issue that's been coming up that I now saw first hand is the difficulty in getting my mom to eat a complete meal. She can still engge in the physical act but she lacks the attention span. She'll take a few bites , gets distracted and get up and attempt to walk away. We remind her to eat but that reinforcement for her failing executive function.
works less and less.

I'm against forced feeding and frankly the situation doesn't call for it. I also don't want to do appetite stimulants. For now I'm suggesting to the aid that if she eats 75% of a meal consider that success. I'm also suggesting we experiment with breaking up the meal so that we make lunch a two session thing.

Alzheimer's appears to be accelerating

We've already been at stage 7 for about a year so the change from that time is like night and day but lately it feels like the decline is getting even faster. Mom has lost all executive function, is down to perhaps just five words a day and engages in rocking and other self soothing motions in bed and frequently undresses or tosses her blanket over the sides. She has no idea why she does anything and has started to become very hunched. Her appetite is beginning to reduce as well, she often won't finish lunch.

Is this typical with late stage 7?

Help me understand Wax ring failure

First failure happened after 19 years but second happened less than five years later? Do I need to dig further to see if there's another factor such as the toilet rocks or the toilet doesn't mount flush , building shifts or something else?

Anyone have recent experience requesting an electricical inspection with DOB NOW?

i had minor electrical work done a month ago and still waiting for the DOB to assign an inspector. The actual inspection is estimated to need less than 30 minutes. I also understand DOB did a recent system migration

what's the most distressing aspect of Alzheimers for you?

For me its my mom's newest stage. For me its what I'm seeing now, the utter restlessness and what might be restlessness combined with the total loss of executive function. This means the moment you put her to sleep she bangs on the rails and her legs rock up and down. It also means she'll be eating and will lose focus and go off to take clothes out of the closet with food hanging out of her mouth

Anyone using Quetepiane?

We tried something else and it was completely ineffective. Mom grows incredibly restless as the day progresses and has started calling out for her mom and dad. It's sad to see. She can't sit still for one minute. Gets really bad later in the day. Hoping this helps. . She's late stage.

Is Fairway phasing out the Fairway brand products

A decade ago it was the pasta sauce, within the past year it was the balsamic vinegar and now I went shopping and in place of their generic EVOO label it was an outside brand , and at a higher price. It's as if the new owners arent' able to maintain the old supply lines the previous owners had in place so one by one they are disappearing.

anyone notice increased agitation and restlessness during late stage alzeimers?

This is new for us. She gets up walks and comes back and will do so repeatedly. If we ask her where she's going she says she doesn't know. The other day she wanted to find her father, another day she attempted to descend the stairs because she wanted to go to the bank. she's asked to leave the house to get to her house. She knows where she lives but even though she's in her home its not familiar to her. Seems like a new phase

Loss of ability to identify self and relatives in a photo album

Mom is advanced 7-c,7-d alzheimers. Last month I showed her an album from the late 70's and she correctly identified herself and close family members but yesterday just a month later my brother did the same and she couldn't recognize anyone and even identified a photo of herself as that of my dad.

Will buying a front load speed queen cause any issues?

I'm really curious about this. This is my dilemma. I live in a condo and the sponsor unit is failing after 24 years(a maytag) and it was top load. Because of space constraints and a desire to stay with a vented unit with similar or better washer and dryer space I'm not seeing a lot of options out there except Speedqueen.

Reviews are pretty good but I've never not had a top load. I read that a front load is gentler on clothes but that you need to never close the doors when not in use to prevent mold and you can't open them once the cycle starts. Anyone regret going front load? Speedqueen seems to have a good reputation but no one seems to buy them at least in my building. I'm hoping its because they cost more and arent' a huge force in residential.

blender or food processor for alzheimer's dysphagia

As many of you know Alzheimer's doesn't follow the FAST scale literally and some abilities are lost earlier and others later. My mom developed difficulty chewing and swallowing later in the disease. What's a better solution , a blender or a food processor?

why does everyone push Hospice?

I'm not categorically against it, but after looking into it I don't see it as an instant panacea. Aides are limited to 5 hours per week and unless you're administering a comfort kit I'm not sure what the team provides other than a hospital bed.

For me I bought a hospital bed through Medicare and upgraded it and hired a concierge geriatric doctor. I plan to hire a second aid in the coming weeks / months.

In doing my research I see that hospice was really built around cancer and that heritage shows up in how they approach Alzheimers.

Have you withheld antiobiotics at end of life?

This has long been my plan at the appropriate time. Mom is advanced stage 7 and has a possible UTI. It's impossible to know as a getting a urine sample is next to impossible. She's really declined a lot in the past few months so this is a very different decision than a year ago when we did opt to treat. I have no qualms about this decision but it is weighty. she's peeing and pooping in a diaper , beginning to have difficulty getting out of bed and sitting straight and i'm seeing more evidence of dysphagia things I do not want to see her suffer from
