[Question] Considering Poco X8 Pro Max... but HyperOS?

I'm thinking about purchasing a Poco X8 Pro Max, but coming from OnePlus and LineageOS, and I'm a bit worried about HyperOS. Main concerns are bloating and possibly privacy (although, I'm not too fussy about the latter).

Anything you'd like to share with me before I bite the bullet and get the phone? Thank you!

Xiaomi vs Google vs Samsung

Do you have any opinion about these options? Perhaps you own one of these.

Xiaomi Poco X8 Pro Mac 512GB/12GB (€479)
Google Pixel 10a 128GB/8GB (€499)
Samsung Galaxy A57 512GB/12GB (€485)

I did some research already, and on paper it seems like you get good value from the Xiaomi. But then you have a Chinese HyperOS with 4 major updates, as opposed to 6 and 7 from the others.

About the Google Pixel 10a, it seems like they are economising on the chipset/storage/memory, but then you get 7 major updates and a non-Chinese managed OS.

With the Samsung, you also get a bloated OS, like Xiaomi, but you get good specs... other than the chipset which seems to be the inferior one among the 3.

I was also considering the Nothing 4a, but for €449, and you only get 3 major updates. And I'm not someone who changes the phone often. I've had a OnePlus 5 for the last 10 years.

Can I buy from Malta?

What options do I have if I want to buy a Fairphone and ship to Malta.

I'd really like to support Eureopean, but why is it so difficult to buy? I can purchase a Chinese phone right now and have it delivered tomorrow morning.

Water for Espresso (must find an alternative)

Yet another water related post I guess :)

I've been using Volvic bottled water since probably the last 2 years, and I've seen improvement over the previously used local bottled water.

Volvic last checked:

  • Calcium: 13ppm
  • Magnesium: 9ppm
  • Sodium: 12ppm
  • Bicarbonates: 80ppm
  • Potassium: 7ppm

The problem is that it doesn't seem like it's being imported anymore, so I have to find an alternative.

I read about using distilled water and then mineralise it myself. However the distilled water I'm finding seems to be marketed for radiators/batteries 😄 and it's putting me off. Is there different types of distilled water, or are these the same thing (i.e. water with 0 minerals)?

What else do I need to mix with it? Is it baking soda and epsom salts?

Looking for an office lunch bag [men]

As the title says, looking for a sturdy lunch bag, to be mostly use to carry lunch to the office / work (or any other errands really). Before heading to Amazon or Temu, any known good European brands?

Website crashing Vivaldi and sometimes the PC

Can someone check if etniabarcelona.[com] works fine? I don't currently have another browser to test on, however it consumes a lot of resources, most of the time I manage to close the window, one time it crashed the PC completely. I am not sure if it's a Vivaldi desktop issue, or my issue. Tested on Vivaldi Android and it works fine.

Appreciate you in advance.

PS. this is not a sponsored post or anything, it genuinely doesn't work for me, and I've been having issues with Facebook and Linkedin lately as well (since v8).

Network Mounts: Dolphin vs fstab vs systemd

I've been using Dolphin for network mounts. To be honest, I never had any issues. But I was wondering if there are any dis/advantages over using fstab or systemd? What are you guys using?

How are you managing EC2s for ECS clusters?

I am currently using 2 variations, both manual EC2 provisioning and also using a Capacity Provider with an ASG.

In my case, both work well, and can't really pinpoint many pros and cons of each (other than the auto scaling aspect of course, which is not that beneficial unless the hosted services support auto scaling themselves, IMO). Perhaps maintenance is a little bit easier when using an ASG, since you can easily scale down and up while changing AMI, etc...?

What are you thoughts and experiences about this?

2nd CachyOS system - possible to have some sort of "sync"?

I've switched my personal desktop to CachyOS a couple of months ago, and now would like to install on a laptop as well. Is any of you performing any sort of sync between two or more systems, to avoid having to re-configure twice or more? I'm referring to, possibly, conf files or something like this. Unsure if it's even possible 😄

Thanks!

ECS and Load Balancing

Hello fellow colleagues.

First time configuring Load Balancing in an ECS service. Before I used to manually register targets to a Target Group and add it to a Load Balancer rule.

However I've been experiencing random issues ever since, especially when restarting/re-deploying such services. The targets appear healthy at first, but then the load balancer starts draining them, even though they appear to be healthy. It can repeat a couple of time until either it settles on its own, or I manually de-register and register the targets manually. Then it stays healthy.

I wonder if anyone experienced this before, or is more experienced on this than I am who can hint about what's going on?

Thanks.

EDIT: amazed by all the helpful responses, thanks a bunch!!

Is it just Roborock, or an issue with other brands too? It messes up the map almost every time I use it. A corridor that's x amount of meters ends up stretched, and I also make sure that the doors are open every time I run it and that all the stuff is in the same place. Still manages to mess up the maps. So annoying!

Any tips, or shall I just get a cleaning robot from another brand?

EDIT: Roborock S5 Max
