Love it already

Just went for my first run with my new Instinct 3 Solar 45mm (and first Garmin watch ever). Coming from an Apple Watch Series 6 Nike.

Wow what an upgrade. Love this thing so much already. Happy I was able to get 6 years out of my Apple Watch, but also cant believe I’ve been making myself suffer for so long.

Natasha Cloud Suspension

After the WNBA’s statement the other day, I expect them to come down with the most severe consequences for Natasha Cloud’s disgusting display of hatred against the bald community after she was called for a technical foul. To do that toward a marginalized group (of which I admit I am a member due to having alopecia) is absolutely reprehensible. I hope the league sets an example with this disgusting behavior.

Instinct 4/Instinct 3 Pro?

Anyone have any idea when the next model will be announced/released?

I’ve had my Apple Watch Series 6 for 6 years now and it’s starting to show signs of its age. I’m tempted to pick up an Instinct 3 one of these days, but also could probably hold out for a little while longer if it would mean getting a brand new version of the Instinct, presumably with additional features such as maps and the newer HR sensor.

Just curious if anyone has any insider info or otherwise has a good hunch based on previous release history and whatnot. Thanks!

Annual Parking Pass

Any other incoming graduate students getting an error when trying to purchase an annual parking pass? Or has anyone successfully purchased one?

Instinct 3 for a Runner

Hi all, it’s nearing the time for me to pick up my next watch. I’m a runner and am primarily interested in a watch that will accurately track my health and fitness data.

The Instinct 3 is a watch I find very compelling, specifically the solar edition with its insane battery life. I also love the built-in LED flashlight, which is lacking on a lot of other Garmin models around the Instinct’s price point. I’m not overly interested in smartwatch features, and I also don’t care about the lack of maps since I always take my phone with me when running or hiking anyway.

I’m curious why this watch rarely comes up as a running companion compared to the Forerunner series. I know it also has the previous generation heart rate sensor, but from what I’ve seen, the difference between the two is marginal.

Any other reasons that this wouldn’t make for an excellent running watch, or any reasons I should more seriously consider the Forerunner series?

Thanks!

Okta on /e/OS?

I’m thinking about getting a Fairphone and using /e/OS, but the university where I’m doing my PhD in the US uses Okta for authentication. Will I have any issues with the app on /e/OS? Thanks!

Fairphone in the USA

I am in the market for my next phone after owning my iPhone 13 Pro for nearly 6 years. I’m HIGHLY interested in the Fairphone and have been admiring the company and community for quite a while now. While I would love to pick up a Fairphone, I’m also very hesitant to do so since it seems it still has a long way to go before it’s a truly seamless transition for an American user.

I understand that T-Mobile would likely have to be my provider (I’ve been using Verizon for years), but aside from that, I’m still struggling to understand the full details of what it’s like to get started on Fairphone in the US and then what the experience is like thereafter.

Basically I am asking for two things here:

  1. Convince me that getting a Fairphone right now would not be a major hassle. I am starting a PhD program next month, so if I’m going to do this, I can’t afford for it to take much of my time and energy just to get it set up and then use it. Or, if you have experience with this and feel it would be best for me to go with something else, let me know why please.

  2. Assuming I go ahead with this plan (or for anyone else viewing this in the US who wants to do so), give a sort of beginner’s guide of steps to get Fairphone working in the US. In doing so, try to make it as beginner-friendly as possible. I and many others are not coders/developers - we just want an ethical phone that respects our privacy and is repairable.

I’m really at a crossroads here as I know that my next phone will last 5+ years, which is why I’m really trying to be thorough in making this decision. Making the jump from Apple to Android isn’t sitting well with me because it still doesn’t appease my concerns with unethical manufacturing, lack of repairability, lack of privacy, AI integration, etc.

I know that what I’m asking about here has been discussed in the past, but it seems things are changing regularly with Fairphone, and I’d like a July 2026 version of where Fairphone in the USA stands as I consider my options.

Thanks in advance!

Is there a world where this gets me through a Pure Math PhD?

In my area of research, I would not be using any math software heavily. The vast majority of my use case would be working in a browser writing LaTeX in Overleaf, corresponding over email/Google Meet, downloading and reading research papers, etc. It seems it's not totally out of the question that this machine would actually get me through a 5-year program of that.

I'm also thinking of just picking this up so I have something in hand now in case the preorder situation with my 13 Pro (Batch 15) gets even worse and is eventually just failed to be delivered. This would also allow me to get Linux on board immediately to familiarize myself with it (I have very little experience with it).

Possibly a very stupid idea, but this is where we are now.

Thanks for standing by this, Nirav. 😑

$830 upgrade promo timeline

EDIT: make that $1000 off if I pick up a Pixel 10 Pro like I’m considering. Now the question becomes — do any Verizon employees know what promos will be available upon release of the Pixel 11 Pro next month?

ORIGINAL POST: Found out today that my family and I each have $830 off a phone upgrade. The app confirms it and will apply it to all phones I’m considering.

I’m really excited about this and starting to do research. Leaning toward leaving iPhone and getting a Pixel. I know Pixel 11 is coming in a few weeks. Does anyone know how long promos like this typically last? Is it risky for me to try to wait a few weeks and preorder the new model?

Thanks!

Parking Questions

Hey ya'll, I'm an incoming grad student and trying to figure out the parking situation as I plan to live off campus some distance away that won't necessarily have public transport available. It looks like the window to purchase a pass opens on July 31, so I want to figure a couple of things out ahead of time:

  1. When you purchase a parking pass, is it for a particular/lot garage or can you just park in any of the designated annual pass lots?

  2. Assuming the answer to Question 1 is the latter, do certain lots tend to fill up quickly? In particular, I'll mainly be around the Stevenson Center, so Zones 5, 6, 7, and 18 would be very convenient unless they're basically always full and not worth the hassle.

Thanks in advance!
