I’m confused about the investments feature

If I go to the accounts tab, and then slide over to investments, it correctly tracks my investments. But if I choose the menu (top left corner) and then choose investments it doesn’t track anything… what am I missing here?

Traditional vs Roth 401k across state lines

We are setting up my wife’s 401k and deciding between a traditional or Roth. She works in Oregon, but we live and will retire in Washington state where there is no state income taxes. We know the regular advice is to favor Roth accounts, but does this advice change when we would pay Oregon 9% tax if we contributed to Roth? vs paying no state tax on a traditional 401k?

Pergo ember coast

My wife and I really loved this flooring sample we tried out of Pergo extreme ultra - ember coast - 3” Acadia. It’s a narrow plank LVT that classic oak floor look. But it’s hard to tell how it would look in an entire room based on the little sample we tried. Has anyone installed this and willing to share photos of your floor?

Spousal IRA across state lines

We recently heard about spousal IRA and think it might work in our situation. My wife works in Oregon and has to pay Oregon tax, but I don’t. We are trying to figure out if she can contribute both our IRA’s from her income thereby avoiding Oregon tax.

Rollover trad 401k to avoid state tax

I work in Oregon and live in Washington. Oregon has a 9% income tax, Washington has no income tax, only sales tax. If I contribute pre-tax to a traditional 401k and then immediately rollover to a Roth IRA, can I avoid Oregon state tax?

New construction vs remodel windows

We need to replace old aluminum windows on our house, but the lap siding runs right up to the window frame. We have heard that new construction window frames are better than remodel ones because they have the integrated flange, and we may have a few of the old window frames leaking. Is it possible to have the siding cut back for new construction windows and have the gap filled with trim like I see new construction houses built, so we can use new construction windows instead of the remodel ones? Or is this a not a good idea?

Should I replace old copper with pex while I have the walls and floor opened up?

I am currently in the process of renovating a few rooms in my house. I will have enough walls and subfloors removed that I can access all the plumbing if I want to replace it. The plumbing is 40 year old copper and I haven’t had any problems with it yet. But most of this plumbing is sandwiched between an upstairs and downstairs, so if I don’t do it now, it will be trapped in there for another few decades. Should I take advantage of the open walls and floors now to replace the copper with pex?

Red oak upstairs. white oak downstairs. Will it clash?

We had #2 red oak installed in the upstairs of our house a few years ago. It is stained with a dark walnut stain. I think it looks great for the hallway and bedrooms upstairs, but now we are choosing what flooring to put downstairs and want something lighter for our downstairs. The downstairs is the main living area, kitchen, living room, dining room.

We also have been liking the look of white oak vs red oak, but we are afraid the 2 different species of wood might clash. Do you think stairs would be a big enough separation that the 2 different flooring types won’t clash?

putting my table saw into storage

I have a large Harvey table saw and router combo that I don't want to get rid of while selling my house, so it needs to go into a storage unit for a while. The storage unit won't be climate controlled so I expect temperature and humidity swings in there. What can I do to protect the saw, cast iron tops, and everything else?

Best way to frame walls for soundproofing?

I’m getting ready to build a large shed for woodworking and such. Some of these tools are rather loud, so I’d like to be a good neighbor and make it as soundproof as possible to be a considerate neighbor. What would be the best method in framing or otherwise to make soundproof walls and ceiling?

I’m looking to build a shed soon as big as I can legally without a permit. It is for woodworking mostly, so I would like to build a double exterior wall for soundproofing so that it doesn’t disturb the neighbors. I researched it on Portland’s official website and it states it can be up to 200 sq ft measured from the INTERIOR of the exterior walls. I would expect it to say measured from the exterior, but it says interior. It sounds like that gives me unlimited freedom to make the exterior walls as thick as possible. Is this really the rule?
