The XS Max is still awesome

I recently downgraded to the XS Max, and it is still super viable. It runs surprisingly fast on iOS 18, the camera is still great (and arguably better than certain modern iPhones). Plus, it is one of the most beautiful phones ever made.

Downgrading from iPhone 14 to XS Max

I currently (and have used since launch) an iPhone 14 base model. It is a great phone. I have never updated it, and it is still running the original iOS 16.
It runs as fast as the day I got it. I do not want to update it as I am worried it will then start to become slow/unresponsive, and that it will not last as long (power wise). It is probably rare to see an iOS 16 iPhone 14, and I just do not want to update it.
Thave been experiencing apps starting to cut support for iOS 16, and do want something with better compatibility. I looked into it and found a well priced iPhone XS Max gold (best looking iPhone ever) near me with a 100% health replacement battery. Are these still good phones? How is the experience on iOS 18?

Ram management worse on different devices

I have a surface pro 5, running 26.04, and for some reason the 4gb on it feels extremely limited, way more so than my other 4gb MacBook Pro that is also on 26.04. When running the same desktop with the same VPN and nothing open, the surface can use 10-15% more ram idle. I understand that 4gb is extremely low and technically below Ubuntu standard specs, but with the MacBook Pro it is comfortably usable for web browsing, watching videos, office work etc, and seems like it also manages ram and swap better. With the surface pro, four Librewolf tabs, discord and a RenPy game open is enough to cause a temporary freeze, but the MacBook can do it fine.

Are Precision 5510s Quality?

How are the build materials? Does it have a decent hinge? How does it compare to MacBooks of the same time?

Recommendations for a high end 1080p monitor?

Is there any 1080p monitors that are:
-Glass screened
-great color accuracy (IPS is okay)
-slightly smaller (18-25 inch)
-preferably 100+ hz refresh rate.
It’s okay if not all of my wants are hit, but something close.

I really like the backgrounds on 26.04, but felt they were lacking some orange.

If anyone wants them I can set up some download links.

Why are most ARM devices so restrictive?

While the modern ARM revolution is great, most devices that are ARM seem so restrictive. MacBooks (especially post M2) basically do not let you boot your own OS or delete MacOS fully. Phones and tablets are quite restrictive (save for select options that do prioritize user choice), and as far as i know modern Microsoft surface snapdragon devices are hard to boot Linux on. I personally have been holding onto older devices and avoiding arm laptops because of the freedom that x86 seems to offer.

Ubuntu 20.04 not showing after install

I am experiencing this strange issue with Ubuntu 20.04 where after I install it to a device, it will properly boot into the fresh install after, and continue to boot properly when restarted, but stops working after boot order is changed as it doesn’t show up as a boot option on MacBook boot options or on Windows laptops in UEFI. I’m mostly installing on MacBook Pros, and modern Ubuntu does not have this issue, but 20.04 does, and it persists on Windows laptops too. I experienced ä similar issue in the past where Ubuntu 14.04 would not show up at all or boot after installing. Are the ISOs canonical puts out for legacy versions broken?

Is it weird to choose a distro based off branding?

Ive found myself using Ubuntu more and more over other distros these days, not because it does anything special that I really prefer over Debian or Fedora, no, its because I really like ubuntu's stock backgrounds and color scheme.

Is there any program/way to completely disable Nvidia gpus on laptops?

I have multiple old MacBook Pros that have Nvidia GPUs in them, they work great, except the old ass Nvidia GPUs cause so many issues. They take 20+ seconds to wake from sleep, they make me unable to play games even though the iGPU should work because it still defaults to the discrete GPU, the nouveau drivers struggle with stuff like gnome graphical acceleration, and they lead to unnecessary battery drain. I have attempted to disable Nouveau to get it to just use the iGPU, but this creates the effect of just using it with zero drivers, no graphical acceleration of any kind, even just for desktop. There are apps for macOS that allow you to simply force the system to only use integrated, is there anything like that for Linux?

Absolute steal for 30$

I found this laptop listed as “for parts” on FB marketplace for $45 canadian. Listing said it was a 2010. I had no idea the specs and assumed it was an i5-520m or i7-620m. I negotiated it to $30 CAD. It came with no hard drive or bottom screws, but it had everything else. I also did not know the battery condition.

I take it home and put an SSD with linux in it, and i check with fastfetch, turns out it is not 2010 but actually a 2012 quad-core i7 model with 8gb ram and GT 650M. Everything works perfectly on it, and it has no scratches or dents on it, pretty much mint. Even the battery holds good charge, lasting about 3 hours of normal use.

My game will constantly stutter, basically just freeze for 5-10 seconds. It happens during cutscenes too where it will freeze visually but the audio will continue and the visuals will continue where the audio is once it has unfrozen. At times it is worse than others. The game is still playable (I finished it), but I am replaying, and it is so annoying especially during cutscenes. My specs are: 15 9400, 16gb
RAM, 1080ti, Windows 7 Ultimate. I played it on hard drive originally, but it still happens on SSD after i moved it to my 600mbps ssd. How do I fix this?

▲ 3 r/Fedora

I am using a 15 inch late 2013 MacBook Pro with a GT 750M on fedora. Works well, except for Nvidia related problems. It will sometimes crash my desktop environment and send me back to the login screen when streaming my screen over discord and play a video at the same time, and once or twice has tried to swap to the gpu during normal use and crashed gnome. It would be nice to disable it all together, get the thermal and battery boost, and the Iris Pro 5200 1.5gb should be able to handle video encode for streaming as well as gnome animations well.
