EDM pioneers Vol. 2: 1980-1983
Back in Februari I made a mix of disco tracks from 1976 to 1979 which were basically the very first to embrace and integrate synths and electronics. I coined it The EDM Pioneers.
Now, here‘s volume 2, same principle, but this time with tracks from 1980 to 1983. Mostly, because the first three tracks are still a bit older. Actually, for the opening two tracks I copied an original dj-set from 1977, by legendary NY DJ Jim Burgess.
He opened his set with a semiclassical piece from ‘The Planets’, by Gustav Holst, following it with a track from French synth legends Space. Damn brilliant I think, so all credit to Mr. Burgess for those two opening tracks. (His original set can be found on YT).
From then on it’s my mix. And same as Vol. 1, I tried to select innovative (post)disco tracks, with either interesting use of electronics or maybe a minimalistic approach.
Mixing tracks from this timeframe is a bit of a challenge 😅. All have live drum or live rhythm components, which means unstable, drifting bpm. Also, dynamics and loudness are all over the place, and since the mix feature has no equalizing or normalization options, volumes may vary. At the same time, it gives a kind of organic, authentic feel, so forgive me for some not entirely seamless transitions 😉
Any way, if you’re interested in a bit of dance history, check it out and let me know what you think 🧘🏻
Also, for those interested, here is Volume 1, 1976-1979
