The "perfect" edison cube of 4 decks.

This is just a fun thought experiment, so please don't take it too seriously!

Also, if I'm misunderstanding what a "cube" is, I apologize. My understanding is that it's essentially a premade, pick-up-and-play collection of cards—usually for drafting. For this thought experiment, though, I'm imagining a "cube" containing four complete, ready-to-play Edison decks.

EDIT: the term I’m talking about is a sealed battle box! Not a cube

I've often wondered: What four decks would make up the "perfect" Edison cube?

The idea is that a group of friends—or maybe two brothers in their 30s or 40s—could pull this thing off the shelf whenever they feel like playing the best format of all time.

Importantly, I'm not asking, "What are the four best decks in Edison?" Nor am I trying to assemble the four most competitive decks possible.

Instead, I'm looking for four decks that:

  • Are relatively easy to pick up and play
  • Represent different aspects of Edison
  • Are reasonably well matched and competitive with one another
  • Feature iconic cards/archetypes from the era
  • Still feel relevant in modern Edison
  • Ideally have some historical connection to SJC Edison itself

That last point isn't mandatory, but I think there's something cool about being able to say, "This archetype was actually represented at SJC Edison."

With that said, I think three decks are basically no-brainers: Blackwing, Machina Gadget, and Lightsworn. The fourth slot is where things get interesting.

1. Blackwing

No-brainer.

It's one of the best-known decks of the format, easy enough to pick up and play, powerful, and has the anime connection. It's also STILL competitive in modern Edison.

Easy pick. Moving on.

Cover card: Blackwing Armor Master.

2. Machina Gadget

I think this is another very strong choice.

It was represented at SJC Edison, so it gets historical points. It's straightforward to play and easy to teach or relearn after you haven't played in a while. It's also still a legitimate choice in modern Edison and can absolutely steal wins.

The gameplay is interactive, and unlike some simpler decks, it still has a recognizable boss monster.

Cover card: Machina Fortress.

3. Lightsworn

This gives us something mechanically different from the first two without becoming overly complicated.

It's another historically relevant SJC Edison deck, and it represents one of the most iconic archetypes of the era.

And obviously...

Cover card: Judgment Dragon.

So what gets the fourth slot?

This is where I have trouble.

Vayu Turbo: Not too difficult to play, and obviously we know about its competitive success. However, it doesn't have the same historical SJC Edison argument, and it feels somewhat derivative when Blackwing is already included. Not my favorite choice for this particular purpose.

Diva Hero/Diva Zombie: Cool decks, but perhaps a little too complicated for the pick-up-and-play concept. Also not historically tied to SJC Edison to my knowledge.

Dragon Turbo: No.

Plant decks: I'm actually not knowledgeable enough about their learning curve to confidently judge them. I could be convinced.

Fairy decks: I think they're a little too close to Lightsworn for what I'm trying to accomplish.

Fish OTK/Frog decks: I know these are modern Edison fan favorites and incredibly competitive, but I'm not a huge fan of them for this particular concept. They're a bit too complex for something you're supposed to pull off the shelf and immediately start playing.

Gladiator Beast: Probably has one of the strongest arguments. It's historically relevant to SJC Edison AND still competitive today. Despite playing against the deck countless times, though, I feel like it might be just a little too complex for the pick-up-and-play idea. Still, this might objectively be the strongest alternative.

Hero Beat/Diva Hero Beat: Not a bad choice at all. You could showcase Absolute Zero as the deck's boss monster, and neither variation is particularly difficult to play. The more I think about it, the more I like this option. Unfortunately, it loses the historical SJC Edison bonus.

Gravekeeper's: This was originally my top choice. Konami even showcased Gravekeeper's as being played at SJC Edison, so there's at least some historical connection. It's also extremely easy to pick up and play. My concerns are that the power level may be noticeably below the other three—especially when you don't open/turbo into Royal Tribute—and it doesn't really have that iconic "boss monster" you can slap on the front of the deck box.

Six Samurai: Similar to Gravekeeper's in that it was showcased during SJC Edison and would give the cube another recognizable archetype. This might actually be another interesting choice.

X-Saber: Probably a little too complex for what I'm going for.

After thinking through all of them, I think I'd ultimately give the fourth spot to Diva Hero Beat

It's not overly complicated, it's competitive enough to hang with the other three, it introduces a different style of gameplay, and—maybe most importantly—it gives Elemental HERO Absolute Zero the spotlight. That's an iconic and fun card from the era and gives the fourth deck a real identity.

So my "perfect" casual Edison cube would be:

Blackwing
Machina Gadget
Lightsworn
Diva Hero Beat

Four recognizable decks, four iconic cover monsters, different enough gameplay styles, and all competitive enough that you can just pull them out and play.

Would you guys agree with these four? And if not, what would you replace the fourth deck with?

Outpatient Peds: respectfully, how do you do complete care seeing 30+ patients a day?

I’m an outpatient early career attending, and myself and my experienced partners see around 18-24 a day on average, sometimes more sometimes less.

I’ve seen in residency and heard of outpatient Peds jobs that regularly expect and see 30+, which is just mind boggling to me now that I’m a few years in it. I consider myself incredibly competent with a computer and efficient in the room, but there’s so much stuff that provides a little extra time with a patient that I just can’t fathom a doc who sees 30+ giving the time and attention it needs.

Yes a common cold can be knocked out in 2-4mins. Yes a well check for a 4-9 year old who’s healthy can be completed in like 5mins.

But a newborn with new parents with several good questions, AND explaining jaundice AND explaining anticipatory guidance to first time parents takes some time! Another thing, adolescents who have a mental health concern or an abnormal mental health screener must be addressed . Yes we aren’t counselors but that takes time, let alone counseling on sleep, nutrition etc. A newborn first time parents who comes 5mins late with jaundice and several questions does not deserve to be rushed and completed under 10mins. An adolescent who is obese, is due for 16yr shots, and has a positive mood screener deserves brief private teen questions and counseling on the issues and I can’t fathom that visit being completed under 15mins consistently. A new adolescent with anxiety/headaches/abdominal pain is probably going to need a longer explanation as to why their symptoms are likely benign and not concerning and what they can do for lifestyle changes. What is likely functional abdominal pain is often more destressing to parents and deserves a thorough hisotry, exam, and explanation as to why it is benign .

I understand some of these pediatricians have scribes which I’ve never seen in outpatient peds and may be a bigger factor, but I’m just curious what other people’s thoughts are. Sometimes I come out of a room for situations like the above that may take me 15 sometimes 20mins and I’m like I can’t fathom NOT giving this the time it deserves

Edit: So for a more specific example, a 16 yr old for well check, sports physical, due for shots, is obese, 2-5mins late, positive mood screener, parent has at least one unrelated concern. This is a very common visit-type for me and to cover standard well check questions, private teenager questions, AND full physical will take me at least 15mins if not more. Again visits like this aren't uncommon. A Pediatrician seeing 35 patients a day is addressing all the above?

Edison is hitting stagnation/twighlight phase like goat, and I think Konami's divorce from Time Wizard was more of a catalyst than we think.

First off, I love Edison. It's my favorite format, no question. But I can't help noticing that the broader hype around the format seems to have cooled off.

My thesis: Edison is absolutely not dead. From a "competitive casual" perspective, though, I think the big wave of hype has clearly died down. It feels like we're trending toward being more of a niche community—similar to Goat Format—rather than a true third competitive format where everyone has an Edison deck between rounds and major Yu-Gi-Oh creators are constantly covering it.

A few things I've noticed:

  • Frazier has transitioned to commentating only.
  • Edison Club stopped making podcasts, and their final episode was literally titled something along the lines of "Edison is Getting Boring."
  • I'm seeing fewer tier lists and discussion videos.
  • E3 Yu-Gi-Oh appears to be taking a break from the game and trying other games.

Now let me address the two responses that are probably coming:

1) "F Konami. They only made Edison worse anyway. We don't need them."

I actually agree. Konami fumbled Time Wizard support for what felt like a short-sighted money grab.

2) "You're clearly wrong. Look at all the events. RBETs, Retro Reborn, online tournaments, etc."

I see all of those. I never said Edison is dead.

I'm saying the general hype has died down.

So why do I think this happened?

As a self-proclaimed "competitive casual," I think Konami cutting ties with Time Wizard support was the single biggest catalyst—even if a lot of Edison players don't want to admit it.

My hot take is that Edison was thriving because it had both grassroots events and marquee events like Ultimate Time Wizard. We had major tournaments to follow, decklists to study, tournament reports to read, and content creators making videos around them.

Ever since Ultimate Time Wizard ended, my excitement has definitely taken a hit, even though I never attended one. I always looked forward to the decklists, the stories, and the tournament coverage afterward. There's something about an "official sanctioned" Edison tournament that adds a little more meaning for tournament success for a decklist (just a me thing).

The other reason may be much simpler: Edison is a snapshot format, and time has passed. Every format has a hype cycle, and eventually things normalize. That's not necessarily anyone's fault.

The main reason I'm making this post is to see whether others have noticed the same thing. Does it feel like the overall hype around Edison has cooled off? And if so, do you think the end of Ultimate Time Wizard played a major role, or am I overestimating its impact?

Anyone use a Mac laptop to play games on steam?

Obviously selection is somewhat limited, but has anyone in general found some success? Perhaps for some smaller indies and such?

I just found out I can play slay the spire 2 on mac as a switch 2 owner waiting for the console release. Can I rely on the mac for occasional steam only roguelikes that aren’t on switch?

Should I sell my PS5 for gamestop credit as my gaming moves mostly to roguelikes on Switch 2?

I jjust upgraded to a switch 2. Lately , I basically exclusively play roguelikes: Hades 2 , Slay the spire, Ball x pit, Monster train.

I initially got the PS5 for FF7 remake trilogy, but now with the announcment that the third installment is going cross platofrm, I'm really thinking of selling the PS5 for more spending money.

Currently, my only PS5 game is rebirth. Everything else is Switch.

I do have light interest in superhero games, and the biggest loss will be Wolverine, and I did enjoy Spiderman series, but I'm not dying to play long adventure games lately.

One concern I have, is the potential announcement for LAst of us 3, Parappa sequel, or Jak and Daxter sequel, but chances for these games is low and it's all theoretical .

I do like Star wars and loved KOTOR. The new zero company game looks intriguing but again if it's just that game I'm okay. I've never play XCOM.

Games I'm looking forward to:

- Binding of Isaac switch 2 physical

- Any and all pokemon

- Any and all Zelda

-Slay the spire 2 and enter the gungeon 2

What do you guys think? My gaming landscape is mostly roguelikes, pokemon/zelda, and FF7 trilogy. Is there any hesitation you guys would add? I'm interested in sellling high before a PS6 announcement

What I would like from a Balatro 2 that won’t happen

I haven’t touched Balatro in about a year, but when I played it I was addicted and I unlocked enough decks that I felt content. It’s a great game! Not as deep, but great nonetheless.

One thing that I would love that will never happen for a potential sequel or expansion is nerdifying it and adding some sort of lore. It won’t happen for a hundred reasons, but the most important reason is because I listened to an interview by LocalThunk where he said his origins were truly from playing card games (poker cards) and not from nerdy games like magic, yugioh , etc.

What I would love is perhaps some texts based lore in a short story mode for each run. Perhaps each joker card has a little bit of lore. Maybe joker cards themselves talk in between individual stages and interact with other jokers. Just brief text based dialogue. Idk! And the biggest room for improvement is for bosses, instead of “ideas” like the wave , it’s like a boss who taunts you before the run and has a face or something, like an anti joker or evil joker, you know what I mean! And let their be final bosses. Perhaps the Legendary jokers can have a greater purpose.

Again nothing too deep, just something fun to nerd about and give the game a little bit of a collectible card feeling. It won’t happen, but curious if anyone else would be interested in something like that

So sick of these goggles, need suggestions

I need sun protective goggles. I’ve used the top rated ones on Amazon, two of them. One of them is clear and comfortable but will leak one side just the slightest amount and ruin my whole swim.

The other one doesn’t leak but even on the least tight setting, it’s so painful.

Anything that doesn’t leak or hurt?

Late to the party and have a switch, the sale needs to hurry!!!

I decided I want to get this game a few weeks ago but I JUST missed a sale where it was $2.99 on the nintendo store :(

Ugh how much longer yall think before it's on sale again? I'd feel silly spending $15 only for it to be on sale coming soon

Why did i like these games and not these?

I'm not trashing any game, clearly I have preferences. Just curious if anyone else is like me? I feel like I need instant dopamine, and don't want too much manual dexterity.

Loved:

- Hades 1/2: Probably the most different from my games because it requires manual dexterity and timing compared to the rest, but the rewards at the end of each battle and the progression are just so tangible I love it.

- Slay the spire/Blatro: I think I love that I can take my time with thought and it's slower paced. And again I can feel my deck slowly building and building.

- Monster Train 2: A lot more complex than the above card games (from an outright systems sense). Like I felt like it took a lot longer to jump in and learn compared to the above. But once learned it was fun. Maybe less of the dopamine hit than the above.

- Ball X pitt/Vampire survivors: I love the simplicity of the gameplay, and the upgrades are instant satisfaction.

-------

Didn't click:

- Shogun showdown/Cobalt Core: To be fair I think I only gave both like an hour. It felt like too much thought and precision needed. The upgrades to me didn't feel like (okay now we're getting somewhere!) feeling. I could be playing them wrong tho.

- Dead cells: I think it required a lot more work and mental effort to get to the upgrades. Again I think I gave it a good few runs before I quit.

- Vampire Crawlers: This one is interesting because it's the most recent. I thought I was going to love it but I didn't , which is okay. It's certainly not a bad game and I'm not upset over $10. But I think I didn't care for the "turbo" aspect of game, it made the cards feel a little bit more meaningless . the upgrades didn't give me that instant dopamine boost. I think I beat a couple of early runs and lost interest. Granted, I love the asthetic and music, I just don't feel compelled to play again.

---

Looking forward to:

- Never played Binding of Isaac! I reserved the physical BOI Repentence plus for late June on switch 2.

- Mewgenics . Waitng for the switch 2 release. This one i'm a little nervous because just reading peripherally it seems super complex, but I'm still gonna try it nonetheless.

- You guys think I'll like Enter the Gungeon series? I'd be down to get the new one whenever it comes out

Help me decide if I should upgrade to switch 2

I love my Switch 1 Lite very dearly, but I think it's time to upgrade. I just have a few questions that I would greatly appreciate.

  1. ) If I sell my switch 1 lite for a switch 2, what happens to my game saves? I have Hades 2 physical that works in both platforms, any chance I can carry that progress over?

2.) All my digital game purchass from my switch 1 like Slay the spire will appear on my switch 2 when I log in?

3.) All my cartridges of Switch 1 will work ?

4.) Is there any loss or consideration or is it as simple as logging in and done?

5.) Should I clear anything before selling my switch 1?

Thank you!!!!
