RutOS from Teltonika vs Opnsense for home network?

Hello all,

I don't have any experience with either, though I have worked with Pfsense in the past.

Was wondering which is a better fit for home usage? I want to be able to tinker and have alot of advanced options.

RutOS looks nice, but as I said, I have no experience.

Hardware would be either Teltonika Altos or a official hardware from Opnsense, which is a tad exspensive.

APT Repos get removed after updating to a new major version.. everytime!

Hello all,

I don't have any bug report or the likes, just my experience and wanted to see if this is normal behaviour or a bug.

I started using Kubuntu on 24.04 and upgrade to every major release while being on 26.04 today.

Every single major upgrade all of my or most of my APT repos got removed. I manually added them all, or so I thought.

Opened Element (matrix) app today which gave me a error saying my version was too old, thinking I always keep everything up to date with Discover and sudo apt update I checked and it was 1 year old software.. my APT repo was missing, I added it and updated and it works now but man.. is this is a major security issue if peoples APT repo disappear?

Are .deb packages not the best way to install using a .deb system? I always pick .deb over snap or flatpak but man is it a headache to keep track of and update.

Noise level on MikroTik CRS320-8P-8B-4S+RM ?

Hello,

I can't seem to find anything regarding noise on this switch, it only mentions that it has 3 fans.

It may sound silly, but i want to use this at home and it looks very.. enterprise, like it belongs in a business rack, so i'm a bit worried that it's loud?

Just want it for the PoE++ and add 2 AP's and 2-3 Outdoor 4k cameras. But I'm not sure if those devices would even use PoE++ or only PoE+ and i'm guessing this makes a difference in how loud it will be, depending on how hard it's working?

Wi-Fi 7 Access Points & European Alternatives to Unifi?

Hi all,

I’m looking to set up a simple home network: a router for my fiber WAN from my ISP, a switch maybe 12-16 port. a firewall (if not built into the router), and a couple of Wi-Fi 7 access points.

But this seems surprisingly complicated. European providers like Fritzbox offer mesh Wi-Fi systems, not standalone access points I don’t want mesh! And they don’t seem to sell standalone switches; it’s all DSL/fiber routers.

Then there’s MikroTik: their only Wi-Fi 7 indoor solution is basically a switch with Wi-Fi built in, not a ceiling-mounted access point.

Teltonika mostly sells 5G routers, though some support routing protocols like BGP and have a WAN port. But I’m not sure if that’s enough to support a fiber connection setup instead of 5G.

And honestly, design matters in a home. I don’t want ugly, outdated, or industrial-looking devices.

I love the look and functionality of Unifi, but it’s sucks that it’s American. Is there a European alternative that is more like Unifi, design wise and product wise?

I guess I could buy router from Fritzbox, Switch from Mikrotik and Wifi 6 access point from Teltonika and then log in with ssh or plug in a cable one by one device instead of a having a single pane of glass like Unifi.

Unifi also offers camers for outdoor and a doorbell and stuff like that, with a build in NVR on their router, it's just so easy and beautiful!

what do you all use?

Edit: What I found so far from you guys

Router/FW: Opnsense or Teltonika (Altos) Opnsense EU made hardware is very exspensive though. Opsense is also a FW.

https://shop.opnsense.com/product/dec750-opnsense-desktop-security-appliance/
https://www.teltonika-networks.com/products/routers/altos

AP:

Lancom Wifi 7 or Teltonika Wifi 6 - Lancom is very exspensive

https://www.teltonika-networks.com/products/access-points/tap400
https://rs-nc.rohde-schwarz.com/en/products/wireless-lan/indoor-access-points/rs-lancom-lw-700

Switch:

This is my biggest problem as it's hard to find a PoE++ and 2.5G port switch (Teltonika AP TAP400 only uses PoE+ I think? and i'm looking at outdoor cameras from Ajax system, the first one I checked out uses max 8W so that should be PoE+ aswell? but i'm not sure yet on which model to buy or if there will come any other PoE equipment that requries PoE++, but it's nice to be future proof)

Lancom exists but is REALLY exspensive.. So this is my biggest hurdle atm, finding a switch.

Mikrotik exists with 1G ports but has PoE++ And i'm just worried about the size of it, that it will be loud and industrial. And it sucks that's it's only 1G when both Router and AP are 2.5G-

Also found this 2.5G Switch from Lancom, but only PoE+

Which electric SUV car is most european?

Hello all,

I'm looking for a budget friendly family SUV that is electric.

I want it to be made and owned by a European company, I find it a bit confusing to look around, as Volvo is Chinese owned and their EX30 model started as being made in China and later being made in Belgium (EU).

I've landed on Volkswagen ID.Cross but I wanted to see if people had any better knowledge of a more "European" car.

I want to wear Europe on my sleeves, so I'd rather get a worse car or more expensive car made in EU, than a better/cheaper car from china/us, as I want to support EU first and foremost.

Thanks.

Edit: Might be worth mentioning that it might be more like a mini-suv as a VW Id cross is about 4.1 meter long while a ford or other american suvs often reach almost 6 meters long. I am NOT looking for a big suv, just the formfactor of a suv since it's nice for a family.

Tips on how to self study physics/math from scratch?

Hi everyone,

I’m deeply fascinated by physics. Especially particles, atoms, the universe, stars, black holes and the Big Bang.

Watching Brian Cox and Neil deGrasse Tyson has awoken my curiosity, and I just want to dig deeper and deeper. like what is Planck? I don't understand it by watching youtube videos, I'm probably missing the math skills or something else.

I just watched a video about how it's not electrons that carry energy from a battery, but it's the electromagnetic field using the maxwell equation (which I don't understand) and I find this mind blowing fascinating

Currently, I work full time as a computer network specialist and have two kids, but I’d love to dedicate my free evenings/time to learn physics and math. Right now, I’m a complete beginner, though I have some basic understanding from watching Brian and Neil.

I’d appreciate recommendations on the best way to self-study, whether through online resources or beginner-friendly books.

Thanks.

Crypto-Seedphrase in PW manager, safe or unsafe

Hello all,

I was thinking of saving my seedphrase on my Proton Pass as a note or password, but I was wondering if you think this is a safe thing to do.

When I unlock my Proton client on Linux with a PIN or with fingerprint biometrics on my phone, does that expose the entire vault or only the single item i'm looking at a time?

My Proton Pass has a very very complex password + 2FA and with multiple backups on multiple locations, so I feel safe with my Proton Pass, i'm just more worried if this is a stupid thing to do, if my PC has or gets a virus in the future, how does Proton Pass handle that?

Camera for private home use, indoor and outside/garden and doorbell from EU?

Hello,

I was planning on using Ubiquity camera, but are there any EU owned and preferred made cameras for private persons for indoor and in the garden and doorbell? I prefer it being completely local, no subscription, and no proprietary software or protocols.

I would set it up with a NAS and would like to be able to livestream on a tablet or something.

In light of recent events, I searched this sub for HW wallet, but all the posts were years old. Would love some updated help. Thanks

Hi everyone,

In light of Yoroi/Secondfi getting hacked/exploited which I've used for years as a hot wallet, I got spooked enough into finally going for a hardware wallet, but I don't feel like I have the time to do too much research, since my ADA is still on the compromised Yoroi wallet.

I’m looking for a quick help on choosing a hardware wallet for Cardano and Midnight. Options like Trezor, Ledger, and Tangem are on my radar but i'm not sure which one is best suited for Cardano/Midnight?

After getting the wallet, should I link it to a third-party interface like Lace, or stick with the brand’s built-in wallet (e.g., Trezor Suite, Ledger Live)

Also is there any best practice/tips on how to use the HW wallet? I can see the Ledger can use 4-8 PIN code, while Trezor offers up to 50 PIN code, what is general best practice? Edit: Trezor can even use fingerprint biometric.

Lastly, I know storing seed phrases online is discouraged, but would it be acceptable to store it in an encrypted password manager just once during setup? I’m uncomfortable with physical backups (paper at home, with family/friends) due to risks like theft or fire. I’ve used a highly secure encrypted password manager for years—would this be a viable alternative?

Will a Xbox controller work for Playstation 5?

Hello,

I was wondering if a Xbox controller will work on PS5.

That's pretty much it, I don't use any PS5 controller features as I turned those off in the system settings.

If yes, would a Xbox controller also be able to wake up the Playstation? I know Nintendo switch 1 pro controller works on Switch 2, but can't wake it up

Thanks

Edit: Also, would it work on Linux? They don't mention Linux anywhere.

26.04: Error while installing package: old linux-headers-7.0.0-22-generic package postinst maintainer script subprocess failed with exit status 1

Hello,

I'm getting this error alot when updating through Discover, but it seems the updates went through even if the error shows?

Error while installing package: old linux-headers-7.0.0-22-generic package postinst maintainer script subprocess failed with exit status 1

Also this error used to say 7.0.0.15 but after supposedly updating to 7.0.0.22 via Discover, my hostnamectl output still says Kernel: Linux 7.0.0-15-generic

I'm on 26.04 and I updated from 25.10 via GUI

Any ideas?

How does on update BIOS on Kubuntu? it's not getting updates from Discover and Lenovo doesnt mention Linux under compatible OS

Hello,

I switched to Kubuntu a little over 1 year ago, and I just noticed with hostnamectl that my bios is running version JUCN66WW on my Legion 5 Pro 16ARH7H

However, the website says the newest version is JUCN68WW released 1 year ago and it says compatible OS is windows 11, doesn't mention Linux at all.

So is it not possible to update my BIOS while using Linux?

Is there a reason DisplayLink driver stopped working going from 25.10 to 26.04?

Hello,

I can see the DisplayLink Driver supports 24.04 but i've used it from 24.04 to 25.10 and now after upgrading to 26.04 the driver doesn't work anymore, and neither does my 2nd display monitor.

Is there a reason for this? what's the change from 25.10 to 26.04 that makes it stop working? both are wayland etc.

DisplayLink may take months or longer to update their driver, so i'm hoping it's something I can fix, or a bug with 26.04?

Ubuntu Driver for Downloads Section | Synaptics

Other than that, 26.04 has been butter smooth, also with nvidia drivers. My only other "problem" is that after restarting the machine, the lock screen is not using the wallpaper i've chosen.

EDIT: Oh, I might have figured it out, the latest DisplayLink 6.2.0 release notes mention driver support for kernel 6.17 which ubuntu 25.10 had.

"- Support for kernel up to 6.16

- Added preliminary support for kernel 6.17"

So it's basically the new 7.0.15 kernel for 26.04 that's the problem?

Mio: Memories in Orbit is amazing! More games like this ??

Hello,

I usually always only play bigger game titles like Zelda or Expedition 33, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy games etc.

However i've tried a couple of games like Hollow Knight because of all the hype, but it just doesn't click.

I watched a "10 games to buy" video from Beatemups and he mentioned MIO, I liked the graphic, but wasn't sure as it's not usually my style. My girlfriend sat next to me and said the graphic and the game looked awesome and basically demanded I bought it lol.

Anyways, it's amazing, from the get go I just fell in love... I also bought Saros for PS5 the same week, which I playedfor a couple of hours but I laid it down and i've played nonstop MIO instead. (Coming from a massive Returnal fan)

So my question is why is it so good? Why does a platform game like MIO click for me, yet Hollow knight which everyone seems to love, doesnt?

How can I find more alternatives like MIO and filter out the "hollow knight" style games?

Hope this post makes sense, but damn what a game, and I want mooore.

Thanks!

Headquarters? Where is Sidephone based?

Hello,

This project looks very exciting!

However I can't see where this company is located?

Also the website says 1 year warranty, but in Europe/EU there is a minimum 2 year warranty on everything you buy.

Using Windows 11 at work only strengthens my Love for Linux at home!

I wanted to take a moment to share my appreciation, especially since most of Linux is made by volunteers!

About a year ago, I switched to Ubuntu (Kubuntu) for my gaming PC at home, and today at work, I had a sudden realization of just how frustrating Windows can be. Despite my work PC being powerful, the system feels sluggish, unintuitive, and just... off. After using Windows my entire life, I’ve completely fallen in love with Linux, without having any know-how in using the command line.

Even my girlfriend is almost ready to make the switch. Just waiting on a few .docx quirks in LibreOffice to be ironed out since she’s a writer.

Also, a shoutout to KDE! I’ve donated to them because I absolutely love using KDE Plasma on Ubuntu. The attention to detail, like their custom themes for LibreOffice etc, makes the experience so enjoyable.

I used IBAN to donate, so no money goes to third party provides like PayPal, it's a direct bank transfer.
Other ways to Donate - KDE Community

I've even considered learning to code, just to be a part of the community, but i'm gonna wait for my kids to be a bit older, I need my sleep first, hehe 😄

Thanks and have a lovely day!

What is the correct way to install Joplin on Linux?

Hello all,

As i'm not really familiar with Linux, i'm a bit confused.. I installed Joplin as a Flatpak via Discover on Kubuntu, everything is working fine.

I noticed I was running a 3.5 version, so I press check for update and it downloaded a 3.6 version, but it wouldn't install as it was a appimage download.

This got me digging and I noticed there is a Snap version available on Discover, there is the flatpak which hasn't received a update in a while, then on Joplin webpage there is the Linux button I can press to download a appimage, but further down in the text they say the best way to install on Linux is via this command

wget -O - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/laurent22/joplin/dev/Joplin_install_and_update.sh | bash

Is it just me or is this confusing? it seems to me aswell that I can't update Joplin through Discover which updates every other app I got, if I install via this terminal command.

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if Pocketbook devices ever receive major OS version upgrades during their lifespan?

I’ve noticed that there are two Pocketbook Note models with Android—one running Android 11 and the other Android 12.

I’m considering Android because I want to use eReolen, the local library app, which requires at least Android 11. However, I’m a bit concerned about the app’s longevity if it updates and starts requiring Android 12 or 13 in the future.

Also, is it a bad idea to buy a "Note" device if I only want to read? It seems like Android is only available on the Note models.

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to buy an e-reader, but the options are overwhelming and the requirements are a bit confusing.

I need a device that:

  • Isn’t locked into a single ecosystem like Kindle,
  • Supports multiple file formats,
  • Allows purchases from different bookstores,
  • Lets me transfer books from my phone and/or PC.

Here’s the catch: my local library only has an Android app (and isn’t partnered with Libby), and Mofibo (a Danish e-book service) also only offers an Android app. So, I think the e-reader needs to run Android.

I’ve been considering the PocketBook Color Note, which runs Android 12. But I’m worried:

  • Is Android 12 too old? (Phones are almost at Android 17 now.)
  • Is it still good for reading, even though it’s called a "Note"?
  • Will it last for years, given my library requires Android 8 and Mofibo requires Android 11?

I also looked at Tolino, but it doesn’t run Android, so I wouldn’t be able to use the apps I need.

Will the pocketbook get yearly android OS updates like a phone`

Any suggestions or insights?
