Just finished Madoka, so here’s my Letterboxd review (plus some additional thoughts)

Once again, no theories. Raw, general thoughts. The only new thing I’ll say is I’m going to see if I can get the 4K set of the movies (Recaps + Rebellion) and just watch Rebellion with it. Thoughts I didn’t apply to my original Letterboxed review will look like this.

There are slight spoilers in the review, so be cautious.

————————————

That was one HELL of a joyride.

From beginning to end, this little anime that could dared to be what many didn’t do very much around that time. Take risks. A dark, deceitful, albeit beautifully told tale of the deconstruction of “Magical Girls” and how we perceive it as a whole. There’s a sort of elegance that gives it that much level of “oomph”. It allows us to think and analyze its meaning in such a way that it could make EVANGELION look like its older sister. The story itself is pretty simple on the outside, >!but gets quickly complex by the second half alongside the intensity of the content itself.!<* *While I didn’t end up crying at the end, there was a good amount of emotion, and it does test you in a few scenes. Hell, if you pay attention to the sound design and the editing, you’ll begin to notice how things play out.

Characters are complex, yet at the same time, so simple. You understand their motive and goals, even if they seem far-fetched and foolish in the long run. We, with the benefit of hindsight know that. To the characters though, >!it’s a dream to have a wish come true!<*. On top of that, they’re kids.* Their personalities are diverse and recognizable as well. A hard thing to do when you only have 12 episodes and the length of your typical mini-series. Madoka is the kind-hearted, optimistic one. While someone like Homura is stern, but not to the point of her being cold. She’s still likable on the level of the former. Keybey is… something else entirely. I won’t spoil it, but do pay attention to how he’s framed in a few instances. You’ll know right away.

The animation is the star of the show however. Especially during the “Labyrinth” sequences. How different art styles are used, from outline-less to Terry Gilliam styled cut-out animation. It allows the anime to feel distinct from the others outside of its twisted nature. Outside of that, while most of it is standard TV animation, there are moments where it truly shines, like the fight scenes for example. Dare I say, it’s pretty cool in of itself to try out something that can just “wow” you, and Shaft certainly were onto something with it.

As if you couldn’t tell, I had a great time with this. Such an interesting show that really got me hooked. I understand why it’s considered one of the anime greats of the 21st century. Can’t wait to watch Rebellion.

Best episodes go to 3, 9, 10 and 11.

Giving this a 9/10 mostly because the first two episodes are a bit cookie-cutter in nature, but they’re not bad. They introduce the story and characters pretty well. >!Plus, both of them gives us some EXTREMELY subtle insight on what’s going to happen in the other episodes without being upfront.!< I just don’t think it stands amongst the rest of the series, and that’s a compliment. Just a nitpick though.

With that outta the way, what are your thoughts? I’d like to hear them.

Edit: Removed the comment on the fan-service. Just thought that was unnecessary.

SECOND criterion sale haul

The bottom two are UHD. The rest are Blu-ray.

  1. Baron Munchausen. I am aware of Gilliam's visual style from when I watched Brazil. This just looks to be more of that visual flair, but MUCH lighter in tone.

  2. This time around, not really. The closest I can say is Eastern Condors. Only because I wanted better image quality than that god-awful Fox DVD, and the original mix (and that's coming from someone who watched the film with the DTS mix)

  3. The Runner and 'Round Midnight. I just thought the covers looked cool, plus I felt like I wasn't expanding my horizons enough.

  4. Couldn't find Days of Heaven this time, so November it is. We'll count Watership Down if that doesn’t get a US 4K until then.

I found them

ThatKID here!

A while ago, I reported to y'all about a canceled Touhou fan-fic/web-series that was titled "Touhou Future Project", which also gave you a look into the script and a conceptual storyboard. I did not mention anything about the concept art itself because I, at the time, didn't know where all of them where.

Turns out, it was hiding right from under my nose. Looking through a couple of my old sketchbooks, as well as archived photos I took revealed some pieces I wasn't aware about for the past two years!

So, here they are! In its edgy, 14 year old glory!

Wanted to have some fun, so I made this concept poster for the other Touhou fan-fic

Howdy folks! I was just about to ride off into the sunset when I decided to share this here concept poster! Inspired by the numerous Japanese film posters of the past, down to including a “70mm” symbol!

Included here are some of the elements used to create this, plus the original failed version of the main artwork! It took a while longer than intended to create, but I’m happy with it. Maybe it’ll get me back into that Touhou mood I’ve been lacking in for the past week.

Much of my time spent on this was also spent on thinking of how I was gonna create the character profiles. I actually was stuck trying to do that.

Anyways, what do you think? Does it look convincing?

Small concept assortment (+ MAJOR TOUHOU BEGINNINGS UPDATE)

Hello. It’s been a while. How are you all doing?

Me? I’m kinda livid right now. In a good way! As of writing this, I have completed the second (yes, SECOND) revision of the first draft of TB and managed to get it down to the 90-120 page requirements of screenplay form.

For those who don’t know; when I created the raw version of that first draft, the page count was a staggering 211 pages. The first revision cut that down to 169 pages, still too long for what the film is supposed to be. The current draft was me making the first major cuts from the film. Shots; dialogue; sections of scenes, and even entire sequences were being carefully cut off the film without having to break the pacing. This led to the draft now being 117 pages. Will it need another revision? Yes. Most definitely.

I am going to read it to make sure I got everything correct, but from what I know. I am going to make some drastic changes to the film as I begin development of the second draft and will make some notes to keep it fresh in my mind (No, I will not take any suggestions, but I do appreciate it).

There’s a couple of changes I already have in mind.
- Dropping Kaguya’s expository speech. Reading this made me realize she either, (a) wasn’t the best character to add to the film, or (b) the backstory didn’t move the plot in any significant way. In either case, I fell this could make Kaguya more interesting if I made her more ambiguous, allowing the audience to piece together a backstory through a visual means (therefore, making Kaguya’s character development more fulfilling by the end). This will also allow more room for Reimu and Marisa’s backstories to shine.
- Creating a secondary prologue to consider. This is the big one I want to change. Really, I want to convey what this version of Gensokyo is without the unecessary narration and exposition. Basically, THIS prologue takes place to when Reimu is just a few months old and we’re in the perspective of her mother (Saichi if you haven’t seen my last post regarding this film), where she gives her daughter some wise words on Gensokyo as a whole. We see the Hakurei Clan doing their duties in protecting Gensokyo, even with it dwindling in size, yet Saichi clings onto a hope that Reimu would someday be the face of a new generation of protectors. A new era of Gensokyo, you might say. The more I think about this prologue, the more I realize it just makes more sense. “Beginnings” Gensokyo is literately an unforgiving world, but the story takes place at a time when both Reimu and Marisa are still learning about it. They still don’t know the world around them because of what happened in their early years. Their encounter with Kaguya is meant to mirror this notion of the “wise one” trope and even Saichi’s philosophy in a different and complex way (at least, I hope to make it that way). It’s better than just giving out a history lesson, plus it’s more Royal Space Force influence for me (yay)!
- Having Tuskumi become Rinnosuke. I don’t know why, but having someone like Rinnosuke but isn’t named that is kinda stupid. In other words, this is one I should really think about. Besides, having someone named Tuskumi already makes things kinda… forgettable and bland, and I don’t want that. Joe can stay for particular reasons I won’t get into.

Hopefully I can find someone within the community with the knowledge of screenwriting that can help out soon once I get a definitive budget but that will need to wait. But I’ll need it sooner than later.

As a bonus, I decided to just let you all read the script (and the original treatment) so you can form your own opinion on it! Since they are classified as a first draft, I’m going to list off the versions of the script, so you know which one you want to read. I’m doing it this way because AO3 and FanFiction.net just seem more restrained on something like this. I will upload another revision if that comes up.

Here are the drafts:

FIRST REVISION: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SZqmwnGBkYYSAGecFpwVZvJC5-ZBf089/view?usp=drivesdk

TREATMENT: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VA6S_zCB-zJTUuWXRbZO5f_TZILzIkMB/view?usp=drivesdk

In other news, I’m going begin compiling all the concepts I did for the first half of the year into an art pieces video that should come out sometime this month (as long as Devinci Resolve doesn’t make me wanna ragequit myself). If I find an alternate route, good for me!

Also in other news, Purified Furies. I don’t know what I’m going to do with it to be honest. As much as like doing the standard book style of writing, doing it in screenplay form just sounded more fun to me. Yet, there’s a part of me that just wants to put it on hold as I work on this (or the original concept I won’t mention on this subreddit). Who knows what I’m going to do with it, but just so you know, I’m not going to upload another chapter for a while.

That’s it for me right now. See you later, ze! (And happy pride month!)
One more thing to the AI mods (not the human ones, y’all are cool): Yes, this is Touhou Related.

Apparently I didn’t do this character sheet since she’s somewhat in TB

Just a quick and late post, but I needed to draw this. Name isn’t official yet! She does play a key role despite her short time onscreen. Maybe I’ll discuss more once I cross that path.
