Feeling stressed about college and making friends

I got admitted to BTech 1st Year under Circuital branch as a day scholar student. Although I attend classes and induction sessions, I’ve been feeling quite nervous and stressed about my future..

I am an introvert. I don't any good friends even in my schools, and despite 10+ days into college life, I do not have even a single friend yet. Seeing the confidence of my peers let me feel better but stressed as I am not like them.

I truly wish to change myself and become confident enough,, but have no clue on how to start. Also, I do not have any hobbies, making it even difficult for me to participate in extra-curricular activities.

It has been 10 days for sure, but I keep thinking about the next 4 years.

If someone is going through something similar and happens to be an introvert as well, I would love to hear from them.

What's the next step after learning programming basics?

I am going to begin my first year in college soon, and I need advice from professionals.

So far, I have C/C++ and Python at decent level. However, I now don't know what I should do next.

Should I begin developing my own projects, or perhaps I should join the open-source world? I really want to see how these programming languages are applied in practice by creating something complex, not just small programs.

Also, I am quite a newbie in Git andGitHub, and I can use basic commands such as file editing, committing, and a couple more.

What else should I master to actually be able to contribute to projects? Is there any roadmap you would wish to follow back then?

Off-Campus Placements in Core branches.

I am pursuing a B.Tech in the ECE branch from a Tier 2-3 college. I wanted to know if it’s possible to apply off-campus for core companies like Nvidia, Qualcomm, AMD. These days, it’s quite common for CSE and related branches to get off-campus opportunities, but I haven’t seen many posts for core branches. If anyone has done this, please share what steps I should take starting from my first year.

Consequences of not being able to reupload the income certificate.

I selected a TFW seat during registration and uploaded my income certificate. However, there was an issue while applying for the certificate, which led to its rejection, and was asked to reupload the correct one. I received the email yesterday but only saw it today, and the deadline is tomorrow. I want to know what will happen if I don’t upload it—will I still be able to participate in further choice filling and other processes?

Which would be a better distro for me ?

I am a student. I cannot run WSL on Windows 10 because of its high resource consumption, so I am thinking of switching to Linux. However, I am confused about choosing a distro and desktop environment. Being a beginner, I would be grateful for your help in finding a suitable distro based on my requirements.

  1. It should be stable. (It would be difficult for me to troubleshoot after updates or driver issues.)
  2. It should support the latest versions of different software such as VS Code, Docker, Git, Python, and GCC.
  3. It should be somewhat customizable (mainly GUI customization).
  4. If possible, it should be lightweight on resources, although almost all Linux distributions are lighter than Windows. (This is not the most important factor.)
  5. It should not be too technical. (I cannot set up or maintain distributions like Gentoo or Arch.)

I have been using Linux Mint Cinnamon for the last few days, but I am trying to find something better.

Suggestions to increase its performance

I will be joining college this year and plan to use this beast to develop my skills.

It's an old laptop, that runs on 75% Memory usage while using Edge browser. Could you suggest ways to improve its performance so that it lasts until the end of my B.Tech?

Need Honest Advice: Safe Career Path vs Branch I Actually Love

I got a decent rank in JEE Main and currently find myself stuck between two options:

College 1 – Chemical Engineering

  • Strong reputation in its field.
  • Had a 100% placement rate this year.
  • Seems like the safer option in terms of getting a job after graduation.
  • However, the college generally does not allow inter-branch placements, so even if I spend four years building my coding and tech skills, I may not be eligible for many software roles through campus placements.

College 2 – Information Technology

  • Branch I'm genuinely interested in.
  • Placements are decent but not as strong as College 1.
  • The college is growing and improving every year.

The dilemma is that I come from a financially weak background, so I can't really afford to make a risky decision. My family situation makes placement security a very important factor.

At the same time, I've always been interested in CS/IT. I enjoy technology, programming, and can see myself building a career in that field. If I choose Chemical Engineering, I might get a more secure path to employment, but I'm worried about spending four years in a branch that isn't my primary interest. What makes the decision even harder is that College 1 doesn't really allow inter-branch placements, meaning that developing strong tech skills on my own may not translate into software placement opportunities on campus.

On the other hand, choosing IT would align with my interests, but I'm concerned about taking a chance when my family's financial situation doesn't give me much room for mistakes.

Has anyone here faced a similar choice between a safer branch with better placement records and a branch they were actually passionate about?

What would you do in my situation, and why?

How difficult would it be to switch from a non-CS branch to a CS-related career 4 years from now?

Hi seniors,

I'll be joining college this year and will likely be in a non-CS branch. If I decide to pursue software development or another CS-related career after graduation, how difficult would the transition be?

For those who made a similar switch, how was your experience? Do you think it will become easier or harder over the next 4 years given the current job market, AI, and competition?

Any advice, experiences, or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
