Taking applied math, how is my curriculum?

I'm a freshman for applied math in the Philippines and I'd say the education here isn't really on par with most countries.

For my first year, all the courses I'll be taking (that are related to my program, the rest are general education courses) include Calculus 1, Fundamentals of Computing (C language), Mathematics in the Modern World, Fundamental Concepts of Mathematics, Calculus 2, and Fundamentals of Computing (Python).

My second year includes Calculus 3, Probability & Probability Distributions, Statistical Theory, Differential Calculus, and Linear Algebra.

My third year being Advanced Calculus, Theory of Interest, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Models, General Physics, Numerical Analysis, Operations Research 1, Intro to Data Science, and General Physics 2.

Lastly for my fourth year, the courses include Mathematical Modeling, Statistical Computing, Time Series Analysis, DSA with Python, Exploratory Data Analysis, and 2 electives (with the choices being actuarial math, math finance, and graph theory and its applications.)

I feel like I'm lagging behind discrete math and lin algebra as it's placed in my 2nd-3rd year. Right now I'm studying calculus and then lin algebra. I'm also allowed to take discrete math for my 1st year, so should I do that?

Any advice would help. Thanks!

Dad copped these for $230 each, how’d he do?

So my dad was looking to upgrade both our pcs (coming from a gtx1650 and rx5500xt) and he managed to find two different dudes selling their rx7600s for $230. The two sellers originally bought them just this February and April respectively and had their original receipts with them. I’m not sure if we can claim the warranty or if its permanently tied to the name to the original buyers, but I’m just glad these two gpus are still relatively new and didn’t get used that much.

I tested them both out myself and the temperatures seemed normal while idle and under load!

Just 100%'d Nine Sols!

Got into metroidvania recently and started off with Ender Magnolia, the game was so beautiful I didn't think it would get any better after that—but oh boy was I wrong.

Everything about Nine Sols was just perfect. From the story, the art, and the gameplay—especially the gameplay. That parry system was just beautiful.

Would definitely recommend this to everybody else.

Is it okay to buy a 2nd hand NVMe?

I found a dude online selling two WD SN740 1TB for $81 each and he provided the smart data and it shows:

Performance: 100%
Health: 100%

Power on time: 64 days, 18 hours
Estimate remaining lifetime: more than 1000 days
Lifetime writes: 6.21 TB

and the other one showing:

Performance: 100%
Health: 98%

Power on time: 245 days, 19 hours
Estimated remaining lifetime: more than 1000 days
Lifetime writes: 28.16 TB

Is there anything else I should ask the dude to check before buying it?

My dad found a dude on facebook selling his used (3 years) rtx 2070 for $130 and was wondering if it’s worth getting for that price range. He’ll ofc check out if its legit and if its working before he pushes through.

Turned 18 a few days ago. Bought myself some notoriously hard games to beat.

Just finished Ender Magnolia last night since it's probably the easiest one out of the bunch—I had a lot of fun with it. I'm playing Nine Sols now and man is it way better. Wish me luck!

What are good games to show on my completionist showcase?

So far I've got Cuphead, Devil May Cry 5, Elden Ring, and Final Fantasy XV showcased on my profile. And I'm looking for great Steam games to play for a long time and 100% it. Can you guys suggest me fun, satisfying, and notably hard games worth completing?

Right now I have Hades, Blasphemous, Ender Magnolia, and Silksong lined up.

New to this subreddit and man I’m disappointed

I first found about touhou around 5 years ago through a friend on discord who was really into fumos—especially reimu (first time I found out ab reimu too). At the time I just thought they were cute, but he kept sending touhou stuff until it slowly grew on me too. Recently I realized touhou is still pretty popular, and since I’ve been back on reddit I figured, hey, maybe there’s a subreddit for that (cuz I really didn’t wanna larp being a touhou fan). Turns out there is, but man was I disappointed.

Some of the posts here are either ecchi or just straight up nsfw and hentai. I wasn’t aware how sexualized this fandom was until now and I feel weird whenever such posts come up on my feed. Now I can just leave this subreddit, but I wanna be a fan of this stuff too lol. I was really hoping to see normal fanart and people genuinely interested in discussing ab the series. I just didn’t expect some of the stuff here to be that weird.

Do I get a laptop or tablet/iPad for an applied maths degree?

I’m about to start my first year in college and was wondering which one I should get. Although, I do have a more-than-capable computer at home, so do I really need a laptop? If I were to go for the latter, which one do you guys recommend?

5600 or 5700x to pair with a 3050?

I plan on upgrading my cpu (currently using a 3600) and was wondering which one would be more reasonable.

I mainly play CS2 and other demanding single-player games. I multitask but I don’t do anything heavy such as video editing, 3D rendering, or the like.

Considering the price difference, is it worth it to get a 5700x over a 5600? And would a 3050 be able to fully utilize the 5600 let alone the 5700x?

I also plan on buying during the 7.7 sale, so can I ask which stores you guys usually buy your parts from?

Thanks!

How big is 20L compared to 28L?

I plan on getting either the Fjallraven raven 20 or 28 and I was wondering how big actually is 20L.

For context, I’ll be taking a undergrad in applied mathematics and I only plan on bringing essentials like headphones, a charger, a power bank, a calculator, probably a book, and occasionally clothes for the gym. I don’t see myself getting a laptop anytime soon as I have a more than capable computer at home.

Is an undergrad in applied mathematics good if I want to pursue ai/ml?

I’m about to start college soon and I’ve been leaning toward data science, AI, and machine learning. That got me wondering if a degree in applied math is a solid path into those fields. I know it won’t cover everything the way a CS degree would, so I’m curious—what electives should I take to bridge those gaps? And if I do end up pursuing a master’s later on, which program would make the most sense?

How do I learn calculus more intuitively?

I’m doing an undergrad in applied mathematics and I plan on specializing in the field of data science and maybe even AI/ML, so I’ll probably be surrounded by calculus for a long time. I’m currently watching Prof. Leonard’s course on calc 1 but I don’t want to feel like I’m just “passing” through his videos without actually learning anything. I want to know how things work and why they’re done in the first place.

I hope this isn’t a dumb question. Thanks in advance!

Any advice on how to approach data science with an undergrad in applied math?

I'm currently pursuing an undergrad in applied mathematics and I'm considering data science as my career path with a slight interest in AI/ML—though I wouldn't say I'm fully locked in on those fields.

I wanted to ask if a background in applied math is genuinely strong for DS, or are there gaps I should be aware of compared to CS or stats majors? I'm also wondering what subjects in and out of my major I should prioritize (for my first year, my curricula consists of subjects such as Calculus I & II, Fundamentals of Computing I & II with python, and Fundamental Concepts of Math) and if I should take any minors.

Is it also necessary to take a master's or if an undergrad + strong portfolio would land me somewhere good already?

Any advice in general would help! (even advice outside the questions I asked)
