The Genii of Liber XXII as a tool for symbolic verification: an ongoing experiment

One of the most interesting aspects of any proposal to reform or restore esoteric correspondences is a question that is rarely asked explicitly: what happens when we try to work with them in practice?

In recent years I have devoted a significant part of my research to the study of the attribution of Tzaddi and its consequences for the structure of the Tree of Life, a subject I explore at length in "The Star in Aries". However, beyond textual, historical and kabbalistic analysis, one question remains open: if certain symbolic relationships have been correctly restored, should they produce observable effects in magical and contemplative work?

With this question in mind, we have embarked on a small practical experiment using the Genii of Liber XXII.

The Genii constitute a set of symbolic intelligences whose attributes present a complex network of astrological, zodiacal and kabbalistic relationships. Precisely for this reason, they offer a particularly interesting field of work for exploring how certain theoretical configurations manifest in practical experience.

The aim of the experiment is not to prove any preconceived theory. Nor is it intended to obtain ‘evidence’ in a strictly scientific sense. What we seek is something more modest, though equally valuable: to observe whether consistent patterns emerge when different practitioners work following a common ritual structure.

To this end, a simple methodology has been designed. Each participant undertakes a contemplative practice based on the corresponding sigil, using a structured visualisation and subsequently recording their impressions, perceived symbols, emotional content and any significant elements that arise during the practice.

The underlying question is particularly interesting. If certain symbolic relationships possess genuine internal coherence, one would expect certain images, themes or experiences to appear repeatedly among different participants. Conversely, if the correspondences are arbitrary or incorrect, the results would tend to be more scattered and less consistent.

Naturally, this type of work lies somewhere between symbolic research, the psychology of the imagination and esoteric practice. The results should therefore be interpreted with caution. We do not seek to confirm pre-existing beliefs, but rather to observe what happens when a theoretical hypothesis is transferred to the realm of experience.

As the experiment progresses, we will publish observations and reflections arising from the process.

Perhaps the most valuable outcome is not the confirmation of a specific theory, but the opening up of new avenues for studying esoteric correspondences from a more experiential and less purely speculative perspective.

After all, any symbolic system claims to describe something about reality. And if that claim is true, it should be possible to explore it not only through texts and diagrams, but also through practice.

The Star in Aries, available from 21 June, sets out the theoretical framework that has given rise to this line of research. (https://www.amazon.es/dp/B0H3FN8CGN)

What if we have been looking in the wrong direction?

Of all the mysterious phrases in the Liber AL vel Legis, few have given rise to as many interpretations as the one that appears in the first chapter:

‘All these old letters of my Book are aright; but Tzaddi is not the Star. This also is secret: my prophet shall reveal it to the wise.’

For over a century, there has been debate as to what exactly Aiwass meant by these words. Entire books, commentaries, lectures and treatises have been written around a single sentence. However, something curious sometimes happens with texts we think we know well: we stop reading what they say and start reading what we expect to find in them.

Perhaps it is worth looking at the verse again with fresh eyes.

The usual interpretation understands these words as a correction of the traditional attribution of the Star. That is to say, it is assumed that the text is saying:

‘The Star is not Tzaddi.’

But that is not exactly what we read, the verse does not say:

The Star is not Tzaddi.

It says:

Tzaddi is not the Star.

It may seem a minor difference. Merely a change in the order of the words. However, sometimes a door opens precisely through a crack as small as that. Let us imagine an everyday situation; someone enters a room and says:

“Michael is not the doctor.”

The immediate reaction is usually to wonder who the doctor is. But the sentence was not talking about the doctor. It was talking about Michael.

The correction falls on Michael. It is he who has been misidentified.

Perhaps something similar is happening here.

For generations we have directed our attention towards the Star. We have tried to work out which card should occupy its place, which path corresponds to it, what modification Crowley intended to introduce. But perhaps the question posed by the verse is another.

Perhaps the question was never:

What is the Star?

Perhaps the question is:

What is Tzaddi?

The difference is small, but the landscape changes completely. Suddenly, the focus shifts away from Arcanum XVII and towards a specific Hebrew letter, towards its symbolism, its form, its function within the Tree and the currents of meaning that surround it.

And then the second part of the verse begins to take on a different nuance.

“This too is a secret.”

If it all boiled down to swapping two Tarot cards, it would be strange to speak of a secret reserved for the wise. Even stranger to announce a future revelation, a technical correction can be explained in a footnote. A secret is something else. A secret is not something that is corrected.

It is something that is discovered.

Perhaps that is why the phrase remains alive more than a hundred years later. Because it does not seem to close in on itself. It does not offer a definitive answer. Rather, it points in a direction.

Like a finger pointing towards a place we have not yet fully explored.

Tradition has devoted enormous effort to reinterpreting the Star. Yet the verse seems to point continually towards Tzaddi.

Tzaddi is not the Star. No, the Star is not Tzaddi; Tzaddi is not the Star.

And perhaps, hidden within that simple reversal, lies a part of the secret that still awaits revelation.

The Breath of the Ruach: The Mystery of the Twin Formulas ON and TzR

Note: This is a short extract from the book *The Star in Aries*, in which the original correspondences of He in Aries and Tzaddi in Aquarius are re-examined.

The Ruach, the intellect and the middle soul in the occult anatomy, is neither a rigid nor a uniform space. Its internal geography is constructed from tensions and reflections that sustain the very breath of the psyche. Within this living architecture, Hermetic Kabbalah and the Magic of the New Aeon reveal two operative currents that act as mirrors of one another: the twin formulas of ON and TzR.

These numerical and symbolic keys not only describe the movement of consciousness, but also provide the Adept with a precise map for inner alchemy.

ON (120): Expansion and the Solar Vault

The formula ON totals 120 through the sum of the letters Ayin (70) and Nun (50), corresponding to the arcana of The Devil (XV) and Death (XIII). In the geometry of the Tree of Life, this pair traces the upper triangle of the Ruach, linking the spheres of Netzach and Hod with the harmonic centre of Tiphereth.

ON represents the ascending current of expansion and openness. As the ‘key to the solar vault’, this energy acts by elevating desire and the rational mind towards higher consciousness, dissolving limiting forms in the process. It is the path for the soul to learn to die and be reborn, reconciling its instinctive forces with solar consciousness in the Beauty of Tiphereth.

TzR (290): The Narrowness and the Crucible of the Image

As an exact and necessary reflection of expansion, we find the descending formula of TzR, whose value of 290 arises from the union of Tzaddi (90) and Resh (200). These paths, governed by The Emperor (IV) —in his Aquarian manifestation within the restored Tree— and The Sun (XIX), form the lower triangle connecting Netzach and Hod with the subconscious foundation of Yesod.

The Hebrew root Tz-R evokes concepts of constriction, pressure and tribulation, but also of refinement and trial. It is the formula of psychic contraction.

Whilst ON dissolves, TzR concentrates and fixes; it compels impulses and mental clarity to incarnate under pressure within the matrix of Yesod, distilling clear symbols and imparting limit and form to the light.

The work of the Adept demands navigating this dynamic tension without breaking it.

ON opens perception and elevates consciousness.

TzR contracts energy, purifying it and giving it a structure useful for the Ruach.

It is impossible to sustain the liberating ascent of ON without having passed through the crucible and the formative pressure of TzR. Both formulas constitute the mirror-image pulse of the intellect: ON is the *Solve* that reveals and expands, whilst TzR is the *Coagula* that contracts and fixes.

For the True Will to manifest without distortion, the Initiate must master this alchemical breath. True Magic consists not merely in dissolving the ego in the fire of the spirit, but in possessing the capacity to structure that divine vision in the world of form. Mastery of ON and TzR is, ultimately, mastery of our own capacity to die in the light and be reborn as conscious architects of our reality.
