The Butler didn't do it! (Because there's no Butler)

Book 2: The Fatal Broth

A Homer Lockshels mystery

Chapter One: The Last Supper

"Good morning", - said Loyde.

"Hhuh... what? who? Ah, good morning", mumbled Lockshels, sitting absent-minded at his desk.

Now, ...pause! Let's take a troll break and give some people a moment to feel somehow "important"! I can already hear the naysayers warming up, ready to cry that I'm not describing the atmosphere, the room, the wallpaper, the number of atoms in the carpet fibres, and so on. Truth is, I could easily fill two or three pages with the exact shape of the walls, the precise distance of the table from the center of the chamber, even describing the colour palette of each painting hanging around the room. But I ask you, dear reader, ...does it really matter? No, really, does it??? This is not a script, and I have absolutely no expectation of it becoming a movie, so, ...keeping that in mind, I ask again: does it matter? Isn't it better to leave it to your imagination?

[Addendum (just in case IT DOES make it into a movie): It's a fairly big room with blue walls, covered in reproduction paintings. A large Persian rug sprawls across the middle, slightly off to the left; Lockshels' desk sits near the south wall, halfway between the window and the door, opposite a fireplace that doesn't give quite enough heat to chase away the cold trying to embrace the room.]

"What's up, detective?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, I see you're kinda... upset."

"Well, Loyde, if you must know, ...I had a very peculiar dream last night."

"You don't say!", replied Loyde, dragging a chair close to the desk, wearing the face of one ready to reach for the popcorn.

"I'm having them pretty often, lately. But this one... this was the cherry on top!"

"About our last case?"

"No, Loyde. It involves Quickdraw Homer."

"Quickdraw Homer, eh?", Loyde was barely hiding his giggles.

"Yes, him. But last night... well..."

"Yes... go on..."

"Well, Homer was riding his horse, when he got some... business to attend to. So he dismounted and went into the bushes..."

"Bushes... aha..."

"His horse casually wandered off and went into a nearby bar. And the bartender said..."

"'Why the long face?'!"

"No."

"No?"

"No. He said 'Whiskey?', and the horse said 'Yeah'. Then he said 'Ice?', and the horse replied 'Neigh'."

"Neigh! Ha ha ha! Hilarious. I bet you... I mean Quickdraw was laughing his boots off."

"No."

"Ah, right. He was probably worried, you know, looking for his horse..."

"Well, that's the thing, Loyde: I was the horse!"

"Aaahhh... hmmm... now that's a just a fantasy! You know horses have long..."

He felt Lockshels' eyes burning into him.

"... faces!"

"Yeah, Loyde, I'm aware of that!"

Lockshels and Loyde. What a duo! I told you about them! And now... What you mean you don't know ? Well, don't be a cheapskate, and buy my first novel! It's all in there! Yeah, you bet your bottom I'm plugging my first book! I need the money, I'm poor!

There was a knock on the door, and the sergeant dipped his head inside.

"Wanna hear something strange?"

"I doubt it will be stranger than what I just heard!", mumbled Loyde.

"What is it, sergeant?", asked Lockshels while giving Loyde the evil eye.

"Well, you remember Mr. Sellar, from that case a while back?"

"The one that was ready to sell even the pants off a nudist? Yes! What about him?"

"Well, it seems the time has come for him to buy, this time. A coffin, more precisely. He choked while eating in a restaurant."

"Where?"

"Not far from his shop. Me and a few boys are headed that way. Wanna come?"

"Loyde, you go bring that thing we spoke about, then meet me at the restaurant. The sergeant will radio in its location."

"Let's go !"

Next... you know those wide police station hallways, with their grand staircases, concrete balustrades, imposing double doors, and the ever-present fleet of police cars waiting outside to whisk officers away? Well, they used all of those to get to the restaurant, so I'll spare you the tedious details.

From across the street, Lockshels and the sergeant were admiring the restaurant... well, I said "admiring"... it was just a figure of speech.

"'Le chow dans la corner and be'", sighed Lockshels, putting the legendary-now cigar in his mouth.

"Wants to be 'and bed', but the 'd' was blown out by last February's winds," responded the sergeant, striking up his lighter and offering it to Lockshels.

"I wouldn't bother!", said Lockshels. "The damn thing won't light anyway!"

"Yeah... what a dump!", added the detective.

"Believe it or not, it is considered a posh place", came the sergeant's response.

"Oh, sorry! What a posh dump!", Lockshels corrected himself.

"And I think I... I... Achoo!", sneezed Lockshels loudly, sending his cigar like a projectile towards a passer-by.

The stranger, well dressed in his buttoned-well-over-the-nose woolly black coat, with a fedora covering almost the rest of his face, stopped, surprised. After looking at the fallen cigar for a few seconds, he bent down, picked it up, and returned it to the detective.

"Cheers for that, very ki... ki... Achoo!"

Another sneeze. The stranger nodded and silently went on his way.

"Strange, but very polite chap", said Lockshels, watching the departing silhouette.

"Yeah, poor guy. Probably has a slight LLD - Limb-length discrepancy!"

"Huh? How would you know that? And... how could you know that?", exclaimed Lockshels, surprised.

"Well, see how he limps slightly? I recognise this as my little brother suffers from it."

"Well, I never imagined you as Doctor Sergeant.", said Lockshels.

"Shall we?", he said, pointing towards the restaurant.

"We should certainly should!", answered the sergeant, as they started to cross the street.

Some feedback would be appreciated for this Alphabeticon :) Thank you

"A" is for "Apple", tasty and red

That hides in the trees, and they say

You'll learn all the letters, starting with it,

The Apple that gives us the "A".

"B" is for Bee, so busy and small,

Flying and working, you see,

Gathering nectar and giving us all

The "B" that is coming from Bee.

"C" is for Carrot, so orange and bright,

That grows in the ground like a tree,

Giving us health and some sweetness, and more

Bringing the nice letter "C".

"D" comes from Drum, sometimes so loud,

Setting the sound wild and free,

Speaking about the music we feel,

Telling us all what is "D".

"E" is an Elephant, roaming around,

Happy and proud as can be,

Showing its beauty, majestic and strong,

Bringing a new letter: "E".

"F" comes from Fox, fluffy and warm,

Ginger and smart, a hen-chicken chef,

Bringing us trickery, showing us speed,

Showing a new letter: "F".

"G"'s from a goose, honking away,

Trying to make us all see

Those eggs that it laid, there, near the pond,

The eggs and the new letter, "G".

"H" comes from Hippo, a magical beast,

That bathes in the lake half of day,

Hungry and slow, brings us the "H",

A new letter that you can say.

"I"’s from the Ivy that climbs up your house

To get to the sun, and not very shy,

Releasing its perfume, and no only that,

Teaching us all about "I".

Hi there, swell girls and boys. Please stop your scrolling for a second ...

... and land me your ears ...or eyes, in this particular case.

I started writing my second Homer Lockshels mystery, and I would really appreciate your opinions and/or criticism in regards to the beginning of the second novel, "Again, it wasn't the Butler! (Nope, still no Butler!)". Thank you. So, ... here goes:

- Good morning, - said Loyde

- Hhuh ... what ? who ? Ah, good morning, mumbled Lockshels, sitting absent at his desk.

- What's up, detective ?

- What do you mean ?

- Well, I see you're kinda ... upset.

- "Why the long face ?" !

- No.

- No ?

- No. He said "Whiskey ?" - and the horse said "Yeah". Then he said "Ice ?", and the horse responded "Neigh."

- Neigh! Ha ha ha ! Hilarious. I bet you ... I mean Quickdraw was laughing his boots off.

- No.

- Ah, right. He was probably worried, you know, looking for his horse...

- Well, that's the thing, Loyde: I was the horse!

---

The Kitchen clock chimed 3 in the night. Yes, it DID chime ! You weren't expecting this, were you ? Well, it seems Sunny put fresh batteries in it not so long ago. The house was soaked in a deep silence, and not even the cat could be heard snoring - he was probably out to his friend's bar mitzvah. A muffled crack could be heard though, coming from the front door, and the curved end of a crowbar slowly forced its way through a small gap.. The door creaked open, and a shadowy figure made its way inside.

Tired and maybe even hurt after a night-long tremendous fight with Colonel Whiskey, Quickdraw Homer was resting in a ditch by the dusty road. His trusty stead silently approached, bowed his head and gently shake Homer. No response. The horse tried again.

- Lockshels !

Lockshels moved a bit, mumbling.

- Lockshels, wake up ! - The horse tried again.

- What ? And how come you can talk ? - asked Lockshels, still half asleep.

- Well, I always talked. Since I was almost one.

His eyes opened wide, and he could see Loyde, slumped upon the bed.

- Loyde, what are you doing here ? How did you get in ?

- I'm sorry, detective. The neighbour noticed the door cracked open, with a busted lock, so he called the police.

- You mean, I've been burgled ? What did they take ? Is my family ok ? - erupted Lockshels, jumping to his feet.

- Don't worry, detective, everyone is alright. And, by the looks of it, nothing was stole either. Very strange. The thief must've been spooked by something before he could take anything.

- Aaahhh ... hmmm ... now that's a just a fantasy! You know horses have long... - he felt Lockshels eyes burning him - ... faces!

- Yeah, Loyde, I'm aware of that !

Lockshels and Loyde. What a duo! I told you about them! And now ... What you mean you don't know ? Well, don't be a cheapskate, and buy my first novel ! It's all in there ! Yeah, you bet your bottom I'm plugging my first book ! I need the money, I'm poor !

There was a knock on the door, and the sergeant dipped his head inside.

- Wanna hear something strange ?

- What is it, sergeant ?

- Well, you remember Mr. Sellar, from that case a while back ?

- The one that was ready to sell even the pants off a nudist ? Yes ! What about him ?

- Well, it seems the time has come for him to buy, this time. A coffin, more precisely. He choked while eating in a restaurant.

- Where ?

- Not far from his shop. Me and a few boys are headed that way. Wanna come ?

- Let's go !

The Butler didn't do it ! (Because there's no Butler) - A Homer Lockshels mystery - -- Excerpts

Chapter One: A last Tea Party

Rain. What a surprise ! It's raining ! Well, not really. This is England. They practically invented rain here. And rain had been falling over this little English town of Duneside since late afternoon. No, not the road-flooding evening-news-worthy kind of rain, but the persistent drizzle that was brewed and perfected in Britain over many centuries - a rain that wasn't really interested in getting people wet but rather just in reminding them it was there and won't go away that easily, even if it was midsummer.

---

The three ladies settled by the large bay window overlooking the rain-soaked street, and continued their small talk, but, as expected somehow, the conversation drifted naturally back to Gerard.

- He may be eighty-two, - Agnes declared, - but he's still the perfect bachelor.

- He's loaded, - Edna observed.

- What, he has a gun ? Is that even legal ??

Laughter.

- No, silly goose. He's loaded ! He has a lot of dough !

- He's a baker ??? I thought he was a colonel !

Louder lafter,

- He has mountains of money. Owns three houses.

- And no wife.

- Well, not yet ...

- Oh, Agnes ... my sweet Agnes and your dreams ...

------

- It's alright, poppet. Her poor ticker must have forgotten how to keep going. Now go and call an ambulance !

-------

Chapter Two: Simply Lockshels

Rain. Not a surprise ! Not anymore ! It IS England, after all ! Truth be told, it had quieted down a bit, but nevertheless it was still falling ! Only now, the street was lit not only by lightning, but also by the flashing colours of ambulance and police sirens. And silence. An almost eerie silence, interrupted only by the cadence of the falling raindrops. Suddenly, footsteps. And some faint splashes, shortly followed by a muffled muttering, most likely comming from the one whose shoes made the splashes. A figure appeared in the night: trench coat, covering a swanky brown suit - no tie - and a fedora, successfully failing to cover a long extinguished cigar hanging from our hero's mouth. He stopped. Two fingers went for the cigar, removing it from his mouth. - What now ? - he muttered, raising his eyes to the building in front. He tutted, and then he started crossing the street.

- Oh, figures ! No lift ! Well, that's life ! - he sighed, beginning to climb the stairs to the second floor, where all the hubbub was.

- Ah, detective Lockshels. I didn't know someone called you this late at night, sir.

- Nevermind, Loyde, I'm here now. But - and I know this will bug you, so I'll better put your mind at ease: no one called me, I just happened to be in the area. What seems to be the problem here ?

Loyde and Lockshels. What a duo. They even share a capital letter ! Old friends, their bond forged in the fire of Duneside's crime-fighting, they are bound to find themselves together most of the times. There's even a myth at the station, stating that Loyde is in fact Lockshels's shadow. Yes, his literal shadow. There is no Loyde without Lockshels, and, apparently, the other way around. Which is a little odd, considering they have almost opposite characters: Loyde, a fun loving man, not one to shy away from a good prank or joke, a bit quick to jump to conclusions, taking life as it comes and trying to, some say, rest his brain as much as possible. And Lockshels, not quite the heart of a party, always calculated, always questioning everything with even a hint of doubt woven into it ... and, yet, they made a fantastic pair, together solving too many cases deemed unsolvable ...

- Oh, there's nothing here. Just, you know, human nature ... we live, we die ... well, the latter, in this case ...

- Did he do that, or was he "helped" to do that, Loyde ?

- You mean she !

- I beg your pardon ?

-------

Chapter three: That's good chemistry !

- Oh, no ! Not again, Wellington ! You threw a shoe again ! And now we have to go to the blacksmith, and you know damn well how I hate listening to his stories !

An eagle screeched high up above Lockshels Ranch, making Homer to look up from the horse's hoof. Almost like in a slow replay, his index finger raised, pushing up on his ten-galon hat. On the horizon he saw a ball of dust, getting closer and closer.

- Now what in tarnation ... - he exclaimed, but waited calmly until the dust cluster approached and stopped a few meters in front of him. A gentle breeze dispersed the dust, and he could see Loyde dismounting his steed.

- Howdy, partner - said Loyde. - I came to get my fair share.

- But I thought you've already got your share yesterday.

- No, no, no. I'll say it again, maybe you have dust in your ears and didn't hear me well: I came to get my FAIR share.

- Now wait a minute here, Loyde. That there is greed, and you know well what the Good Book says about greed. Now, what you have to say for yourself, Loyde ?

- Well, to that I say Ring-Ring.

- Pardon me ?

- Ring-Ring.

- You must take me for a foo...

- Ring-Ring.

His eyes opened wide, but his body wouldn't move. Ring-Ring, continued the telephone, relentlesly.

With a swift move, he reached the phone and picked it up.

- Howdy, partner. Quickdraw Homer on the horn here.

- Huh ?

- What you ... I mean you reached detective Lockshels, sergeant. What is it ?

- Yes. Yes. So fast ? Marvelous. I'll be down at the station in a minute.

----------

Chapter four: Recorded reality show (15 seconds of fame)

---------

He finally appeared from the back.

- Mr. Sellar, I need your daughter's phone !

- Huh ???

- What he's trying to say - intervened Loyde - is that WE need your daughter's phone.

- Huh ???

- Sorry for the missunderstanding, sir - said Lockshels - what we mean is that your daughter was possibly filming something that was out of your camera's range. And we need your daughter's phone to get the footage.

- Ah, I see.

- Well ?

- Yes, I'm fine, thank you. How about you ?

- Can we have it ?

- Have what ?

- The phone ! - Lockshels and Loyde said in unison with irritaded voices.

- Well, I don't think she wants to sell it ...

- Look, Mr. Sellar, - Lockshels approached him calmly, - this is a police investigation. Now, of course I could obtain a warrant and cordon this shop of for ... I dunno ... maybe ... three days ? (he looked at Loyde, who noded in a VIP manner) ... but we really don't want that, now do we ?

- No, no we don't.

- So, if you would be so kind to call Charlotte here so we can have a few words. Would that be too much of a bother ?

- No, no. No botter at all !

- Charlotte ! Charlotte love !

- What do you want ?

- Can you come out here for a second ?

- Now ???

- Preferably, sweetheart.

Charlotte appeared from behind the curtain.

- Oh, you again.

- What ???

- These nice policemen ...

- My name is Lockshels. Detective Lockshels. And we have strong reasons to believe you have footage on your phone that may be vital for one of our cases. Can I borrow your phone for a limited period of time ?

- Dude, are you high ? I am NOT giving you my phone !

- But Charlotte, honey, they are the police ...

- They can be the Klingons, the're still not getting my phone !

- Miss Charlotte ... can I call you that ?

- Whatever.

- I propose to you a trade-off. How about you NOT giving us your phone, but instead letting me see what footage you have, and sending it to my personal email ?

- I'm not showing you my "footage", or whatever you call it ! Eww !

- You might misunderstand me. I don't want everything. I just need what you filmed a couple of days ago inside this store.

- You mean the jar movies ?

- Yes, the "jar movies".

- Nah, you can have them.

- Thank you.

- But what's in it for me ?

------------

Chapter Five: One-and-half Houdini

- Good night. See you tomorrow.

"Hey, that was pretty impressive" - thought Lockshels while going to the bathroom. What followed, I think you know. Changing, brushing the teeth, having a shower, bla bla bla. I guess by now you are accostumized with all those bed preparation rituals, so I won't go too deep into that,

The Kitchen clock chimed 3 in the night. Or at least it would've, if someone would've changed its batteries. The house was soaked in a deep silence, except a loud snoring, coming from the main bedroom. No, it wasn't Lockshels. His breath was as smooth and silent as a gentle summer breeze over a field. Same could have been said for his missus. But not for the family cat, sleeping under the bed.

Suddenly Lockshels just stood up in the bed, at a perfect 90 degrees angle. He didn't make a sound, his eyes wide open, his brain gears rotating frantically.

- What's the matter, honey ? Did you feel a spider in your pants ? - asked Mrs. Lockshels turning half asleep on the other side.

- I ... I got it - Lockshels said, triumphantly.

- Good. Now kill it, and go back to sleep. And let's hope he didn't bit anything important down there - said the missus, turning sleepily.

"No ! I have to ... I have to .... nooo ! Could it ??? No !" and he got up and went to the kitchen, taking the phone with him. He dialed a number, and impatiently waited to ring. A couple of times, maybe a bit too long.

- Loyde. Wake up ! I think I have it !

- No, I didn't lost it !!! Haven't you been listening ? I have it, not lost it ! And yes, I know what time it is !

- Have the boys from the lab analyze the dispenser again. Yes, I know they did. But this time, analyze its structure. And compare it with the other dispenser.

- Remember, they have to do this first thing tomorrow morning !

- What ? Today is tomorrow ? But what happened to today then ? It was yesterday ??? Hello ? Hello ???

"Well, I better go back to sleep." - muttered Lockshels. "Well, at least the cat stopped snoring". And he went back to bed.

Chapter Six: So, the Butler did it, after all !

..... Even Lockshels's cigar kamikadzed from his mouth, and it was now on the floor !

Two days passed then. How ? When ? Well, nobody knows ! And ... what ? what happened ? The days passed, will you leave it at that ??? Thank you !!

So, as I was saying, two days past. Edna was still under heavy guard in her hotel room, awaiting her trial. Mildred was probably at home, watching "Cash in the attic" and recovering from her pretty blunt experience. Sellar was still ... well ... Sellar, still trying to sell everything that didn't move to anyone that moved. Charlotte opened her own "Youtube" channel, taking all kind of videos, waiting for another antreprenorial opportunity. The cat still snored, and Spinny McRubbish was still refusing to function. Oh, and the cigar ... still extinguished, was resting in the top drawer.
