Olympus and Nikon / Black and Chrome

Olympus and Nikon / Black and Chrome

After a recent purge of my collection, I’m now a little bit richer 😅 and I get to appreciate the cameras that I have left.

Rangefinder and SLR. Olympus 35 SP and the original Nikon FM with a set of compact Chrome Series E lenses: 35, 50 and 135mm.

Still debating whether I should keep or sell the 135mm and get the more versatile 100mm instead 😄

Coffee drip bags in synthetic material. Should I be worried?

I pur a pack of 100 drip bags from Amazon to use on my camping holiday. Unfortunately they came in a plastic bulk packaging, only the importers name and the Chinese manufacturer. I thought these would be made from a paper cellulose material but it seems to be an unwoven PET plastic bag.

I have health concerns using these. There are no included safety labels or anything that might indicate this is food safe. It sure isn’t biodegradable.

Am I overthinking this?

What if you would take bulk supermarket arabica green beans and actually roast them well

I love specially coffee. No special or funky blends, just a straight good coffee. But prices are increasing. I’ve always wondered. If you were to take green beans that many supermarkets sell but don’t roast the crap out of them. Wouldn’t they taste better?

Nut spatrand douchebak

Should I buy it? Is this a good deal?

Seller wants €75. Shipping will set me back another €10. Description says “Light signs of wear”. Good deal?

Is this the F1.8 or the F1.4? I can’t read it anymore.

Got this with a Zeiss Nettar

How cool is this! never came across something like it.

The German instructions say:

Exposure Counter

Instructions for Use

Set the upper numbered disc so that the center arrow points to the arrow marker.

Then read the corresponding number from Table 1. Insert a finger, pencil, or matchstick into the hole corresponding to that number and turn the numbered disc clockwise until it stops.

Repeat the same procedure with the numbers found in Tables 2–5.

The window will then display the exposure time in seconds corresponding to the selected aperture.

Important: The arrow is only aligned at the beginning. After that, the numbered disc is always turned further clockwise.

Flaking paint Ikonta M

I got an Ikonta M that has some peeling paint inside. The black paint on the outsides was already removed by the previous owner.

I’ve watched enough YT videos of people spray painting their cameras to know better.

I mainly want to avoid internal reflections. I’ve thought about taping the inside with black tape. Or seeing if the back from a cheaper Nettar would fit.

I’ve also considered using black tape on the exposed metalic rails on the front. Or maybe that stuff the wrap cars with. Any other ideas?

What is next

Sooo... I've been on this crazy journey for two years now. It started with buying vintage gear online and seeing it had issues, then trying to repair it.

It started with light seals. Then opening lenses to clean fungus. Then helicoid cleaning. Rangefinder adjustments. Then custom leatherette cutting/creation. Opened up a TLR to fix focusing issues.

Yesterday I successfully reassembled a free Domiplan lens I got from someone that had totally botched it. No markings at all, wrong helicoid path, missing springs. I manage to get it perfectly working again, I even removed the aperture blades, gave them a soak and reassembled them (first time).

But where does it go from here? I once opened a shutter on a TLR because slow speeds weren't working. Some drops of Isopropanol actually did the magic. A full shutter disassembly really scares the sh!t out of me though...

Since I really enjoy the tinkering, can I start doing this for other people as well? When I said I did "basic" repairs myself at my lab, they were more than eager to write me down as another reference for their customers. I just don't know if I can work on someone else's gear.

I also don't have gear like collimators, etc. I just use makeshift things like a focus screen I tape in place to calibrate focus, etc.

Create new plastic window for Yahica Mat LM lightmeter

I'm currently restoring a Yashica Mat LM. Unfortunately the little plastic transparent of the (still working) light meter is gone. Is there a way to recreate a plastic for this? Without too much equipment (I can't do thermoforming). Options I'm currently looking at is using a thick piece of transparent plastic from a PET bottle. Or 1.5mm acrylic sheet and score it to make 90° angles. It's doming a bit (the original) so that'll be a challenge though.

A week ago I bought this Rolleiflex 2.8 E3 quite impulsively. Mainly because the price was only €385.

Upon inspection, I saw the aperture blades weren’t closing. So it needs a CLA/repair. I’ve asked around and it’ll probably set me back anywhere between €250-350 (shipping costs included).

Is this device worth that? Seen the general condition it’s in?

I actually had a chance of heart, because I realized that I wouldn’t feel comfortable shooting expensive TLRs. I shot €100 Yashica’s in the past. But even the thought of taking this one out gives me stress. I’d rather have three disposable cameras.

So I’m really debating to sell this one again to get my money back. Or do I get it repaired and then sell it?
