RCB sale is a good lesson in investing: don't judge decisions using hindsight
Many people now say Diageo sold RCB too early.
RCB won in 2025, got sold, and then won again in 2026. In hindsight, holding for one more year would have increased the valuation further.
But business decisions aren't made with hindsight.
When they sold, they knew:
RCB had just won its first title.
Brand value was at an all-time high.
Buyers were willing to pay a premium.
RCB was a non-core asset.
Could valuation have gone higher? Yes.
Could RCB have had a poor 2026 season and seen its valuation stagnate? Also yes.
Business isn't about maximizing every last rupee of upside. It's about taking the right decision with the information available at that time.
Same lesson applies to stocks: a stock going up after you sell doesn't automatically mean selling was the wrong decision.
What do you think, did Diageo make the right capital allocation decision, or did they leave too much money on the table?
Also, if you see the same image and post caption on X (Twitter), that's me only. I didn't take credit for someone else's work. 😊
