Celtic Handfasting Ceremony in Ireland: Unique Ritual Ideas for Your Elopement

Celtic Handfasting Ceremony in Ireland: Unique Ritual Ideas for Your Elopement

Have you thought about including a Celtic handfasting ceremony in your Ireland elopement? 💚

It’s one of the most meaningful Irish wedding traditions we see couples choosing when they travel to Ireland to elope. During the ceremony, the couple’s hands are gently tied together using ribbons or cords to symbolize unity and commitment — which is where the phrase “tying the knot” is believed to come from.

We’re also seeing couples include:
✨ Irish whiskey ceremonies
✨ Tea ceremonies
✨ Unity candles
✨ Wishing stone rituals
✨ Sand ceremonies
✨ Ring warming ceremonies

These symbolic rituals can make your Ireland elopement ceremony feel even more personal, emotional, and connected to Ireland’s traditions and scenery.

We just published a full blog all about Celtic handfasting ceremonies and unique wedding rituals couples can include in their Ireland elopement or destination wedding. 💚

Would you include a handfasting ceremony in your wedding day?

Flying to Ireland with a Wedding Dress or Suit? Here Are Some Things Couples Should Know

One thing a lot of destination wedding and elopement couples stress about is flying internationally with their wedding dress and groom’s suit.

After helping couples travel to Ireland for years, these are probably the biggest tips we’d give:

• Carry your wedding dress onboard if possible
• Use a proper garment bag
• Contact the airline beforehand about hanging space
• Avoid checking wedding attire into luggage unless absolutely necessary
• Steam/pressing services are available in Ireland if things wrinkle during travel
• Suit rental in Ireland is actually easier than many international couples expect

We’ve also seen couples debate whether shipping a wedding dress ahead is safer than bringing it themselves — there are definitely pros and cons to both.

We recently put together a full guide with airline tips, packing advice, garment bag suggestions, dress steaming options in Ireland, and general travel advice for destination wedding couples.

Here’s the full guide if anyone is planning something similar.

Traveling to Ireland from the USA or Canada for a Wedding or Elopement? Here Are Some Helpful Tips

My partner and I work with a lot of couples traveling to Ireland from North America for elopements and destination weddings, and there are a few things people are always surprised by before arriving here.

Some of the biggest ones:

• You generally don’t need a visa for a short trip to Ireland
• Irish weather changes FAST (even in summer)
• Renting a car is usually the best way to explore outside Dublin
• Driving on the left becomes normal quicker than most people expect
• If getting legally married in Ireland, you do NOT need to arrive 3 months early

We’ve also noticed many couples underestimate:

  • travel times in rural Ireland
  • how early sunset gets in winter
  • and how useful layers/waterproof shoes are 😅

We recently put together a full guide covering:

  • airports
  • car rentals
  • weather by season
  • payment/currency tips
  • phones/data
  • wedding travel advice
  • and general Ireland travel tips for USA & Canadian visitors

Full guide here if helpful.

Hey everyone,

We’ve just shared a new real same-sex wedding on the Eloping in Ireland blog and wanted to share it here too as it’s such a special one.

Brittney & Justine traveled over to Ireland and chose Hags Head at the Cliffs of Moher for their ceremony — a quieter, more intimate spot with incredible views. Afterward, they celebrated in a traditional Irish pub with dinner, drinks, and live music… exactly the kind of relaxed, fun atmosphere so many couples are looking for.

It’s a great example of how simple, personal, and meaningful an elopement in Ireland can be — while still feeling like a proper celebration. We loved being part of bringing this day together.

If you’re looking for ideas or just want to see how it all came together, you can check out the full story here.

Would you go for a cliffside ceremony like this or something different for your day?
