MLA format and general grammar/writing resources

I’m currently taking an English course at a nearby community college. I’m doing it while I’m in the military so I’m balancing it with a job and I really need to get straight A’s on this course because when I leave the military, I really and get into my dream school however the problem is I’ve been out of school for three years and besides military training, I haven’t been in I feel like it would be a little bit easier going in person, but doing online is the only thing I can do because of my job. I just feel so lost with all this does anyone have any really good resources to just improve writing?

Why do some cheerleaders choose All-Star cheerleading instead of high school and collegiate sideline cheering

I didn’t grow up doing cheerleading. In fact, I played many other sports in school, and I’m starting to get into cheer so that I can do sideline cheer in college. I knew All-Star cheerleading was always a thing, and my friends and I always joked that, no matter what, they'd win the world or national championship every year. We had a bunch of girls in my high school who were involved in All-Star cheerleading and wouldn’t touch the high school cheer team with a 10-foot pole. A lot of those cheerleaders actually never go on to do it in college, apparently, and they either stick with All-Star cheerleading or stop altogether. I mean, I’m a big sports guy, and I love the whole aspect of the sideline, especially since I can still be a student athlete and cheer on all the sports. Is there a reason why some girls blatantly choose All-Star over collegiate or high school

Everything is idolatry

I never understood how Evangelicals accused us of idol worship from something so small like a prayer cards to the Notre Dame Golden Dome I've heard it all.

but how come the way they treat the American flag, the president (who they just made and “blessed” a golden ND style statue of), the GOP, firearms, mainstream media, Israel, SEC football, the NFL, their relatives and their pastors not considered idolatry?

How to pray the liturgy of the hours?

I debated starting to pray the liturgy of the hours, especially since it was recommended to me, since I work a job that sometimes prevents me from going to Sunday mass. The only thing is I don't know where to start or how to do it.

Being Catholic during the satanic panic

For those that don’t know, in the 80s, 90s, and even into the 2000s, the satanic panic was like a widespread collective thought that everything unfamiliar or new was of the devil (like the mom in the Water Boy said). Common things that would be considered satanic were rock music, Dungeons & Dragons, Harry Potter (those who saw Jesus camp know), anything gothic, anything with magic, and even in some places, Catholicism. Being Catholic my entire life, I never really saw this major fear of the devil. Usually, whenever Catholics would say something would be satanic, it would be like actual worship of the devil, not something we don’t understand/like. Still, again, this is just what I experienced. I’ve seen that some radical Catholic groups are almost like evangelical Christians. I don’t know if something like this was something that they did.

When I moved down south to the Bible Belt, I really saw what they meant. It still happens down there. One of the funniest things I remember is that during Halloween (which they consider a pagan holiday, by the way), they would have these things called Hell houses, which were basically haunted houses. Still, instead of monsters scaring you, it would be sin, they would show scenes of people engaging in different “sins” from drinking alcohol, listening to rock music, gambling, and even once g#y interacial s#x and my friends and I remember we would always just go to them and laugh at how ridiculous they were. But they still do think Catholics are of the devil. I’ve had many people that I’ve worked with throw that accusation out at me. But I would love to know if anyone alive during that time remembers if, as Catholics, it was a thing or if this was more of just a crazy evangelical thing.

How do Catholic families with many kids do it?

I was never really raised in that kind of world. I was raised in a family where having three kids was a lot. But then I’ve seen some Catholic families that have 8, 9, or up to 12 kids. I mean, I even dated a girl once who was one of nine. I thought having more kids was more of a forgotten art. Usually, when I think of religious people having lots of kids, I think of Muslims, hardcore Jewish groups. I mean, a lot of people nowadays aren’t even having any kids. It’s because it’s so expensive that many people can’t even afford to buy a home. I was always told that the hard-core Jewish communities live extremely simple lives and almost take vows of poverty to afford that many kids live extremely simple lives and almost take vows of poverty to afford that many kids. I mean, most of the people I see having that many kids aren't CEOs or in crazy-high-paying jobs; usually, they don’t even work, and they’re all homeschooled. I can’t comprehend how people do it. I want to have that many kids, and as weird as it sounds, I kinda don’t wanna take a vow of poverty like that. I still wanna have a decent amount of kids, but I do want to enjoy life with them and not financially struggle

Ideas for a parish's young adults group (18-39)

I was put in charge of my local cathedral's young adult groups, which are for people 18-39. It really is a shame that many churches don't take advantage of this age group because I've seen evangelical churches spearhead this, and many people flock to those churches for things like worship nights. I've taken some inspiration from St. Joe's in NYC, but I'm still at a loss. It's hard to come up with things people in their 30s would want to do that kids in college would want to do.

Why doesn’t the church do anything about infidelity at Catholic universities?

It really pains me that the state of major Catholic universities is in. Having pro LGBT/choice groups on campus, celebrating Pride Month instead of the Sacred Heart, having non-Catholic professors that enforce this behavior, most students are not Catholic, and the ones that are don't practice, selling contraceptives on campus, having a party/hookup scene, and treating faithful Catholics as a disease. I used to be a long-time defender of Notre Dame. Still, I can’t do it anymore; I find myself wishing they would act like AMU, FUS, or Christendom, rather than do whatever they want and watch them for the football team. I've gotten into heated arguments with alumni about church teachings, and despite them wanting to preach “tolerance and acceptance,” that goes out the window when you bring up being a faithful Catholic. But I question why the church disregards this? Why don't we cut them off and focus more on faithful schools or demand change?

I know we can look at Jesus the apostles and the other saints going out into a world of people that would torment persecute and even martyr them, but it's hard when it's going into something that's supposed to be catholic

What is a Bible collage/ministry school

To me it seems to be mostly an evangelical Protestant thing. As Catholics we have many carholic universities (some more faithful then others) but they are similar to regular colleges with a religious environment and religious classes, not to mention only very few study religion full time and those are men going into the seminary to become priests. I was also told that these are extremely small uncredited schools alot of wich are run by huge pastors like Joel olstein and Kenneth Copeland, so why go to something uncredited instead of a regular state school for cheap and a degree with credit. I just don't understand it So explain it to a Catholic what a a Bible collage/ministry school is

I feel like Chaplain’s are so misused and under utilized

I talked with a buddy of mine that served in the army and is going through the Chaplain process through a seminary and he was telling me how utilize they are in any other branches. they go deployments with them. They get underway on ships and sometimes they’re one of the most loved people associated with the unit. It’s almost night and day in the Coast Guard. I feel like in the Coast Guard they barely are even allowed to do their jobs religiously they do is act like social workers, which may be fine for some, but I doubt many of these guys be social workers, and all they do is act like social workers, which may be fine for some, but I doubt many of these guys wanna be social workers. majority of the fleet is probably not religious but even in the other branches non-religious people love their Chaplain it still just feels kind of weird how in the Coast Guard they really don’t do much compared to the Navy the army.

I don’t think enough people realize the Sisters of Aquinas are sedevacantists

I keep seeing them everywhere in my Instagram feed. And people keep talking about how they are so traditional so orthodox and that all Catholic schools should be like the one they run and how they are so faithful, but yet they are all sedevacantist. For some reason I feel sedevacantism to slowly become more common, especially because the church by large will not embrace, traditional liturgies and sedevacantists and other schismatic groups take advantage of this

Catholic colleges host LGBTQ graduation ceremonies, including one with drag show

why is it always the Jesuit schools? almost every single one of these schools are Jesuit Georgetown, Gonzaga, the University of San Francisco, Boston College, College of the Holy Cross, Fordham, Fairfield University, Marquette, Xavier, Seattle University, Saint Louis University, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara University, St. John's, Albertus Magnus College, St. Mary's College of California, Regis University, Siena Heights University, St. Thomas University and Our Lady of the Lake University.

I know a lot of people give a lot of crap to the university of call them compromised or woke but you don’t see things like this happening there and if there is something of that nature there is major pushback from student students, faculty, and alumni. I could attest to I could attest to that, like when they wanted to appoint a pro abortion Prof to a position leadership and students, faculty, priests, seminarians, alumni and several bishops were enraged by this and they dropped it

What’s the game you will remember for the rest of your life and you’ll be telling your grandkids about

for me, I got two when we played Penn State in the playoffs almost all of my family were Penn State fans and I’m the only Notre Dame fans growing up. They always made subtle jabs about how I was the weird one being a ND fan.

The other one was in 2020 when we beat number one ranked Clemson in double overtime I remember I was a freshman in high school and just starting to take Notre Dame football seriously I remember staying up until one in the morning to watch that game

Even though it’s probably never gonna happen because EA is notorious for never doing anything to improve their games. Everywhere I look on my Instagram feed. It’s those AI-generated videos of what college football would look like if it had an open world like NBA 2K's My Player mode.

To me, it would be pretty cool, but it just seems incredibly hard, especially if it were to be done right. I mean, they would technically have to account for every single college team's campus, which would be awesome, especially for those known for beautiful campuses, like the University of Notre Dame, Stanford, or BYU. But some of these schools are absolutely massive, and how they would have to completely tailor everything around each specific university, which even for a normal game company that cares a lot is a lot of work

Things that will force you to renlist or extend

I'm more than a year off from my terminal date, and I'm going off to school. One of my biggest fears is that they are going to pull the rug out from under me and make me extend or even renlist. I know A school is one of them and I already had to extend an extra month for that. I was also told that C school (like BO school) would also cause that.

like many people I’m overjoyed at the amount of people that are converting over to Catholicism from other Christian denominations or even other religions entirely but there is one thing I started to notice with a lot of them and that is that they bring over a lot of bad habits from their domination that isn’t really a thing

From theological things like sola scriptula, the heresy of Americanism and charatismaticism. to other things like being anti alcahol, seeing sex (within marriage) as a shameful thing, and hating all non CCM music

so it’s not a secret that this guy is an extremist (This is coming from a conservative), he has suddenly taken a lot of hits at Catholics and his pastor is a extreme anti-catholic that advocated for persecuting Catholics and he has made it explicitly clear in the past few weeks that Catholics are not welcome in his military

many people that are not fans of him, pointing out his tattoos. Too many Catholics, a lot of these seem like familiar symbols. Deus Vult, the Latin Cross and the giant Jerusalem cross on his chest. even though he is an extremist, these symbols are not extremest symbols. They’re Catholic symbols. But the weird thing is to me is why does he have these tattoos of Catholic symbols despite not being a catholic and openly attacking Catholics? Is he LARPing and thinks he is a Knight/Crusader?
