Something I’ve noticed about my inner critic is that it doesn’t just appear — it sounds extremely convincing.
Like after a normal conversation, my brain suddenly starts replaying everything: “Why did you say that?” or “That probably sounded dumb.” Even when nothing actually went wrong.
For a long time I assumed the problem was my confidence. But recently I learned that the real reason this voice feels so powerful has more to do with how our attention locks onto certain thoughts.
Once I understood that, the whole thing started making a lot more sense.
