Almost Tariff-Proof Grocery Guide
Budget Bytes just released a new resource on frugal grocery shopping. It includes the following three top tips:
- Kick the Can: Steel tariffs make canned beans and tomatoes costly. Swap them for dry bagged beans, frozen items, or boxed cartons.
- Go Domestic: Choose U.S.-grown produce, domestic store-brand pasta, and local cheeses to completely bypass tariffs.
- Pivot Proteins & Produce: Trade tariff-heavy beef and imported shrimp for eggs, chicken, or dry beans. Swap pricey imported veggies (like Mexican tomatoes) for budget-friendly domestic produce like zucchini.
They've also recosted three old recipes from 2024 with advice on how to make them as affordable as possible with ingredient swaps in 2026.
Affordability Dashboard - Economic Security Project (USA)
New interactive tool just launched from the Economic Security Project. You can track several costs around housing (mortgages, rent), food (bacon, coffee), bills (car insurance, electricity), health care (ACA, childcare) and more. I like the options to put things into historical context by selecting "pre-COVID" and "since January 2025", there's a limited amount of stats per state, and you can do some comparisons.
Trawling and bycatch: The fishing issues in Alaska’s Senate race
- The practice of trawling has come under fire from members of the public, fishermen, lawmakers, tribal leaders, and environmentalists. They point to concerns about trawling bycatch and the impact trawling has on the Alaskan fishing industry, the health of the state’s waters and local economies.
- The issue has made national headlines in the race for the Alaska Senate seat now held by Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. Mary Peltola, the Democratic candidate running against Sullivan, became the first Alaska Native member of Congress after winning the state’s only U.S. House seat in a special election in 2022. Peltola’s House campaign largely centered around salmon and addressing bycatch.
- Critics of Sullivan have gone after the senator for accepting contributions from the trawling industry, which federal data shows has given about $280,000 to Sullivan since he took office in 2015. Trawl industry executives and an industry political action committee made contributions totaling about $10,000 to Peltola after she was elected to the House in 2022, according to Alaska Public Media. This year, Peltola received $500 from a trawling industry executive but is returning that contribution, according to reporting from Alaska Public Media.
Contractor alleges Army inappropriately used AI to make $450M contract award
- The Army used AI that hallucinated multiple times, creating the false impression that Trax’s bid was weaker than rival Southwest Range Services’ successful bid of roughly $450 million, a complaint filed in late July alleged.
- Contractors will likely continue to scrutinize federal agencies’ use of AI in evaluating bids, according to David Timm, a partner at Burr & Forman.
- “More bid protests are likely to come as the ungoverned and undisclosed use of GenAI tools results in errors throughout the procurement, but if agencies do not comply with the [Office of Management and Budget] rules it will complicate how contractors prove their allegations,” Timm wrote in the op-ed.
New York Essential Plan Users Worry: Am I Losing Coverage?
Direct consequences of the Republican Tax Law (H.R.1). Millions losing insurance, hospitals closing, and health care costs rising to pay for tax breaks for the rich.
Half a million New Yorkers will lose healthcare in July - Hospitals are at risk too
Almost half a million people on New York’s Essential Plan could lose healthcare this week.
More are likely to be cut off from Medicaid because of stricter work requirements starting in January. Both are the result of changes from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law last summer.
Some healthcare experts are warning that dozens of hospitals in New York are at risk of closing.

Beautiful house. Unfortunately, the finished basement's celling, which has a bedroom, kitchen, and full bath, is under 6ft tall, which makes it unusable for many, and at this price range is wild.

A D.C. Community Park Story
Hi all!
Thought I’d share something joyful in the middle of all the difficult news our city has been dealing with lately.
Several years ago, our community decided enough was enough with the state of our alley. What was once filled with abandoned cars, trash, illicit activity, overgrown weeds, mud, and potholes has been transformed through thousands of volunteer hours and generous financial support from neighbors and local nonprofits.
Together, we turned a neglected space into a community space with swings and toys for kids, a Little Free Library, native plant gardens, space for events like the annual Alleyween, and more.
It’s been incredibly heartwarming to see new faces every week enjoying the space and the sense of community that’s grown around it.
Enjoy and Happy Friday!
Rally organized by Michigan Families for Fair Care outside a gas station in Macomb County which is represented by Rep. John James who is supporting the war in Iran. Last year he cut Medicaid, SNAP, and clean energy tax credits to pay for tax breaks for billionaires. Healthcare, utilities, rent, groceries, everything is getting more expensive.
Does anyone else find it gross how Tom Tiffany is trying to rebrand as moderate when he’s obviously still MAGA? Scott Pressler is a Stop the Steal activist.
- MAGA-endorsed Tom Tiffany is trying to rebrand as a mainstream Republican in his bid for governor, all while he continues to court the far-right fringe. Tiffany appeared on “TheQuartering,” a podcast hosted by Jeremy Hambly, an internet personality with a documented history of antisemitic rhetoric and online harassment controversies.
- During the interview, Hambly offered to mobilize campaign support for Tiffany alongside Scott Presler, a prominent “Stop the Steal” activist.
- Presler was a key figure in efforts to overturn the 2020 election and has helped amplify conspiracy-driven movements, including QAnon-aligned networks.
- One of the lawmakers is Rep. Jen Kiggans, a former Navy helicopter pilot who represents a coastal district in Virginia where an $11.5 billion wind farm is expected to create 1,000 jobs. Her support for an initiative targeted by Trump shows the scrambled politics of clean energy in an election year where Republicans are at risk of losing the House.
- For now, the Virginia project is back on track, along with the other four, because of federal court rulings. But Elaine Luria, a former congresswoman who is seeking the Democratic nomination in the 2nd Congressional District represented by Kiggans, said the incumbent’s efforts have been futile in the face of Trump’s onslaught. “Her advocacy did nothing,” Luria said. Kiggans did not respond to requests for comment.
- Kiggans voted in favor of Republican legislation to gut clean energy tax credits as part of Trump’s sweeping tax and spending bill even though she has long portrayed herself as a champion of renewable energy. Democrats have turned the issue into campaign advertisements, and Luria said it undermines Kiggans’ attempt to “sell herself as if she’s a moderate.”
