I am a new grad that started in an outpatient neurology practice in the beginning of the new year. It’s a very small practice just me and doc in terms of providers. I would like to know if my experience is something potentially shady which I’m starting to think might be but I need others’ opinions.
I walk in and round on infusion patients. Fine easy. Document what they say. Order labs if needed.
I’m slowly I mean very slowly building a caseload. I am lucky if I see 1-2 patients per day. If I have nobody on my schedule, I go in on the doctor’s appointments. In the beginning, it was to learn and what not. Now it’s becoming helping out with a decent amount of notes that aren’t even mine.
When I do have patients particularly new patients, since I am somewhat new still, he has them follow up with him for the first follow up. Taking away my caseload. The training in terms of growing to do new cases besides headaches is very minimal. I was asked by the doc if I wanted to learn Botox and if I was ready. I said I was and he got up mid conversation and didn’t finish it when he got back.
He critiques my notes, which I’m fine with but it has become too nit picky. For instance, “don’t put neck range of motion put range of motion at the neck joint.” Or “side effect profile is not for a person’s reaction to something it only relates to the medication itself.” I take notes on what he likes but it becomes hard to remember everything. With telephone tasks, documents, e-refill requests, he has it sent only to me unless there are specific things that are out of my scope. I am getting concerned that I am really only going to be treated as an assistant.
