Geelong short play festival

I had an awesome experience yesterday attending the Geelong Short Play Festival. It was my first time experiencing a community-driven theatre festival like this, and I genuinely enjoyed it.

There were so many talented actors, along with a great variety of scripts, characters, themes, and storytelling styles. Each performance brought something different, which made the whole event really interesting and engaging.

What impressed me most was seeing how strong the local arts and theatre community is. There was a real sense of creativity, passion, and community behind the performances. It was great to see local talent being given a platform to perform and bring different stories to life.

Geelong really does have a wonderful community for theatre, drama, and the arts, and I’m glad I got the chance to experience a part of it. Definitely something I’d love to attend again.

Stop Saying “Very” — 30 Stronger Words to Improve Your Writing

I’ve been trying to improve both my vocabulary and spelling lately, and one thing I noticed is how often I use “very + adjective” when there’s already a stronger word for it.

A few examples:

  • very old → ancient
  • very surprising → astonishing
  • very hot → boiling
  • very good → brilliant
  • very tasty → delicious
  • very happy → delighted
  • very bad → awful / dreadful
  • very big → enormous
  • very important → essential
  • very tired → exhausted
  • very interesting → fascinating
  • very dirty → filthy
  • very cold → freezing
  • very angry → furious
  • very beautiful → gorgeous / stunning
  • very funny → hilarious
  • very clean → immaculate
  • very unhappy → miserable
  • very small → tiny / minute
  • very impressive → spectacular
  • very hungry → starving
  • very scared → terrified
  • very great → tremendous
  • very difficult to tolerate → unbearable
  • very important/immediate → urgent
  • very good → wonderful

The full list I’m practising:

ancient, astonishing, awful, boiling, brilliant, crowded, delicious, delighted, dreadful, enormous, essential, exhausted, fascinating, filthy, freezing, furious, gorgeous, hilarious, immaculate, miserable, minute, spectacular, starving, stunning, terrified, tiny, tremendous, unbearable, urgent, wonderful

One thing that has helped me with spelling is not just reading the words.

I listen to the word, try to type it without seeing it, check the answer, and then repeat the words I got wrong. I’ve found that this makes the mistakes much easier to notice than simply reading a vocabulary list.

Another thing I’m trying is keeping a small list of words I repeatedly misspell and practising only those instead of starting from scratch every day.

I built a small free dictation/spelling tool for myself to do this. I’m not adding the link directly because I don’t want this to become a promotional post, but if anyone genuinely wants to practise this list, let me know and I can share it in the comments.

Also interested to hear what works for everyone else. What’s your best method for remembering the spelling of difficult words?

30 Commonly Misspelled Words — I Only Got 85% Right

I’ve been practising some commonly misspelled English words and got about 85% correct in my last dictation practice.

Here are 30 words I keep seeing people (including myself) get wrong:

  • accommodate
  • achievement
  • acknowledge
  • apparent
  • argument
  • beginning
  • calendar
  • colleague
  • committed
  • conscience
  • definitely
  • discipline
  • embarrass
  • environment
  • existence
  • foreign
  • government
  • grammar
  • guarantee
  • independent
  • knowledge
  • maintenance
  • millennium
  • necessary
  • occasion
  • occurrence
  • parallel
  • questionnaire
  • receive
  • recommend

I’ve practised these a few times and still haven’t managed to get all 30 correct in a single attempt 😅

I’ve been using a small spelling/dictation tool I built for myself to practise them. I’m not adding the link here because I don’t want this post to come across as self-promotion.

If anyone wants to try the same list, I’m happy to share it in the comments if the subreddit rules allow it.

How many of these do you think you could spell correctly without checking?

How I improved my spelling for PTE academic in 30 days

I used to lose marks on PTE just because of silly spelling mistakes. I knew the words, could say them out loud without thinking, but the moment I had to type under time pressure, my fingers would just type it wrong. “Recieve” instead of “receive”, “seperate” instead of “separate” — the classics, but somehow I never caught them in the moment.

I realized the problem wasn’t that I didn’t know the words, it’s that my hands were trained on wrong patterns from years of texting and autocorrect doing the thinking for me. My brain knew the spelling, my hands didn’t.

Since nothing out there fit exactly what I needed (PTE/IELTS specific words, instant feedback, no sign up), I actually ended up building my own tool for it, now live at dictationpractise.com Full disclosure, I’m the creator, so take that with a grain of salt. But my spelling mistakes on mocks genuinely dropped a lot after this.

Are there any similar free tools that anyone know of to practice spelling

Edit - thank you for pointing out that the correct use of word is spelling not spellings. Unfortunately I cant edit the headline now.

Built a tool to improve English Spellings

While preparing for the PTE English exam, I struggled to find a simple tool that lets me practice a custom set of words—especially to improve my spelling. Most resources were either too generic or didn’t support focused repetition.

So I built a simple tool for myself

It helped me a lot by allowing me to repeatedly practice the words I personally found difficult. Even after the exam, I still use it to keep my spelling and vocabulary sharp. One of my biggest pain points was making spelling mistakes during screen sharing—it always felt a bit embarrassing, like I was exposing something basic I should already know. This tool helped me fix that.
At the end of each day, I review the words I got wrong and run through them again, which has made a noticeable difference over time.
If you’re working on your English spelling or preparing for exams like PTE, this might be useful to you. And if you know someone who could benefit from it, feel free to pass it along.

My story for Overall 90 as some one struggled with spellings heavily

https://preview.redd.it/3mkcfrtcr69h1.png?width=1044&format=png&auto=webp&s=faf26eec3aaecc7a12eca4765c9a748ceb8eeeb4

Hi everyone,

I recently took the PTE and managed to get a 90 overall by a thread.
Here is how I managed to tuckle the exam.

When I first checked the PTE requirements, I was a bit confused. To get Superior English, you need 88 out of 90. I knew people had achieved it before, but it still seemed like a very high score.

I work full-time, so I didn't have endless hours to study. I had to be careful about where I spent my time. Most of my preparation was focused on speaking because I felt that was one of the areas where I could improve the most. I used apeuni.com quite a bit for speaking practice and getting used to the different question types.

One thing I didn't pay much attention to at first was spelling.

Wring Marks Trick

Throughout my life, I've relied heavily on autocorrect, I think it would be same for most of you here. Because of that, I never really developed the habit of paying attention to spellings. Even now, I come across words almost every day that I realize I've been spelling incorrectly.

And one thing I noticed was you can push your scores for writing section if you had no spelling mistakes in any word you type in the exam. Typing is a bit different than writing since its bit unconscious some words were imprinted to misspell with speed.

Since I was working full-time, I didn't have time to sit down and memorize large vocabulary lists. Instead, I started keeping track of the words I actually misspelled during the day. After work, I would add those words to DictationPractise.com and spend a few minutes practising them until I could type them correctly without thinking too much about it.

It wasn't a complicated study method. I just focused on the mistakes I was already making. Over time, I noticed that many of the words that used to trip me up became automatic.

I still spent most of my study time on speaking, but fixing my spelling weaknesses helped more than I expected. If you're preparing for PTE while working full-time, it might be worth paying attention to the small mistakes you make regularly if you want to increase the writing marks. Its easier than planning to get full marks for grammar.

Disclaimer - dictationpractise.com is a product I built myself to improve my spellings during my PTE exam preparation, And It has a very useful free tier if you want to try

31 M in Geelong — Looking to rebuild, find my people, and start fresh (board games, sci-fi, low-energy connections)

Hey everyone,

Not sure if this is an appropriate post for this group but going for it anyways.

I’m a 31-year-old guy living in the Geelong area, and to be completely blunt, the last month or two of my life has been an absolute emotional meat grinder.

I’ve recently gone through a massive family breakdown/separation, lost my previous social network, and am currently navigating a lot of quiet, heavy grief. I am working hard on myself with professional supports, but going home to a quiet house on weekends is getting tough, and I am ready to start rebuilding.

I am an introverted, analytical gamer/geek. I absolutely love deep strategy board games, tabletop terrain, sci-fi, and immersive storytelling/mysteries.

Because I’m an introvert and my confidence has taken a bit of a beating lately, I am terrible at "putting myself out there" in loud, club-style environments, and the mainstream dating apps are pretty soul-crushing. I do much better when I’m placed in a structured, low-stakes bonding situation over time where connections can just form naturally in the background.

What I am looking for:

New friends/Social groups: People who love board games, D&D, or video games and wouldn't mind an extra player for a campaign, a small kitchen-table game night, or a casual coffee. (I know about the Belmont library night, but would love to find a smaller, consistent crew).

People going through similar hard times: If you are also in your 30s, navigating a heavy life reset, separation, or isolation in Geelong, I’d love to connect. It would be great to grab a quiet drink or snack with people who speak that same language and understand the weight of it.

Dating potential: I’m not looking to rush into anything heavy, but I’d ultimately love to meet an empathetic, caring, introverted woman who loves geek/alternative culture and is down to build a genuine connection from a place of total honesty and mutual safety.

If you’re a local gamer, a fellow introvert, or just someone looking to expand their circle with someone who values absolute accountability, reliability, and safe spaces, please feel free to drop a comment or send me a DM. I’m happy to chat here or exchange Discord handles.

Thanks for reading.

Looking for Badminton Coaching / Playing Partners

Hey everyone,

I’m based in Highton and looking for someone interested in playing badminton a few days a week either casual games or some basic coaching/practice sessions.

You definitely don’t need to be a professional coach. Even if you’re just someone who enjoys playing regularly and wants a consistent partner, I’d be keen.

At the moment, I usually play socially at Badminton Geelong as a casual player. If you’re already part of a club or regular group around Geelong, feel free to suggest it as well.

Mainly looking to improve my game, stay consistent, and play more often.

Feel free to message me or comment below if interested 🏸

Go to place for ironing clothes?

Hi, I have never used a laundry service before, so would like some advice. I am looking for a place to specifically iron my clothes. Daily wear and office wear. I am fine if they do both washing and ironing. What would be my go to place. All the laundry places on google are with those coin machines , no mention about ironing, pressing service that I am looking for. Any place in geelong that do ironing clothes and what would be the price I have around 20 shirts . Thank you ☺️
