Hey boomers

Remember when you were hitchhiking across the country?
Remember riding motorcycles without a helmet?
Remember driving drunk/high?
Remember the mischief you got into as kids?
The fireworks? The drugs? The drinking wherever you wanted?
Remember the freedom to do as you wanted?
Some of you rode motorcycles in the mountains you now hold so sacred that one disturbed piece of soil will poison the reservoir or cause a flood.

Maybe it’s time to calm down.

Maybe it’s time to let the youth be youth.

Maybe you can allow others to be free to make mistakes and not have legal repercussions.

Maybe you should just enjoy the day and not worry about what others are doing.

Maybe you aren’t a victim.

What would your 20 year old self think?

Decomposed granite issue

Trail building question

I am the trails Director for our local IMBA chapter and i’m working on a plan to amend our natural soil on our only kids friendly beginner trail to improve traction in the summer. Our problem is our trails are all decomposed granite, and become incredibly hard packed and slippery when they dry out. I have a four year-old who likes riding anywhere except our local trails in the summer. (Winter we have great traction)

Does anyone have any experience amending decomposed granite soil for summertime traction? I have been thinking 10% Clay and 10% organic soil matter tilled into the trail bed might work. If anyone has any practical experience or suggestions, I would be extremely grateful.

*Not hating on E-bikes*

I live in an area that once had a robust mountain biking community, and then e-bikes came along. Flash forward five years or so and half the time I go for a ride I don’t see another soul.

My hypothesis:
Part of what keeps mountain bikers addicted, and riding consistently is the fact that cycling fitness goes away so quickly. If you don’t ride at least a few days a week and keep up your conditioning, mountain biking becomes not very enjoyable. E bikes uncouple the fun of mtb from cycling fitness. This is NOT to say you can’t have fitness on an e bike but you don’t need it. This breaks the motivation of maintaining fitness, and makes it just an activity to be done when you feel like it.

Observations:
Many consistent riders that have switched to e bike in my area seem to have started riding less and in quite a few cases started running for fitness. Also, at least five guys I know probably ride their E bike once a week or once every other week and now predominantly ride Moto.

Discussion:
Are you seeing the same thing in your area? Has this happened to you? Do you think my take on this accurate?

  1. Not here to discuss whether E bikes are good or bad.
  2. Not here to discuss whether or not you can have fitness on an E bike.

Hey Medford “Don’t tread on me” boys. Why do you put up with Medford speed cameras and Flock cameras surveilling you?

The bata libs you own in Ashland manage to resist both of these intrusions! What’s the deal???

Lineman pliers: do you carry them?

I remember being a first year apprentice and being so excited to get my first pair of lineman pliers, but after a year or so I realized I rarely ever use them and they’re the heaviest thing sitting in my bags and weighing on my hips. Literally use them as a hammer more than anything else. Haven’t carried a pair in my tool bags for 10 years. (The tool bags I wear. I do keep a set in my tote) I did see some value in the ones that had an integrated fish tape puller. Do you use them? If so, for what? If so, what kind of work do you do?

Highway patrol is such a joke

Freeway speed limits are generally too low. Everyone drives well over the posted speed limit and the unspoken rule is the highway patrol will pull you over for 11 mph over. Why not raise the speed limits? It’s far more convenient for everyone to be braking the law all times so there’s always a pre context to pull you over and harass or search. Ask any officer and they will tell you they are just keeping us all safe, yet they will aggressively pull into freeway traffic causing people to slam on their brakes and then pull your family over on the side of a busy highway to have a super safe chat. To illustrate my point, if you parked on the side of the freeway and just hung out, one of America’s finest would show up and tell you how dangerous that is.

Solution: Raise all speed limits at least 15mph and ticket 1mph over. All traffic stops should be conducted off an exit.

But it’s not really about safety….

And for god sakes, pull over these fucking truck drivers driving in the left lane!

Sincerely, a guy on a road trip.
