Did saving aggressively in your 20s feel worth it later?

Looking back, I think it's hard to know where the right balance was when you're actually in your 20s. Putting a big chunk of your salary into investments can feel great when you watch the portfolio grow, but at the same time, there are experiences and opportunities that don't necessarily come back later. I'm interested in hearing from people who are now in their 30s, 40s or beyond. Did the money you saved early on make a noticeable difference to your life and give you more freedom later? Or are there things you skipped back then that you now wish you'd spent the money on?

What did you do the first time you got sick while living away from home?

Getting sick is never fun, but it feels a little different when you're living away from home and suddenly have to figure everything out yourself. No one to bring you food, remind you to take medicine, or help you decide whether you actually need to see a doctor.

For those who have been through it, what did you do the first time you got properly sick while living on your own? Did you manage everything yourself, did your roommates or friends help out, or did you end up calling home for advice?

Golden hour on the Spaarne. Boats drift by, people slow down, and Haarlem quietly changes its pace as the evening light reaches the water.

Where do you take visitors when they come to Haarlem?

If friends or family are visiting Haarlem for the first time, where do you usually take them?

It could be a well-known attraction, a favourite café or restaurant, a nice walk, or a quieter spot that most tourists might miss. What's the one place or experience you think gives visitors the best feel for Haarlem?

What do Dutch people complain about more than they probably should?

I've noticed that people everywhere tend to complain about things that, in the grand scheme of things, aren't actually that bad.

In the Netherlands, what do you think falls into that category? Is there something people often criticise that you actually think works quite well or is better than people give it credit for?

What comes to mind first?

What's your favourite market in or around Haarlem?

Haarlem and the surrounding area have plenty of markets, each with its own atmosphere. Some are great for fresh produce, others for flowers, antiques, vintage finds, clothing, or simply wandering around with a coffee.

Which market do you find yourself returning to, and what makes it stand out? Is there a particular stall or something you always make sure to buy when you're there?

If you could bring back one old shop, café, or venue in Haarlem, what would it be?

Some places disappear, but people still talk about them years later.

Whether it was a café, restaurant, pub, music venue, shop, or something else, which place do you wish was still around?

What made it so special, and do you think anything has managed to replace it?
