Won both European Wars as Medvedev, beat the EU and for some reason all the land went to 1 German puppet. Same happens when I beat the Balkans, Greece just gets it all. How do I stop this and get nice borders?

I usually use pre-existing templates, but I need a template for Russia, but there is no good template for the world map that adds them (I want to add TNO borders to Russia)
Any advice on how to create borders?

I am playing as Anlgican britian, and I want to upgrade the tower of London, but I don't know if I will get bonuses from it due to the strange requirments underneath (Which should already be complete). Are those requirements relivant for me?

So, Bitt3rSteel interviewed two HOI4 devs, so I wanted to share my thoughts on what the devs said.

 

One things the devs said is that they play a mandatory 2 hours of Multiplayer per week, which feels like it explains some of the problems with why it feels like the devs don’t play the game. You have such different priorities and playstiles for MP, but most people don’t play it much. I have 3,281 hours and never play Multiplayer, and I don’t think that that is all that uncommon (Realise I used allot of that’s in that sentence).

Of the two devs interviewed one said he doesn’t play HOI4 because he can’t look at it as a player anymore, and the other, who was being talked about by both devs asif he played the game a tone said that in both his work and personal account he had only around 1,200 hours in the game.

They also did say that game designers had to play each new path, but they had the option in each path to play singleplayer or multiplayer, which feels like a problem as, once again, Multiplayer plays very differently to single player, they often act as basically different games.

The dev was saying about how allot of unbalanced things like advisors or national spirits are due to a designer not really understanding the implications of 20% soft attack or something, which I understand, I mean I can’t really describe the difference a specific number of soft attack makes is, but surely you eliminate that by using the buffs? Like I don’t know what 20% soft attack does precisely, but I know why soft attack is powerful, and if you test out having that buff, not even in a full game, you could even just give yourself it for 5 minutes of battles to see oh, 20% soft attack is very powerful. It also does not explain why these modifiers often stack to insane amounts. I know Siam got supper cheap tanks, so did no one at paradox add up the modifiers to see how insane the reduction in construction cost could be? Just get a spreadsheet and see how much production cost a nation can get overall is.

They harp on for a bit about how they often don’t play the game in a way where you comprehend what 20% soft attack is, which I understand, but surely play testing would reveal it to be unbalanced preventing it from making it into DLC’s?

They apparently are trying to combat this by playing more competitive multiplayer? Why? They said that they started doing that recently, but why more multiplayer? Do they not see the stats on what gamemode’s people are playing? Hoi4 players mostly play single player, and adding more multiplayer for the devs doesn’t really help balance single player then.        

Infact, even spectating the game reveals massive problems with it. Has the Franco-Thai war ever gone historicaly for anyone? Every game I play Siam initially takes most of Indochina, but then Vichy troops push them back to pre-war borders. Japan then gets the land, China and Guangxi push in, and Siam declares war, then peaces out, with them. No one has to control any nation to reveal that, or how Britian often leaves no navy in the med and naval invades and Mandatory Palistine and the Emirate of Transjordan capitulate.

 

Eitherway, their approach is clearly not working, each DLC keeps having insane unbalanced things, which are either stupidly powerful, or require the player to be insanely good at the game to do. If they play test the game, then they clearly need to do it differently, or more often, as unbalanced things keep making it in.

 

They do mention an actual problem Paradox has that I really agree with, and that is that the HOI4 community does very different things and fits into different groups.

They mention the people who mostly play:

1. Multiplayer

2. Larp games

3) Exploiting stuff

4) Alt-History

And they are correct when they say you can’t listen too all these people, but going back to my earlier point, why do you not require devs to play not Multiplayer regualery aswell? Only one category of HOI4 players they mention plays mostly MP.

But, for the most part, I agree with what the devs had to say on this, and you notice that with most DLCs. I liked that Siam in Thunder at Our Gates being set up as a regional powerhouse who could fight limited wars, but not all players liked that DLC, despite I think it being the best DLC since Götterdämmerung.

 

OH MY GOD ONE OF THE DEVS MENTIONED THAT THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR HAS WEAK FOCUSES AND THEY SHOULD BE SHORTER, YES, YES, YES PLEASE!!!

He said he played it and realised it was unbalanced, and allot of 70 day focuses gave weak rewards, but that DLC has been out for 5 or 6 years by now, and he said it asif that was the first time he played the Spanish Civil war. I bought this game allot more recently, and have probably played the Spanish Civil war atleast 15 times. 

Sorry, that really exited me as I like the Spanish Civil war in HOI4, but wish the focuses did more, and were shorter/more impactful.

 

The next point mentioned is why older focus trees are not updated, and I mostly agree with the devs on this, but there is one thing I want to mention. They basically mention the tricle on effects of changing a single focus, and how allot of old focus trees are built differently, like how Spain has no economy, political, army, navy and airforce tree, instead they are combined into each factions overall tree, with some crossover between them

They keep talking about how small the team is, but why? Paradox isn’t some small failing studio run by three devs and their pet dog in their mother’s garage on a 2008 Macbook air. They are a big company. Why not upsize the dev team a litte so you can do more.

 

The games are balanced based on having all the DLCs. The devs said this, and for the most part I’m fine with that, though I do think that they should start to integrate older features that you can currently only get through DLC, such as spys, into the base game, as that would give you less potential unbalancings for non-DLC players.

They mention tanks in accordance to this, and how they have to update things like icons for both non-NSB players and NSB players, but why not bring tank designers into the base game? They are great, and the Soviet tree can sell NSB without it, so why not make it base game. That way you don’t have to update tanks for both players with and without it.

One dev said they needed a week to fix this, but only got two days, which seems like a massive problem, and also really inefficient. In the grand scheme of things, a week isn’t that much work, particularly because of all the time it saves down the road. The other dev said that patches are mostly devs with a few free hours of work choosing to work on them whilst they pump out DLC.

Why not make patch development more organised then? Why not dedicate time and resources to fixing the game?

 

They then talk about balancing HOI4 between fun and realistic history, but honestly there is very little I can add to this.

Tldr:

1. The devs play too much multiplayer and not enough single-player (Me) (Devs – play 2 hours of Multiplayer a week, but are only required to play singleplayer when new trees are added)

2. HOI4 is split into different groups (Devs)

3. They said spain might get balanced soon

4. Updating one focus has tricle down effects(Devs), but (Me) Paradox only fixes these problems in spare time

5) Game balance is based on having all dlc (Devs), but (Acording to me) some DLC features like Tank designers should be added to the base game so as to streamline the produciont process, and as NSB will sell anyway due to the USSR tree

6) Peacedeals are being looked into

Anyway, sorry if my TLDR is useless, it is quite hard to write my thoughts and what the devs said clearly into it.

Overall, I do wish that Bitt3rSteel asked a few more follow up questions on the dev’s points, but overall it did increase my understanding about how PDX work

A few patches ago, Paradox noticed that players were easily beating the US. So, they added this stupid natoinal spirit.
Whenever the US looses a core state they now gain 20% attack and defence on core territory.
WHY. That is stupidly unbalanced. Now some people might say that it represents the US pasionatly resisting incursions into their homeland, but is that not what the attack and defence modifiers on war support do?
Their war support gives them 10% attack and defence already, representing this.
The thing about this spirit is, it is just not fun.
I wish that the US was harder to beat, so it felt like I was fighting an actual campaign to subdue them, not roll them over quickly like I do whenever I play a major.
Firstly, for minors, this makes the US next to unbeatable. Here is a challange for you. Play Mexico's focus tree whilst the US has this natoinal spirit. They are next to imposible to beat.
Then as a major, this does not make them more dificult in a fun way, just in an annoying way.
It just means you need more brute force per division, rather than having to make strategic decisions and things. The raw 20% just makes the US a slog to fight, and when my whole campaign is me watching 4 divisions attacking a single division from 3 tiles for several months, despite each of my divisoins having more soft attack (Which is what is happening to me) is not fun, just anoying

So, for anyone who doesnt want to read the whole thing, Paradox made the US get 20% attack and defence on core teritory once a state is occupied (This goes allongsied the 10% from war support). For minors this makes them increadably hard to beat, and for majors it is still easy, it just becomes a boring slog which lasts for too long

I was playing as Uzbek, and all my oponents had massive armies and allies. So, to fight Muskovy I created a massive merc army and annexed Moscow. Then, feeling far to confident, I marched east and fought Oirat. I won again. But it was an increadably slow war.
I ended it with over 20 loans, a massive defecit, and even having raised provinces, exploited tax dev and reduced spending on everything and paying off half those loans, I cannot stop loosing money

How do I stop loosing money, or should I just declare bancrupcy

I just picked up the game again after a few months of not playing it, and started as Uzbek. Long story short, the tribes have no loyalty and 100% influence (This is causing a disaster to tick). There are allot of other problems with my nation , like how the price of accepting feudalism keeps ticking up without me expanding, but this is my biggest problem
