Stocking ideas

Walked into my local Maidenhead aquatics today for some fertiliser and walked out with one of their display tanks ( the 60 cm listed above ). Cost me next to nothing and I’m looking for some fun stocking ideas. I’m open to pretty much anything give me some suggestions please…

I know it’s only 33 litres ( I know it says 36 on the website but the sticker on the back says 33 ) so we are talking some nanos or small species. Not a betta please as I already have one. I’m open to one fish species and some shrimp, it’s going to go in my wife’s office. Would consider temperate fish as well, the office is underground so it’s a reasonably stable temperature year round.

Any fish that wouldn’t work in a 50 litre Walstad?

Hi, I’m considering my first walstad style tank … probably somewhere between 40 and 60 litres.

I’m not new to the hobby I have 5 tanks already but they are all more aquascape style.

Any fish species ( that would fit in a tank that size ) that you wouldn’t recommend or would be an absolute no no and the reasons why ? ( that’s fish that wouldn’t work in the walstad method not fish that just wouldn’t fit in the tank size )

Thanks… I have a space for another tank and am trying to decide if to try something new…

Best place in uk to get neos

About to start Neo tank number two and looking for a good place to get the shrimp from once it’s done. My first shrimp came from Maidenhead aquatics ( if your in the uk you’ll know them most likely ) but they are expensive and their range isn’t great ( though I’ve never had any issues with any livestock I’ve brought from them ) … recommendations please for trusted sources 🙏

Ideas to brace shelves for a nano tank…

Looking to replace the small fry tank with a 25 litre nano once the Cory in there are big enough not to get eaten. Any ideas on how best to brace the shelves ( the unit is rated to 90 kg but doesn’t give a per shelf weight )

Question for a friend as my genetics is very rusty

Hi, a good friend of ours was told the other day when going to give blood in the uk that she couldn’t possibly have two white British parents due to her blood type. This has thrown her into quite a bit of distress as her parents both are white British to her knowledge.
Though I did some genetics at uni it was almost 30 years ago, but I thought it wasn’t possible to determine parental lineage from blood type alone.
Anyone able to suggest if this is the case and if it isn’t what she might have been told from info that they’d have had at a blood test that may have caused her to get the wrong end of the stick.
Sorry if not allowed on here but trying to help out a friend who’s been through quite a bit recently and probably doesn’t need to go through something like this unnecessarily. Thanks

Smallest size tank it’s fair to have fish in…

Morning … sounds like a simple question but probably contentious. My office is turning into abit of a fish room but I’m slightly limited in space due to my desk and keeping tanks away from the radiator.

What is the smallest tank that it’s fair to keep nano fish in ( not betta’s or shrimp I have these already, though probably will get more shrimp anyway).

Little one in the dish male?

I’m assuming the bigger, chunky ones are female, is the smaller one in the dish likely to be male? Sorry about the picture quality.

How quick do baby peppered grow.

I have 2 x 2/3 ish week old peppered fry in a fry tank, they are probably 6mm ish long and seem to be doing ok.

I’m interested to know are they doing ok size wise, how fast do they grow and at what point am I out of the danger zone in terms of mortality?

caridina might be the next project…

Hi, I’m considering looking into trying out some caradina as my next aquatic project.

I have a number of tanks at home and we keep fish and cherrys.

How much harder is it to keep caradina than other aquatic life for a reasonably capable fish keeper ?

Had a few tiny ammonia spikes in new tank with old filters.

Over the last two weeks I have had two small ammonia spikes in our month old 60 litres. It has two filters in it currently a 50 litre rated sponge and also a 90 litre rated internal filter… the sponge had been running in another tank for 3 months and the internal is full of media from an established tank. Before putting in live stock the filters were in the new tank for a week and I tested twice with 2 ppm dr Tim’s and it processed both times under 24 hours. Stocking atm is one female gbr ( tank was setup due to aggression issues we were having with her shes about 4 cm) , 8 Gertrude’s rainbow fish and 4 rams horns.

I have been testing every other day and everything has been mostly great no ammonia or nitrite and 10-20 ppm nitrate. Tank is heavily planted with floaters and has 4 peace lily’s in it aswell. Substrate is aquatic compost, pea gravel mix with a small amount of tropica aqua soil I had lying around, capped with an 3 cm of sand.

However twice, once last week and once today I’ve tested and there has been 0.25 or slightly higher ammonia. I have fixed both times with a 10 litre water change and retested and results have been zero ammonia. All tests done with api master test kit.

Any idea what it could be, filters should be able to cope with the stock level, I don’t think we are over feeding but they are all eating pellet so it’s possible but again I wouldn’t have thought enough to overwhelm the filters. Maybe the aquasoil? But again there was not a huge amount in there and it’s capped?

Unexpected babies…

Just over two weeks ago I managed to get 4 peppered Cory eggs out of my community tank and into a small tank I setup. 6 days later nothing had happened and i guessed it hadn’t worked - then we had the heatwave in the uk.

I came back to the tank today and was going to do a water change and tidy up, hoping that next time it would go better…

And I find 2 3mm Cory fry swimming around…

I have powered down a very small amount of food for them… what else do I need to do to maximise their chances. Once they get to a size I can net if they survive I’ll probably pop them in with my shrimp tank as there’s a ton of microscopic life in there for them to eat…

Was a bit of a surprise tbh…

Finally after 2 months there are shrimp in the tank..,

Well since I set it up it’s had angry gourami waiting to be re-homed and a fin biting German blue ram while her new tank was setup but finally there are shrimp in there ( much to my betta next doors interest )…

Starting small as I’m not sure what the weather is going to be like in the uk next week is going to be like and I’ve not tried to keep this tank cool ( I’m going to add an air stone off the air pump then I get a value)…

But there are shrimp !!

Feeding as soon as they went in an no hiding..

Blue ram glass surfing, is it possible that dispite the internet being doom and gloom she’s ok.

Hi, we have moved one if our German blues into a new tank as she wasnt getting on with another ram. She has been in my quarantine tank for a couple of weeks and then last Friday she went into her new tank. Water is fine, tank has two established filters in it and probably over filtered by 2 times ( same as all my tanks ).

Tank was tested twice with 2ppm ammonia and it was nitrate within 24 hours and I’ve tested ever day since she’s been in there. Today’s test 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 10ppm nitrate. Temp 27 degrees, Ph is 7.5 ( I know higher than recommended but she is locally bred and she’s always been in local tap water ) we have had her about 3-4 months. She has been glass surfing today both on the front and back of tank.

Other than that she’s been eating fine ( probably more than she’s ever done since we’ve had her ) has been taking a lot of interest in the sponge filter I have in the tank as a backup and playing’ with they bubbles.

Colours look good, probably the best she’s ever looked, and no stress stripes. She is currently on her own in the tank, I was going to get her some dither fish but it’s been to hot in the uk to transport any so waiting for the weekend. Tank is 60l ish, planted with wood and hiding spaces but she doesn’t seem shy and she wasn’t in the last tank, always coming out to see ppl.

The internet says glass surfing is stress, but I’m not seeing any other stress indicators. Or is it a wait and see?

Anyone got any ideas ?
